I don't like to think "DIET", I much prefer, "Life Style Change". There are a ton of DIET books and Diet plans, all claim to be the one the "Holy Grail" of weight loss. The very word starts out with DIE. The basic concept of dieting is to eat less than your body needs to survive so it will consume it's self. So since dieting is slow starvation then it's not something that can be continued for very long.

Instead of thinking Diet, think weight loss as part of your life style change, a change that you can continue. I'm going to present some of my ideas toward that new beginning and would love for others to share theirs.

A person who starts on the journey to become fit and healthier has an up hill battle, it's confusing to say the least. The American Heart Association, which as far as I'm concerned put out some of the best information, say that you should eat primarily complex carbs and smaller amounts of fat and protien.

A good place to start is to stop eating stuff that ain't food! Soft drinks are a chemical mix, who knows what illnesses can be directly related to them. We civilized people have more weird stuff that the "great unwashed" of the third world don't die of the way we do. Heart disease, colon cancer, heck we even invented a few new diseases that we die from.

The more we strive for health the more we think about buying the other chemical mixes that claim to be the best, weight loss formula, the best muscle builder, the best stuff for growing hair. The shelves of "Health" stores are loaded with totally unregulated products. many of which have been proven dangerous rather than healthy.

Yes eating good fresh veggies and good cuts of lean meat and fish are more expencive than processed food. But if you cut out the non food then you can replace that with real food.

Stop believing the advertising and start using common sense when you shop. Then use that common sense again when you cook. We cover our healthy food with high fat and chemical dressings and sauces. Isn't it great to order a salad because it's healthier and it's covered in Bacon, cheese, deep fried bread and Hidden Vally Ranch, Um Um Good.

Please continue this thread with your own ideas of good life style changes. We are after all inspired to stay healthy.

Great suggestions Dave. I try to live by all of these, when I can. The more natural the food, the better. I want to add that replacing our regular meat and milk with non steroid, non growth hormone meat and dairy is a great idea. If I wouldn't inject it into my body, I wouldn't eat something injected with it. :thumbsup2

Excellent advice Tandy. I eat the organic cage free eggs also.

I hate the word diet also. And I hate when restaurants give anything remotely healthy on their menu some ridiculous "diet" "weight management" or other name. I was at the Cheesecake Factory with friends who made fun of me all night for ordering something "Skinnylicious". I have been eating healthy long enough now that greasy food literally makes me sick, so yes, I would rather have a turkey and avocado sandwich than a greasy burger. But I don't think of myself as on a diet, because I always eat until I'm full.

Me to. I litterally can't stomach a regular soft drink. But up till my 20s I would drink several every day. Now I drink ice water with my meals in a restraunt even when soft drinks are free.
