 Some people with small dogs think it’s OK for their dogs to attack larger dogs because it’s “So cute that my 10lb terrier chases your 100lb shepherd.”

I always drag my shepherds away. All the while, the owner’s stands there grinning while their little ankle-biters chase and bite my dog’s hind legs.

The other day I had had enough with one moron. Vicious little fluff-ball came in to the street after us (his dogs are never on a leash, mine always are). This time I let my dogs stand their ground. Owner didn’t think it was too ‘cute’ when my dog picked up his little dog, shook it like a rag-doll and threw it a good 10 yards through the air. Oddly enough, he actually got upset this time (who da thunk it!?).

I hate to see a dog hurt, but if the owners won’t do anything about viciousness, then it’s time for a little Darwinism.

Thanks for the rant.

These people are morons...you don't let your dog of any size go after another dog...I mean you are just putting your own dog and the other one in jeopardy. What was this guy thinking??? My 55 lb bulldog had a ****zu try to go for her jugular once and people across from us have a Yorkie who I often find running loose. They are so lucky my baby isn't mean...that Yorkie came rushing at Winnie barking and growling. One bite and that dog would have been a goner. So sad when people do not take proper care of their animal companions. Your dogs should not be subjected to a dog of ANY size showing aggression to them.

Unfortunately for you, if your big dog hurts his little dog it will still be your dog labeled "Vicious". I think your best recourse is to report this guy for violating the leash law and let the police deal with it.

OMG, as an owner of a big dog who gets tormented by two different neighbors' little yappers, I totally agree!

However, I don't agree with your method of dealing with it. It could really come back to bite you in the butt. I understand your frustration, but you don't want to get in trouble over it.

This has happened to me many times and my border collie has given his fair share of flying lessons. ;) I called the SPCA after one attack by the white fluff balls and they said as long as I had my dog on the leash I'm fine. :paw:

Are you serious? Yes, all dog owners should keep their dogs on a leash and under control, but what your dog did could have killed that dog!

My dog is not nice to other dogs. I don't bring her into situations that could be a problem, but I do want to socialize her better, which will eventually mean having her be close to other dogs. I want to be able to bring her to the bus stop with me, but there is one woman who brings her puppy who is not leashed (and she doesn't even bring a leash for it). I will let her know that my dog is not too friendly to other dogs, especially unleashed dogs who approach her. Hopefully she will keep her dog under control. But I would do everything in my power to avoid my dog hurting her dog, even if she has been warned.

Dead serious. I will not take my dog in for stitches or puncture wounds again because someone can't/won't control their dog because I'm restraining mine from protecting themselves.

Even at the expense of letting your own dog get hurt?

I totally agree with being the owner of two big shepherds. People think its cute and funny when there little dog goes after mine. I was in the park and had to yell at a older man whose cocker spaniel was attacking my 90lb male, I mean give me a break.(FYI) And no you would get in trouble if your dog is on the leash and their dog is not. I know because the man threaten me with calling the dog officer and I told him to go ahead. And believe it or not I was right because of the leash law..:good vibes

We have two 100+ pound labs that we walk daily. We carry a large Maglite flashlight with us night or day. Sorry, but if a dog not on the leash charges us and is threatening us or our dogs, we will thump them.

Of course this is a last resort, but I have no tolerance for people that ignore the leash law and think it's neat to let their dogs run free.

We have only had one incident - where another lab charged us.... my sweet loving black lab was going to protect us all and he backed him down in a hurry. The only time I have ever seen him bear his teeth!!! Anyway, the owner was high tailing it after her dog and she got ahold of him before any damage was done to either party.

I can understand having a dog in your yard without a leash, while you are watching them closely. But letting them out the door for the day to run the neighborhood? That is just asking for trouble, IMO.

No, I can't say that I'd let my dog get hurt. The dogs in our neighborhood would not be intending to hurt my dog. They would be annoying, not dangerous.

What a pain that people are letting vicious dogs, even if they are small, loose to run around.

I had the same problem. A ten pound Border Terrier was always going after my German Shepherd and grabbing him by the scruff of the neck. It was an aggressive move, not a playful one. After several times, my Shepherd grabbed him by the scruff of the neck(no shaking involved), and flung him to the side. The other dog wasn't injured, well maybe his pride ;) . The terrier was on much better behavior after that!!!!

:( People who do that annoy me. I have a little terrier who gets fiesty with some large dogs, (we had to seperate him from my neighbors Mastiff one day because Dodger was getting to rough...Dodger weighs 14 lbs, Hooch the Mastiff weighs 120..we were worried about Hooch) and we know the first signs of it and seperate before there are problems. It's not cute. It's irresponsible and one of the dogs could get hurt.

OMG :rotfl: There are some people I would like to do that to. I agree, annyoing little dogs are one thing, mean little dogs are another. And no, I wouldn't sit back and let my big dog get hurt...and I'd have some harsh words for the owner of the ankle biter too. :dog:

I guess I should thank God that I don't anyone who thinks that is cute. I have a 4 pound Yorkie who can be snippy with other dogs, that is why I restrain her. We've never had any problems with anyone's dogs.

I have an adverage dog. Not too big, not too small. But I know what you mean about nasty little bug eyed rat dogs. My friend has one, and thinks its the cutest thing in the world for that monster to attack larger dogs!

I have a big dog, too. It really aggravates me that my large dog is well trained, socialized and friendly to other dogs, and that many people don't seem to think that they need to train and socialize smaller dogs. All dogs need to be socialized. :dog2:

I also get annoyed when owners of small dogs automatically assume that my dog is vicious because he's big, when it's been my experience that the larger dogs are usually trained better than the smaller ones (we live in a very dog friendly condo, so my pooch sees lots of other dogs all the time).

One of the very reasons I swear I will never get a little dog.

We have two large dogs.. one is 104 pounds. He is the sweetest, gentlest dog I have ever seen. He is TERRIFIED of little dogs and has literally wet himself he has been so frightened.

I would seriously have to restrain myself from drop kicking someone little ankle biter if it went after my big baby.

(no flames please.. I know there are many many small dog owners who are very responsible.. it's the ones that are not that shouldn't be allowed to have dogs..same with large breed dog owners)

I have a small 8lb Shih Tzu. He's always on a leash. He actually likes other dogs (adores my mom's Scottie and Rottweiler). However, he doesn't like kids. I've tried obedience and socialization. He just point blank doesn't like kids he doesn't know. So, even to go potty he's on a leash so he can't get near anyone I don't want him near.

However, for the OP letting her dog shake and throw the other dog. That was just as irresponsible as the owner of the unleashed dog. Needless to say, really no reason for a rant when you stoop to the same level. I would think calling the police or dog control would of been the correct course of action here.

Letting your leashed dog defend themselves and you from an attack is not irresponsible. It's nearly impossible to get an attacking dog (even a small one) off and away from your dog until their owner gets a hold of them. If the OP been able to do this in the past, it's admirable.

Dogs that cannot be controlled by voice commands have no business being off leash outside of their home, period. When you choose to let a dog off the leash, it's your fault if they get hurt or killed, whether it be by dog fight or passing car.

No one here wants to see any animal hurt, that's what the rant is about. Just because the dog is small, doesn't mean it's harmless.
