As some of you know, I'm a student in the court reporting field.. and I'm hopefully going to be graduating some time this year. I've been in school since January 2009.

Over the last few weeks, I've been having a severe sharp pain in my right wrist. It starts right at the wrist, like where I'd wear a bracelet, and goes down to my middle knuckle. It's very sharp, and usually pretty quick.. it will last a few seconds and then go away.. and will come back every few hours for a few days, and the I won't have it again for about a week or so.

Anyone familiar with this? Could it just be strain on my wrists from school or is it worth looking further into?

Do you use a mouse or keyboard a lot?

I've had similar problems, so I bought an ergonomic mouse and try to do wrist and arm stretches

Correct this problem now. Make sure you are using an ergomically correct workstation setup. Alignment of your hands, wrists, and arms are vitally important in the business. I'm a transcriptionist. I use a split keyboard on a fully adjustable keyboard tray with space for my ergonomic mouse and a fully adjustable chair. You may even be using your mouse too much and that may be causing the problem.

Get a wrist brace. Ice it. Move your mouse to the left. Sit with your right hand hanging down in a natural position.

Thanks for your advice everyone! I appreciate it very much!

As someone who recently went through the surgery, I can tell you that I put the surgery off for quite awhile by wearing those hand braces, I was even told to wear them at night. I bought a great one at Target made especially for women, and it still allows me to write and use a keyboard...it has a metal bar from the wrist to the middle of my palm. It is made by Futura and it's grey with a stretchy type thin fabric.
Try the different keyboards and mice also.
But in the long run if you need surgery down the road I can tell you that it wasn't that bad and my left hand is 100%....I have to have my right hand done this year. Good luck.

My suggestion is to see a dr. I was having similar pain and went to physical therapy for it, I still have occasional pains but not as bad as they were previously. The PT really seemed to help a lot. :) Good luck, I hope you don't need the surgery.
