So, it's official...I'm the slowest updater in Dis history!! In my defense, I was sick, Gus was sick, my 87 year old grandma (who lives with me) had pneumonia, it was Gus & I's 9th year together so we went to Vegas to celebrate and now I'm sick once again!! Nothing like an endless cycle of excuses!!
Day 5, Bonus Feature...
I realized I completely forgot that on Saturday night (Day 5) we spent a few hours at Jellyrolls (a dueling piano bar) at the Boardwalk. We used to have something similar out here in So. Cal called Sing Sing but it's now closed. Anyway, since it was Saturday night we paid $10 bucks each to get in and the place was packed. We got lucky about 20 minutes later when a couple sitting right in front of where we were standing gave up their seats! We ordered a few drinks, ate some popcorn and sang along to all the usual stuff like Sweet Caroline & Margaritaville. After about 2 hours we headed back to our room. Not sure how I forgot those 2 whole hours but I have almost hit the ripe old age of 32!! lol.
So, it's finally time for Day 8....Segways!!
The plan was to have breakfast at Pepper Market but neither of us could get moving once the wake up Stitch called so we decided to skip breakfast and use that credit on our last day. After we were on the road we found we were hungry after all and there was really no time to stop so we drove thru the ginormous happy meal for a small McBreakfast.
It's about 10:15 when we pull into Fort Wilderness and since we have about an hour to kill we hop on the bus that takes you to the Pioneer Hall area. At this point Gus is already foaming at the mouth and twitching with anticipation to get his hands on a Segway...again! Nevermind, that we've already taken the Segway Around the World tour & Washington DC by night tour! lol. We spend some time walking around the Settlement area and down by the marina.
Gus decides we must walk by Mickey's Backyard BBQ to see if anyone else is there yet so we head over and of course no one is there waiting an hour early!! We've been here before for Hoop-De-Doo but it was always dark and crowded so I never noticed just how quiet and peaceful it is here!!
We keep walking past the BBQ area and come upon Tri-Circle D Ranch where we meet some new friends of the non-Dis variety!!
Meet Dan, my new favorite Equus Caballus!!
Awww, friends forever!!
John was a man's man.
We loved having the horses all to ourselves!! However, there were signs posted not to touch them which was a bummer since Dan & John were very friendly and were just begging to be scratched!! We couldn't help but touch them! Since we were in there a good half hour a cast member eventually came and we asked them why you couldn't touch them and he explained that a bunch of the horses got sick a year or so back and it had something to do with all the germs people carry around on their hands. So, we said goodbye to our new friends and promised to stop by on our next visit!
After washing our hands, we strolled over to the petting farm that's not really a petting farm since you can't touch them either. Booo! But it was still fun seeing all the creepy little mini horses.
It was finally the moment Gus had been waiting the whole trip for....
We are still a few minutes early so they offer us a bottle of water and we wait for the others in our group to show up. That's when we meet some fellow Diser's Dane & Roxane from Rhode Island! It didn't take long to figure out we had a ton in common and they made the experience that much better!!
Around 11:20 everyone had showed up and we began all the legal stuff like the safety video and death waiver. Ok, so there was no death waiver but I'm pretty sure somewhere in the paperwork they protect themselves against death by Segway.
** Segway Fun Fact - on our Segway Tour in Washington D.C. our guide was really laid back and pretty much let us do what we wanted. So, Gus talks him into letting us use the higher speed and he gives in!! I tried to warn him that Gus is a limit pusher but he had them fooled! Keep in mind there are 10 of us zipping around the busy streets of D.C and it was most people's first time on a Segway!! I had a bad feeling about this!! Well, not more than 15 minutes later an older gentleman tries to squeeze in between two poles in front of the Capitol Building but hits them head on and goes flying over his Segway at about 7 mph...landing face first on the sidewalk!!
So, we all roll over to see if he's ok and he's not getting up. The guide comes over and after about 5 minutes he's able to get him standing but his face is bleeding and he's eye is brusing badly. There was some debate on whether to call an ambulance but the man insisted he was ok so we took a 15 minute break and then pushed on. Anyway, he really should have gotten some help since his eye was completely swollen shut by the end of the tour. And the crazier part is the person he was with was crossing the street at full speed a few minutes later and ran straight into the side of the building without even slowing down!! He bounced right off the Segway onto his butt but ended up being fine. Anyway, point being...there's a reason they cap the speeds on those things!!!
Next, we do the training course which is pretty boring if you've been through this a couple times before! I think they need to come out with intermediate sessions for those who have done the training a few times already. It kind of sucks to have to spend 30 minutes training when you could be riding around already. And that's when I saw the seed starting to grow. Gus was already trying to show Dane how to ride his Segway over rocks and hills. I stuck back with Roxane who had just ran into the instructor.
After that he would jump out in front of her on purpose just to make sure she could stop in time. I'd say he got lucky about half the time!! Poor Roxane!!
But by the end of training everyone seemed comfortable enough to explore so off we went!!
I'm taking the pic & Gus is about 3 people ahead of me.
Basically we toured the various grounds around Fort Wildness, which are huge!! Along the way they would throw out random fun facts but you had to be closer to the front to hear them. You weren't supposed to take pictures while driving but this was the first time someone had told us we couldn't and being the rule breaker that I am...I snuck in a few. I understand why they frown upon this but we were encouraged on our first two Segway tours to use our camera's as much as we wanted so I'm kind of a pro at it now.
They do stop towards the middle of the tour for pictures...
A Happy Gus!!
New Friends!! Hi Roxane & Dane!!
Overall, we like the normal Segways better than the off-road model since they handle better. Gus like to do donuts and I like to cut corners quickly so the smaller tires and wheel base on the normal segways work better for this.
Kids, don't try this at home!! hehe The tour was still mucho fun and I'd recommend to anyone who is into this sort of adventure!!
After the tour Roxane and Dane told us about Welcome Home Wednesdays held at the Boardwalk resort and we agreed to meet them there since we are DVC members and had never been. Once Dane told Gus about the free cheese popcorn it was a done deal!!
We then headed over to Epcot to just hang out for a while before our dinner ADR at my favorite...Le Celliar!!
We took a ride on Test Track, Mission Space & Universe of Energy! And then headed over to dinner!!
We checked in right on time at 6:30pm. We were seated right away and had a friendly enough waitress. Gus and I both ordered the 7-oz Filet Mignon Glazed with Maple Barbeque Sauce and accompanied by Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes - which I just read was taken off the menu last month!!!!! That just completely breaks my heart since this was truly my favorite meal ever!!! It's also extremely popular!!
For dessert I had the chocolate mouse head which I always love! Gus had a tangerine sorbet that he wasn't to fond of. Anyway, now that they took away the thing I loved the most I doubt we will go back here since everything is starting to be the same as everywhere else. So sad!!
After dinner we caught Illuminations...reflections of earth...once again and ended the night hanging out at Adventure's Club!! Kungaloosh!!
Coming up eventually... Our blustery day at Typhoon Lagoon!!
