Painting furniture

Dh and I really want to get new bedroom furniture because we do not have a matching set, and they are completly different colors of wood. It is not at all in the budget right now to get new furniture, so we have thought about refinishing or painting what we have.

His furniture would be no problem to refinish, but mine has a laminate finish. Does anyone know how it would be to paint or refinish furniture that is laminate?

It is possible. First sand the surfaces. Wipe them off so there's no dust. You can either use a hi tack primer like Kilz or a primer/paint specially formulated for countertops.

Just a note - in the decorating magazines I read, "suites" of furniture are out of style, anyway, so yours are right IN style!

I repainted some laminate cabinets for toy storage earlier this year. I used a Zinsser bonding primer first. Followed instructions on Karla's cottage blog site. All I did was paint on the Zinsser bonding primer (has to say binding), I used the brush on because I don't have good luck with spraying. I let dry overnight & painted over with leftover wall paint we had. I used spray paint to modernize the hardware. They look decent & the price was right as they only cost me the binding primer everything else was re-used or found free at "the outdoor market"

If you are just wanting the wood colors to match, consider trying tinted polyurethane. This will only work if you want to go from light to dark.
When I moved, I had a large picture frame that didn't match my new dark cherry woodwork. I didn't want to buy another frame, as the first one was expensive, so I bought a darker shade of tinted polyurethane and put two coats on it. The first coat darkened it, but not enough, so I used the second coat. It worked great, and no one can tell it used to be a light oak color.
