Parents of kids who have/had braces.....

Yes, I did, but thats cause I have a very small mouth. Apparently its not too common. However, my mother will tell you otherwise about my 'small mouth':rolleyes1

Oh and a fribble!!!! Its a thick milkshake from the Friendly's restaurant!!! I grew up on them, I forget people don't always know what they are! If you have a Friendly's near you, go get one! Man are they good. My ortho was right across the street from Friendly's. Trust me, just go get one!

My son also had an extraordinarily small mouth and an overbite. The pain from his bottom teeth hitting his palette became so serious they had to treat it sooner than they would have liked. They took out TEN TEETH, four of which were adults, and here we are 4+ years later still in braces, and easily for another year.

I tell my friends in a half joking manner, get a dental profile from anyone you plan to have children with.... My daughter inherited my mother in law's underbite, which turns out to be more serious than my sons issues if that's possible, and her teeth are straight, yet they want to put her in braces to keep her jaw in line, and this is after 3 years of headgear.....

My teeth are stinking perfect, so never any issues with me, it's DH's side of the family!!!

Sorry, my response doesn't have anything to do with teens getting braces. I just wanted to commiserate with Gypsydoodlebug! I got porcelain braces on top too and GOLD on the bottoms, at age 37 (I am now 39) and had the same issues. I was not eligible for Invisalign either and really didn't think my teeth were all that bad, but I wanted them straighter. 2 years later, and I just got my tops off this week and its like HEAVEN.

My DH had suggested I get gold on the bottoms, thought it would look nice. Well, I can't tell you how many times I have been asked by the WalMart cashiers if I have a "grill." Lovely. Good times. I also can't tell you how many people have flat out stared at me like I have 3 heads because I have braces on. I just don't get that. :confused3

OP - they'll tell you this but no popcorn, no hard chips, no sticky stuff. It has helped me keep weight off the past two years! Good luck to your DS.

I'm sitting here eating a big bowl of microwave popcorn! :rotfl:

I'm also managing editor of a national pizza magazine, so I eat a lot of 'za. I actually broke my first bracket at Pizza Planet @ DHS in 2006 (actually, I've broken MORE brackets in the two years that I've had these on than most 13-year-olds do. :scared1: My ortho hates me; but really, my teeth are really really small and I mostly chew on my brackets). I get by.

My ortho is also a periodontist, so he does ortho on T and TH and perio on MWF. Makes it more difficult, so I'd definitely ask about hours of operation and ease of emergency appts.

Came back to read what else had been written. Thanks again for all the great info!! And for the stories and experiences some of you have had.

DD is actually eager to get the whole process started. I admit I'm more nervous then she is. LOL

But thanks for the tips and hints everyone!! :)

My son will be getting his in a month when we get back from out trip. He was told a little over a year ago that he will not need braces..

He has grown so much and I mean soooooo much over the last year that I brought him back. He is 14 and is 6 feet tall. Well because of how much he grew ..teeth and jaw that he know needs them

Ahhh yes the sticker shock. Not sure how much they are where you live but here it is $4100 for 1 year :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: ...he only needs them for that amount of time. I did some checking around and they were comparable to everyone else. He needs them on the top and bottom to push the top ones back and the bottoms forward.

Glad I found this thread:thumbsup2
