Package cancelation ?

We are in the process of planning a vacation for spring break. My DH is worried that something may come up that we would have to cancel. It is my understanding that we put $200 down now to hold the reservation and in the event that we have to cancel before final payment, we will get that refunded. Is that correct?

I don't believe so. You MUST buy the insurance if you want any of your money back upon cancellation. You will get 100% back minus your insurance cost if you cancel with an accepted reason. And I think it depends on how many days out from your arrival date as to the percentage you get back. Google Disney World travel protection insurance and read the link to the Disney World site.

If you have to cancel a Disney Package more than 45-days prior to travel: You'll receive a full-refund, no problem.
Less than 45-days prior to travel:
You will be charged $200, unless you have insurance.

You can cancel a room-only reservation up until FIVE days before check-in (Six days if you booked online).
The penalty for cancelling a room-only reservation is 1-night's deposit.

If you need to make a change/adjustment to a room-only or a package reservation, they charge $50 under the 45-day mark for packages.

Change/adjustment to a room-only reservation after the 5-day mark: $50.

Unfortunately I may have to cancel my Feb. trip if the 4 days my son just missed due to Hurricane Isaac are "made-up" during the time our trip is planned, eeeek!

This is not correct. You can cancel anytime prior to the 45 day mark (which is when final payment for a package is due) and get all of your money back. If you cancel 44 days or less prior to arrival, you can still cancel but will be charged a $200 cancellation fee.

OP......If you want more time for cancellation, you could book room only and buy your tickets separately. This would require a deposit equal to 1 night's room rate + tax, with the balance due at check in. Cancellation for a room only reservation must be done at least 5 days prior to arrival to receive a full refund.

So if we decide to shorten the stay by one night, as long as we do it before 45 days out, there is no charge, but after 45 days they would charge $50. Right? It's so hard to plan this far out, but I don't want the rooms to get booked up and then I want to make dining reservations.

Yes. You have absolutely no risk whatsoever up until 45 days out meaning you'll get 100% refunded. Inside 45 days, I believe you forfeit the deposit, but I believe you can change your reservation for a $50 fee. Thus, I would think that it would be possible to change the reservation to a much later time (if you planned to ultimately go) and lose only $50 instead of $200.

It is smart to book what you want now and change later if you have to. I wanted to add that if you made changes to your package 44 days or less prior to arrival and the total cost decreases, you will be charged the $50 change fee. However, Disney usually waives this fee if the total cost of your package increases (i.e., you upgrade your resort, room type, etc).

Changing the dates of a reservation should not incur the fee since you're not actually cancelling the reservation as you're just moving your trip dates.

One thing don't buy the insurance when you first make the $200 for the reservation. If you have to cancel you get the full $200 back. If you want the insurance add when you make your last payment. You have up to 45 days before you have to pay or cancel. If want to pay the rest 45 days before you arrive that fine. If you have to cancel 45 days out you get all back unless you brought the insurance which is why I don't add the insurance until the last payment. Good luck.

This exactly. No risk in cancelling before final payment so no reason to add insurance until then.
