Pain in the mouth- Dental Crowns- pain?

I am getting 4 crowns tomorrow and I wanted to know what to expect as far as pain goes? I will only have the temps for 2 weeks but I swear my dentist doesn't want to scare me so he just tells me that I will have mild to moderate sensitivity. I would like to hear from anyone who has had it done and what to expect. The hard part will be eating because the 4 teeth getting the crowns are my 4 front teeth. Talk about an extreme diet! Anyway, if anyone can help me out with advice I would really appreciate it, because I am starting to get a little nervous.

I only have 6 teeth left that are NOT crowned so I consider myself almost an expert! Honestly, I think you will experience more discomfort from having your mouth open so long for the prep; I know when I've had 4 done at once (on more than one occasion), that's my biggest issue afterwards.

I have very sensitive teeth but I have not found the sensitive to cold and hot all that bad with the temp crowns. Extreme cold bothers me a bit but I'd just plan on drinking with a straw. If you are a coffee drinker, I'd just let the coffee cool down a bit first. I'd stay away from anything that requires you to bite with your front teeth (sandwiches, burgers, etc) and instead eat food that is cut up and you can avoid using your front teeth at all.

I just went through this. I have 6 in the front (baseball bat knocked mine out 36 yrs. ago).

My experience was this was not as bad as you think it will be. Of course, I am a fan of nitrious oxide. I recommend it if you choose to even consider it.
Mine was a drawn out process of about 2 1/2-3 months, I guess. I had to also have 4 of the front teeth have root canals. Because of those, I didn't have sensitivity.

2 other teeth did not have root canals and there was a little sensitivity but not much. They have some swabs for that that really worked too. Ask about those.

I think your main concern will be keeping those temps clean all around them and esp. the gum and around the crown. Since you'll only have them 2 weeks, it will not be very hard. Just do not be afraid of them. My dentist gave me a take home care kit that included a rechargeable water pic. That really helped me.

At one point, I was in the dental chair for 7 hours one day! 7 hours! The good thing about it being your front teeth is that you do not have to open your mouth as wide so it doesn't bother your jaw near as much as a back tooth does.

Also be sure (while you have those temps on) that your bite is good, feels good and doesn't hit weird. That can hurt as much as anything. They'll probably work with you a lot to get the bite just right. It is a very important part of the success of this type procedure IMHO. Last time I had it done, it wasn't dealt with and I paid the price for that. This go around has been 100% better and I'm loving my front teeth for the first time in 36 years! I can finally smile and that is a very good thing!

When eating, do not bite into anything with your temps. Eating will not be as bad as you think. My temps, along with fixing the bite actually helped eating, talking etc. It has been great!

I agree with Pakey about the soreness from having your mouth open while the work is being done. It's a muscle soreness in the jaw rather than any actual sensitivity in the mouth. That probably won't last more than a day or so, and it's not really that bad(aspirin or tylenol might help).

The actual install on the crowns is not that big of a deal at all, except they may place the crown on the tooth, have you bite on it to see if it feels right, and try some different tweaks. That's the time consuming part, and why your jaw might become sore/tired from keeping it open.

Not sure what to advise about eating, but other than the first few hours after the crowns are applied, you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Thanks everyone. I stocked the house with jello and pudding, so I know I will have something after it's all done that won't require any real effort to chew. I guess my real concern stems from a nerve disorder I have called TN (not TMJ) and any sensitivity can trigger an issue. I never thought about the pain stemming from my jaw being open that long. They said it would be at least 2 hours of work, but Buckalew11 7 hours, yowza! Now I don't feel so bad about my little 2 hours. Thanks again everyone now I don't feel so freaked out.

I hear ya. I have tons of crowns and getting more by the year. As others have said the pain comes from having to open your mouth for so long. I also am one who hates impressions, makes me gag, but other people don't mind it. You will be fine, trust me if I can go through it ANYONE can. I am such a baby about stuff like this. As another poster said also, make sure the fit is good after. I had a problem with one of mine. The bite just wasn't right. I went back the next day and the dentist fixed it. It's getting so I hate to go to the dentist because he always finds yet another tooth that needs a crown!!

If you want something besides pudding, there's always soup, and maybe even something like mac & cheese or maybe some other pasta?

I'm getting four crowns though because one of my front teeth didn't need a root canal but to make my smile beautiful and match the other front tooth. I wasn't in no pain after if was over. In fact I was in the chair for 5 hours and after we left I headed straight to target (next door) for a starbucks (iced drink). That same night Dh and I went to the local steakhouse and I had steak! I just cut the steak in smaller pieces and put it in the back of my mouth to chew. No biggy really.

I actually had huge buck teeth that stuck out from the other teeth but not anymore. I'm going to have pretty straight teeth now and I'm going to be 35 this year.

I'll be 35 this year as well and I will finally be rid of the gap between my two front teeth. I know it will take some time to get used to but I can't wait. I swear I was born with bad teeth. This is the first step in a long history of dental work that is doing something other than a filling, cleaning or root canal. As my mom said this is the fun part of a make over!

I agree- No biggy. I don't think you are gong to need to be eating Jello and Pudding etc- I have about a half dozen or so crowns and after each one it was business as usual eating normal foods. Right now one of my crowns fell out while I was on vacation so I am chewing on the other side until they can pit it back in tomorrow so I don't break the remaining pieces of tooth that is there that they need to glue it on to.

I find crowns worse than root canals, but neither all that bad. A root canal is just a good excuse to relax for a while (even if you can't fully nap). Crowns, on the other hand, I have not had as much luck with and have had some pain from those.

I agree with what everyone else has said so far....the worst part is having your mouth open for so long. Several years ago I had to have a root canal, and the endodontist that I went to used a bite block for me. It's a small piece of rubber that is placed between your molars to prop open your mouth. That way you're not actively having to use your jaw muscles to hold open your mouth. I ask my dentist for one every time I have a filling, crown, etc. now. It makes the whole procedure so much easier.

And, I'm going in tomorrow myself to have a permanent crown placed.

Well I got my temp crowns on Tues and here we are Thurs and I have to go back in because one of them came off. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't a front tooth. Oh well. As for the pain, it's only in my gum's, other than that I have no sensitivity. I get my permanents on the 21st and for the first time ever I am excited about going to the dentist.Thanks everyone for all the information ahead of time, it made it much easier to get it done.

Sorry a temp. fell off. I was fortunate not to lose a temp this time (mine were front teeth also). See why I thought you would not want temps for 6 months?!

How do your temps look? Mine were beautiful. As pretty as the real mccoy. Everyone thought my temps were my permanents!

Oh, did they warn you about eating hot and cold things and the temps expanding and contracting? Weird, weird feeling!!

My temps are ok, they look just like my teeth did before any of the work started. They have a lab on site so they took a mold before hand and used a temp resin. I have been so lucky that hot and cold don't bother me, but 3 of those teeth had root canals. The only that is a little sensitive is the one that didn't. But nothing to bad.
