I know this is a strange title but something I thought worth having a discussion about. I have been involved with adult athletes for about 40 years and during that time I've shared a lot of stories and heard a lot of stories in return. One of the interesting things discussed is fears that athletes have and how they have over come them.
I have always had a fear of being attacked by loose dogs. I have friends that have shared stories and showed scars where they were bitten. Usually the attacks occur in residential areas. Because of that I avoid residential areas and perfer to do my walking in parks, along the highways or at a school track. I used to do my running on base when I was in the Air Force usually following the perimiter of the flight line. When I'm on a long training walk I carry a clip on can of HALT, never had to use it but it's a comfort to have it there.
When I turned 50, I returned to exercise after laying off for 7 years. I was in terrible physical condition and had gained a lot of weight, I had also just quit smoking after having smoked since I was sixteen. I had a fear then of having a heart attack and falling down and dying while I was running, this was before I switched to race walking. I would always do my running on busy streets so if I had a heart attack there would be plenty of people around to call 911.
The most unusual fear that I heard anyone tell me was their fear of roadkill. They were afraid that the animal was just stunned and it would revive just as they were running by and bite them. Because of that they couldn't run on the road unless there was a wide shoulder or sidewalk.
Please feel free to share your own stories about yourself or about others you have run/walked with over the years.
