I wanted to say before we left...thank you to all of you. Just a few months ago I was new to this thread...new to the DIS and just wanted to make a few special things for my kids. Now I feel I gained new friends and a new love for sewing again. I will miss seeing all of the new outfits next week and know that when I get back there will be another thread ..but we will be having our trip of a lifetime! I wish I had had time to post all the outfits but I ran out of time! I will have tons of pics when we get back and can't wait to share!

1.)Thanks so much everybody for the birthday wishes for my baby boy. He is actually feeling pretty crummy today. He's got a cough, diarrhea, and a little bit of a fever. I showed him all the smileys for him and he loved it!


2.)I've only been sniffly today, then I saw your post and you actually brought tears to my eyes. That is one of my all-time favorite pictures, of Corey holding Sawyer.

Have you ever tried using a rotary cutter? I find it a lot easier than scissors. Not so much cramping!

The husband DID get off work early and actually offered to take his dad to respite! And drop off the dog!

The bags are all packed sitting in the garage waiting for him to come home so we throw them in and take off!

wore the shirt to take the kids to school it was funny to me that I got a lot of compliments ( I am mostly in tshirts and sweat pants maybe that is why ) because is very easy and cheap to make (1 yard - paid 2.00 )

You are so cute in your outfit and so is your son.
As for the scissors issue I use Fiscars scissors and I don't have any problems. For straight edges I use a rotary cutter (it's a Fiscars too). Both were gifts so I use them all the time and don't have any trouble using them.

Went to the doctor today and I am very dissapointed, there is very little action going on down there! I was dilated to 1 cm (who cares, that is barely anything!) and 25% effaced. With my second (Claire) at this point I was already 4 cm and 100% effaced (of course I still had to be induced at 39 weeks) so I was a little surprised. Hopefully next week I'll have made more progress!

you look great! I have the best pair of scissors. Years ago my little sister bought herself and my mom some scissors. I don't think they were very expensive. When mom died 3 years ago dsis said since she already had a pair I could take them They are still the best scissors!

I am working on my Big Give Project and I need some help.

I am trying to use my Singer Futura to embroider a Mickey head onto the fabric.

But the machine is pulling the bobbin thread up through the fabric. I don't want the white thread to show. I am using Sulkey 100% polyester Bobbin Thread.

I am using Black Guterman Rayon thread as the top thread. I also have some Guterman Black 100% polyester thread.

Uggh. I just want this to look nice! Should I use the Black Polyester thread in the bobbin?

Very cute shirt!! You look great in it! You son looks so handsome!

I was going to recommend a rotary cutter, too. It even works on curves and such. I used to have a pair of Fiskars (I think that was the brand) that had rubber on the handles and they had some sort of spring mechanism. So, they would spring open and you just had to use your hand strength to shut them. So, that should help with hand fatigue.

Wow, that queen of hearts dress is gorgeous! I love all the polka dots and your applique is flawless. Alice is cute too, maybe teacups on the apron instead of the white rabbit? I saw a cute one on-line with teacups along the bottom of the apron and it was adorable.

I usually use those fancy buttons for scrapbooking, not sewing! Your nemo shirts came out great and I love the round neck one for you.

Thank you! I thought about teacups, but I wanted the applique to really disneyize it. KWIM? I still haven't made up my mind though!

Wow!!! That is awesome There are so many lucky little ones getting to wear all of the beautiful stuff displayed on here. I have some steam a seam to try to make one (applique) for an upcoming trip...got any tips?

My tip is... You can do it!!! Seriously though, when I first started sewing, I did more applique than sewing, and I mostly recommend that you use stabilizer underneath your fabric! Also, bobbin thread really helps the stitches on top to stay nicely packed together. There have been some wonderful tutorials on this thread for more tips! Check the bookmarks!

And thank you for the kind words! I don't usually sew for myself (other than some appliques for special events like Disney and the Elmo show we all went to!), but I'm trying to start!!

these are both GREAT! I love the queen of hearts! I have that design and I've not stitched it out yet. What problems are you having with the rabbit? I've not stitched it out yet either. I'm wondering if I should test it.

I had two major issues that I was unhappy with... The first is that the outlines are all done in the colors of the fill (or fabric) and I wanted them done in black. Especially since I was doing a white rabbit on white fabric. Fine, just change the thread right? But they are all connected and can't be separated, so he would end up with a black tail and black eyeballs, and well... you get the idea. I was able to do most of it, but had to babysit the machine in order to change threads... very annoying and I don't want to do it again!

The more major issue is that there are, in many places, WAY too many stitches. Especially satin stitches over satin stitches. I turned my machine down to 350 stitches per minute (it does 800) and tried to take it slowly, but I still bent or broke THREE needles doing that darn design! Very, very frustrtating....

These are adorable. Was the Queen of Hearts Applique difficult? How did you do it? Is it a design you buy from an embroidery website?

I love the Cars shirt. Mater is both of my kids favorite character from that movie. What a great job! Is the Mater a Pillowcase? I really like the Nemo shirts too!

Thanks! The Queen of Hearts is an embroidery design I got from a seller on ebay. I have stitched out four designs from her at this point and have been happy with two and pretty unhappy with two... This one was easy enough, but the appliques in general are VERY putsy and this one has quite a few fabrics to add. I love how it turned out though! I just wish the details of her face were in black - might try to change that the next time...

The Mater is from a wall panel that has Lightning McQUeen (DS's fave) and Mater. I did the Mater first in case it didn't work! But he loves it!

I am sooo happy to say that my little Rylie is allll better! She has been her happy go lucky little self for the past 2 days and I am LOVING it!

We brought our baby home today! She's not used to grass and she loves rolling around on the lawn.

so far she is SOOOOOO good! I'm knocking on all the wood I can find, I know puppies aren't easy, but she is an angel so far. She gets tired and goes and sleeps in her crate. She has so far only "pottied" when we've had her outside. She is breaking my heart though. We bought her a little doggy teddy bear and I took it when we picked her up and rubbed it on her mommy's fur to get her scent, and Izzy (her name is Sunny Isabella but we call her Izzy, except Lily who calls her Belle--it's a princess thing I think, she can say Izzy just fine) anyhoo, Izzy can totally smell her mama and is using the bear as a pillow.

I plan to add two more rows of elastic to the back tonight - I'm hoping it will help it fit a little better. It also turned out a smidge longer than I was hoping for, but its okay...

I forgot to add my Nemos! I made a button down shirt for DS... this is a close-up of the fish buttons he made me use... I will NOT be buying anymore buttons with shanks. I really did not enjoy sewing them on!

And I made my DD a round neck top with the same fabric, but I couldn't get her to model it and didn't get a pic before it was in the laundry (and I'm not pulling it out to iron it before its washed! ) It looks just like this one I made for me though... I have been wanting to do a top like this for me, but couldn't find a pattern, so I made my own and basically used the directions for DD's round neck pattern (YCMT). Mine doesn't have buttons at the shoulders though. When I make this with "real" fabric for me (I have some Michael Miller Ginger Blossom I want to use), I will do a couple of things differently so hopefully it won't look quite so muu-muu in the front...

I apologize it isn't quite in focus... my photographer is 6!

Hmmm... I would definitely try switching out or adding more stabilizer. It *might* be a tension issue, but I wouldn't know the first thing about fixing that. If you use matching bobbin thread, it will be less noticeable, BUT you won't get as tight a finish on the top satin stitches. (bobbin thread is 60 weight while embroidery thread is 40 weight - regular sewing is 50, the higher the number the thinner the thread) I also don't know about rayon vs. poly with Gutterman. I use Mettler! I'm sorry you're having trouble!

I remember going in for my 37 week check up with my 3rd being ready to beg them to induce me. My BP was a little high so they scheduled me for an induction at 38 weeks. I do remember how miserable I was. Only a few more days for you.

I use a rotary cutter for straight lines and regular scissors for curves. I do have a rubber handled spring scissors like Heather is talking about and I use them for scrapbooking. They are really great: I take them in when I am volunteering so I don't have to use the crummy school scissors.

I use a stablizier on all appliqués to prevent this. The iron-on tear away kind is great. HTH!

Just in case ya'll thought I was laying around all week while the kids were gone, I'll show off something I did. I have no idea if it will fit a human child, it's a panel of Marie I got from and then I shirred the back of the peasant blouse. Of course all the ruffles on the skirt took the longest because I refuse to learn how to use my ruffler. When Megan comes home I will see if it fits and then I plan on making another for the big give.

Thank you for all the helpful tips!

I am using a cut away stabilizer on the back it is pretty heavy.
I switched to Black thread in the bobbin. It turned out GREAT.
So I switched on the camera to take a photo and it says the battery is dead.

I will have to charge the battery before I can share pictures.

I was going to say this too. Since I got my rotary cutter, I can't remember the last time I used regualar scissors to cut out any pattern. They work on the straight parts and the curves!
