Our lucky, last minute, upgraded, OBC winning, Mexican Riviera Cruise 3/27/11

After the movie, we had time for lunch at Parrot Cay. This ended up being our favorite place for breakfast and lunch. The buffet seemed much nicer than Beach Blanket and we enjoyed having our drinks brought to us and the better salad bar here.

Here’s my lunch, I enjoyed the rosemary polenta cakes, grilled asparagus, and gnocchi with sun dried tomato sauce.

Here’s DW’s lunch.

After lunch, it was time for the Disney Vacation Club Member Reception. This time, it was in Studio Sea, which was a better setting than Diversions where it was on our last cruise. In any case, it’s a boring presentation where they talk about the latest additions to DVC (this year it’s Aualani in Hawaii) and try to get you to buy more points. We have been DVC members since ’98 and have no intention of adding points. But we did get free drinks, Blue Hawaiian for DW and plain punch for me (I don’t drink). They also had cookies, but since we just ate, we weren’t interested in those. We have so many DVC lanyards we never wear, but we got even more this time, along with baseball hats. We watched the presentation, we played a trivia game for prizes (we won a passport case), and I was ready to leave after 20 minutes, but it slowly dawned on me they were going to keep us for an entire hour! I wanted to go, but DW said she wasn’t leaving because she wanted to win the $300 onboard credit. We had to wait until the very end for the big moment. We never win anything, and so I just figured DW was not going to get that OBC. So they had all our names in a bag, and they shook it up and pulled out a name. The guide paused, read the name out loud, and it was our name! We won the OBC! We were so excited and clapped and cheered and probably made everyone else jealous. Oh well, one more good thing that happened to us on this cruise! Sure glad I stuck it out! Too bad there’s no casino on the ship, we had luck on this trip for sure.

So far:

1. Booking this cruise at the last minute, getting the very last 11c guaranty cabin.
2. Getting a great upgrade from standard inside cabin to Deluxe outside cabin.
3. Getting a table for two and the rotation we wanted (PTTATPA)
4. Managing to get both Palo ressies I wanted after getting on board (nothing was available online).
5. Winning a $300 on board credit from DVC!

Not bad for booking just 3 weeks before sail date!

So, with the OBC, our Palo ressies were paid for, as well as our tips. I don’t drink, and DW brought a box of wine on board (which she didn’t even finish). She ordered a glass of wine at Palo, and we had Perrier’s every night at Wavebands, so our bar bill was small, but covered as well. We didn’t do any shore excursions, since I prefer to explore on my own. We got off the ship with a $31 bill! We did pay for water taxis in Cabo and taxis in Puerto Vallarta, as well as souvenirs and that was all cash off the ship.

After all that excitement, we went back to the room to rest. Tonight was formal night and the Golden Mickey’s. We went to the show at 6:15, and then back to our room to get dressed. I’m a shorts and t-shirt kind of guy, but I don’t mind getting dressed when it’s appropriate to. That said, I could care less what anyone else wears to dinner. I know that’s a big issue to some people on Dis and CC, but I never understood why it would matter to anyone else what someone chooses to wear. It just seems a bit shallow to me. Anyway, we saw the show, which is always fun and then got dressed and headed to the captain’s reception, where we met the captain and took a picture (not sure why) and then went into Triton’s for dinner.

We enjoyed our dinner, then headed back to the room to change. We then went to Wavebands for the evening entertainment.

Day 2- second day at sea.

Our second day at sea started out by sleeping in. Today, we had reservations for Palo brunch at 10am, so we just ordered some coffee and fruit from room service. After a while, we got ready and headed up to deck 10 and were seated pretty quickly and given a tour of the buffet.

It was an excellent brunch.

After brunch, we went to the pool for a while and enjoyed the sun. Loungers were all taken and chairhogs were quite evident, but a lady leaving for lunch did give us her lounger, so DW and I shared it. After a while, I got bored and went back to the room to shower and read. DW came back a while later and we went to the show which was a comedian. I don’t remember which one, but we enjoyed all the comedians. There was a juggler, a ventriloquist, and a physical comedian. We liked the physical guy most, Heath Heche.

After the show, we changed and then went to dinner at Triton’s. Since we had brunch, we skipped lunch and we were hungry. We decided to go for the four courses since Triton’s is our favorite restaurant.

DW had the avocado citrus salad,

tomato soup

and steak

She liked the salad and the steak, but didn’t like the potatoes or the soup.

I had the French onion soup

Bacon mushroom tart

and the lamb shank on polenta

I loved my lamb shank, it was excellent. The soups was also good, but didn’t really care for the tart.

We enjoyed another great meal at Triton’s. I was ready to slow down on what I was eating, though. We had a lot of rich food the past two days.

Palo brunch is so good!!! Makes me wish I was there :) I had the lamb shank, as well.... yummy!!! Loving your report! We went in March, and it is bringing back some great memories!

Thanks for the trip report. I just stumbled upon it and love hearing about everyone's trip so far. Really loving the pictures! Post some more if you get the chance!
