Palm Spring airport/rental cars?

Hi~

We'll be going on an exchange to Palm Desert in Feb. We'll be renting a car for our stay. Anyone have any car rental experience at this airport? I already checked, and for National it's "Emerald Counter" service, not Emerald Aisle. I'm also debating whether we should fly into Palm Springs or if there's a better alternative. I really don't want to fly into LAX and drive about 2 hrs. in CA traffic. Anybody have any suggestions?

DW and I have flown into the Palm Springs airport several times. We haven't rented a car there. Small but nice airport. Our aunt lives in Palm Desert and we got great air fare into Ontario once, but Palm Springs was so much closer than Ontario.
