My daughter and I are going on the Pacific Coast cruise in April. We are going up the coast to Canada. Does the ship get close enough to the coast to see the lights of the different cities? I'm trying to decide whether to get a room that is a connecting room on starboard or a non-connecting room on port side? We asked for a non-connecting room because I thought it'd be quieter. Please correct me if I'm wrong :) The starboard side stateroom would be over the theater on deck 6.

The noise difference between a connecting and non-connecting room is much more of a concern than it needs to be. Yes, there is a door in the wall between the rooms, but it's actually 2 doors. The thickness of the 2 doors is pretty much the same as the wall thickness. If you have noisy neighbors, you're going to hear them, regardless if you have a connecting door or not. And, if the starboard room is over the theater, you could quite likely hear noise from that.

It could be possible to see the lights, but they're going to be fairly distant.

We did the Members Cruise May 2019 (San Diego to Vancouver) with a stateroom on the starboard side thinking we could see the coastline/mountains. But as @PrincessSchmoo said really nothing but water. Once we were getting close to San Francisco, yes the coastline was visible but we were too busy going under the Golden Gate Bridge early in the morning to take it in.

On the West coast, if I remember correctly, sea lanes for cruise ships are anywhere from 4 to 20 miles offshore. Cargo and petrol carriers, especially the latter, are usually much farther out. But even at 5-6 miles away, I doubt you'll see much. Considering conditions in spring on the coast, visibility may not be the greatest either.
