Jeff Smoker who was well known for High School football in our area went on to rather succesfull College Football Career for Michigan State - starting quarterback. They just announced that he has been suspended indefinitely for drug use. He is such a role model for the young kids in our area -- including my 13 year old son who really looks up to him. What the heck was he thinking? He may have ruined his chances at an NFL shot. He is currently a Junior.

Has me angry! Our town has backed him up so much -- and I am feeling very let down by him!

That's really sad, but of course this kid has got to be held responsible for his actions. Hopefully, he'll learn something from his mistake.

Wovenwonder, I know how your community must be feeling.

We're holding our breath for our latest hometown hero. Mike Williams was a star football (and basketball) player at my son's high school. He came from a very troubled background and has had a lot of problems. 3 families that I am friends with basically raised him during his 4 years in high school, and put in many hours and $$$ trying to get him on the right track.

He's now playing at USC on a full scholarship and is one of the team's leading receivers, as a true freshman! He's being touted as the next Keyshawn Johnson and will probably turn pro after his junior year.

We all have our fingers crossed that he can make a successful future for himself.

I really do wish nothing but the best for Jeff. I hope this was a big eye opening to him and I hope he can get his life back on track. I watched this kid grow up. But he is an adult now and is paying hard for his actions.

I'm glad to see they suspended him! One slip up and as you can see, you're no longer a role model for kids.

Groosch! That is sad.

Was it a performance enhancing drug use? I know that there's an aweful lot of pressure put on guys (and increasingly gals too) to 'dance the jig' with some real nasty stuff...like steriods. :(

He'd have to do a lot worse than that to get himself kick out of the NFL. Was it drugs - steroids or drugs - recreational?

I am sure there is more to the story. Most employers or organizations do give you ample time to get help before indefinite suspension.
So what was the drug use?

Same thing happened here recently. We had a local kid that was an incredible running back in HS. He was considered one of the top players in the state... and nation. After heavy recruiting from a number of top national college football programs he picked the University of Michigan. He had "NFL" written all over him. His senior year in HS was tempered when he was busted for pot possession. To compound things he continued to claim it wasn't his and he was just holding it for an friend. Strike one. Several months later, before college started, he was busted AGAIN for the same thing. Plus he tested positve for pot in a urine test. AGAIN, the bag wasn't his and he claimed the THC in his system was from second hand smoke only! Strike two. Michigan agreed to honor his scholarship, but with a zero tolerance stipulation. To everyone's dismay, but not totally unexpected, he was summarily kicked off the team without comment his Freshman year. Since then he's faded away. What an incredible waste!!!
