Palo Brunch Dawes Glacier Day

For those who have been on Alaska cruise before… I’ve booked Palo brunch for Dawes Glacier day at 12:30pm. It was the only time available and I’ve read before that Dawes Glacier day is a good day for the brunch as you get a great view of the glacier from the restaurant, however will we miss too much going on up on deck?

Unless you want to be on deck the entire time you are in the fjord, I think 12:30 is a good time for brunch. You will be approaching the glacier at that time and then the ship will stay there for a while turning slowly so that everyone gets a good view. You would have time for your meal and outside viewing. The one drawback to viewing from Palo is that a public deck surrounds the restaurant so there will be people standing outside of the restaurant.

I think it’s a little late. We had a 10:30 brunch on glacier day last time and I thought it was perfect. We had brunch while we cruised up the fjord and then were on deck the whole time we were at the glacier. I was hoping to be able to do the same this cruise but we’ll have to check for availability onboard (in 15 days!!)

They absolutely do, I don’t think you’d be able to see much and 12:30 is prime glacier viewing time (from my recollection 8 years ago - ask me again in 3 weeks!!)

It is my recollection from 2018 that during the brunch hours, the front of the ship was facing the glacier and the aft (where Palo is) was facing away, so no one was standing back there. I went back and looked at my photos and found this, which was taken around noon. We were back there briefly, but you can see in the background that there were not large crowds. I'm not saying this is always the case but it was our experience.

it's been almost 8 years since our last Alaskan cruise. I can try to remember to post the BBQ hours when we return on May 23rd

We did an Alaska cruise in 2014 when they did the cook out. They stopped doing the cook out a few yrs after that. From reports on here, when they did the big dry dock on the Wonder they redesigned the area where the cook out used to be held. It's now part of the concierge area. It was the same time they redid the Oceaneer's Club and changed the one restaurant to Tiana's Place. I haven't seen anyone mention if they do a similar lunch now in Cabanas.

They stopped doing the cook out about 5 yrs ago. They always have soup in Cabanas, don't know if they'll have the bread bowls.

Yes, they had already stopped doing the BBQ when we were there in 2018. I think the bread bowls had split pea soup but we didn’t try one.

I don't remember exactly when the big dry dock was done. We did our cruise in 2014 like you and then sometime after that they announced all the changes. I was bummed at the time because that was when they announced they were replacing the Toy Story show with Frozen. My dd was 6 yrs old at the time and loved Frozen. We cruised again on the Wonder in 2018 so we were able to see all the changes, not to Alaska though.

Keep your brunch. If you read through the thread, you'll see they stopped doing the outdoor lunch years ago.

If you have an opportunity to move to an earlier brunch time, I might try to do that. I think we were finished with our brunch by noon and that gave us the entire afternoon to spend with our kids on deck taking tons of character photos and enjoying the beautiful scenery. Also, during our morning brunch, we had an amazing, peaceful view sailing in and saw whales from Palo. Such a great memory! With that said, I think you will be fine if you stay with your current time slot.
