What is the best brush (or other tool) to use to paint the spindles on my staircase railing? Anyone done this? I think a brush is going to be messy, but wonder what else I could use??

I did this a few months ago, it was very awkward because we left them in place. I ended up using a 1" foam brush and even a small art brush to get in the edges. I asked the guy at the paint store after the fact and he told me that it is worth the effort to take the rails apart and then just use a small brush. I have to agree with him. The best way would be to send them out to be sprayed, if that is an option.

UGH! I will look into the taking apart part. Not going to send them out. I HATE to do things like that when I know darn well it's a job I can by myself. I'm cheap that way I guess. I will have to discuss this with DH I guess!

Thanks for the tips....might go with the foam brush thing!

I painted the spindles on my front porch this summer and it was a pain, mostly because part of the porch is high off the ground. I used a regular brush, just a small one. My sister in law was convinced that they sell some type of brush thing that goes all around the spindle, but I looked in Walmart, Lowes and Home Depot and I've seen nothing like it.

I did it with a regular paintbrush. It wasn't difficult except for the high places on the other side. They look decent, but if it's easy to take them off, I'd do that.

using a sponge brush is easier than a typical brush.........buy several size widths....then toss them when done! Good Luck..

I had my done by a professional painter. He just used a brush and kept them in place. Looks great! With a little patience I'm sure anyone could do it.
