Pre-Trip Report Summary:
Back in 1999 Rob, Derek, Joey and I enjoyed a wonderful seven day WDW vacation which was to be a once in a lifetime vacation for us, and as many of you have found, that is almost impossible. Once you’re there, it’s hard to stay away. Rob and I had both gone as kids for a few days but was not a total Disney vacation, which I think makes all the difference in the world.

Anyway, to help the post Disney depression, we booked a 2nd family vacation to WDW for January 2001. Once we got home and showed my parents the vacation videos and pictures they decided they’d join us. We initially booked two rooms for the Port Orleans Resort but changed it to the All Star Movies since we had such a good time at the All Star Music Resort back in 1999 and would save quite a bit of money. We ended up paying $66 a night per room with our annual passholder’s discount – not too shabby!!!

It’s amazing how fast two years actually goes when you’re looking forward to something…

Trip Report

Day 1 – January 25, 2001
Our 10 passenger white stretch limo arrived at exactly at it’s scheduled time of 5:30 a.m. – awfully early, but who can sleep knowing we’re going to WDW, anyway?

We got to the airport at about 6:30 a.m. which meant we had a little bit of time to spare between then and our 9:00 a.m. flight. We decided it was the perfect opportunity to have breakfast although since I was so anxious all I had was juice and a grilled roll.

Anyway, our US Air Metrojet flight took off at its scheduled time and even arrived a few minutes early, encountering no problems (thank goodness!) When we touched down in Orlando, weather was sunny, in the low 60’s and a little breezy – cool for Florida standards although much nicer than the 20 degree F temps we left from Boston in.

After tracking down our Happy Limo driver (he was waiting for us on another floor), we were on our way to “The World!” After two years of waiting, it was finally here!!!

Checking in was a breeze at the All Star Movies Resort with no wait at all and even though it was only 1:30, our rooms were ready – yeah! Instead of checking our luggage at bell services, we brought them ourselves so we would avoid the delay. A few days prior to our arrival I had faxed the resort with our requests: smoking (for my mother, unfortunately), Fantasia, connecting rooms, first floor, poolside. We received all requests except that instead of the Sorcerer Mickey section of Fantasia we were in Fantasia 2000 and they were both great rooms! I can agree with some other comments I’ve read regarding noise levels and rooms right by the pool – we did hear quite a bit of outside noise from the pool and also from people walking by the room although it wasn’t enough to keep us awake, thankfully. If you are a light sleeper, you may want to consider having a room in some of the other buildings, such as Mighty Ducks, Love Bug or Toy Story. Although some buildings were obviously closer to Cinema Hall (food court and check in area), none of them were too far away.

Anyway, we took the time to unpack and shortly after found ourselves on a Disney bus headed to the Magic Kingdom and were greeted by the 3:00 Magical Moments parade – both Mom and I were teary eyed. What a great start to our magical vacation!

Unfortunately at this point, hunger got the best of us, so we followed our noses to the Columbia Harbor House. Rob, Mom, Dad and I all had the Captains Platter (fried chicken and fish) while the kids opted for the macaroni and cheese. We had eaten here on our last vacation and found the food to be really good and this time didn’t disappoint either.

Once everyone was good and full, off we head to the Haunted Mansion – one of our all time favorite rides! After picking up our hitchhiking ghosts, off to Tomorrowland we head where we stayed the rest of the night. We rode Space Mountain (which was down our last vacation), Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, the People Mover (yes, I know “they” call it something else now) and Alien Encounter – all with either a 5 minute or less wait, even Space Mountain (this would change later on in the week.) To end our day at the Magic Kingdom, we stayed to enjoy Fantasy in the Sky and were sprinkled with Tinkerbell’s fairydust, welcoming us to the most magical place on earth.

We browsed the shops instead of rushing right to the busses – what a difference 30 minutes makes! We had no wait for the bus and it was right there waiting for us. Much better than standing in line for the busses with everyone else (which we did last time!) Never again!

Back at the resort, we bought our refillable mugs (great program) and Derek and I had carrot cake – had to get my veggies in for the day somehow! Hehehe.

Was in bed by 9:30 or so (can’t remember the exact time.) What a wonderful first day – Disney World is the best place on earth!!

Day 2 – January 26, 2001
Mickey woke us up at 7:00 a.m. – boy was I glad to hear his voice! Wish he could wake me up every morning.

Today was an MGM day, and we were in the park by 9:00 a.m. or so although we would’ve been there sooner had our bus not taken forever to pick us up! Not sure what took it so long but by the time we boarded there were a TON of people waiting. We watched several busses come and go for the other stops. Oh well, we finally made it.

MGM has got to be one of my favorite parks – it’s a toss up between the Magic Kingdom and MGM. I decided to purchase my first pair of ears and talked my mother into it too. We both looked very cute, I must say!!

We browsed a few shops and waited for the boys to do some pin trading which became a recurring theme throughout this trip. Our first ride however, was the Great Movie Ride which does have some construction going on but Disney has covered it up pretty well all in all. That morning we also did Drew Carey’s Sounds Dangerous (very cute – I was happily surprised), Star Tours and The Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular – all waits minimal at 10 minutes or less. For lunch we decided to try the 50’s Prime Time Café which turned out to be a real hoot! Our waiter, oops, I mean cousin, really got into it telling us to make sure we keep all elbows off the table, yelled at my Dad for keeping his hat on (the boys just loved that!), asking us what color the soap was, etc. We were seated next to two girls and “cousin” was trying to set them up with some guys from Brazil seated in the next room – what a riot. What was strange though, was that he took my meal away before I was done saying I spent too long eating then brought out a HUGE sundae for my mother and I to share even though we hadn’t ordered it. He said he “gave” it to us because we had been so good, but charged us $4.50 for the privilege. I know we should’ve said something, but didn’t. Luckily it was really yummy!! 

I ended up having Mom’s Fried Chicken that was very good but the portion was much to big for me. Rob had the meatloaf which he declared delicious as he cleaned the plate (no sticker though) while Derek and Joey had the kids chicken fingers. Mom also had Mom’s Fried Chicken (which we should have shared) – can’t remember what Dad had but whatever it was I know he enjoyed. Very expensive meal, but was a lot of fun – if for nothing else, at least go for the entertainment!

Once we finally got out of there (spent quite a bit of time in there), we headed over to the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Rockin Roller Coaster – especially fun right after eating a big meal, you know? Rob was the only sane person in the group who sat both rides out.

Once we’d been brought back from the Twilight Zone and finished enjoying our “limo ride”, we headed over to the Backlot Studios Tour which was pretty neat considering it was a first for all of us (as was the Indy show and Rockin Roller Coaster.) I noticed they still had a few things up from the Osborn Lights – will definitely have to come back during the Christmas season at some point.

It was now a little over an hour before Fantasmic! so we decided to head in that direction so we could get our seats – this would be another first for my parents although we had seen it before – this has got to be my favorite nighttime Disney show that I’ve seen – I ended up buying the CD before we left for home. By the time we actually found seats it was 45 minutes before showtime – there were already quite a few people there including a few tour groups. Luckily we only ran into them a few times and they didn’t seem to cause any problems aside from taking up a lot of space.

Maybe it’s just me, but I could have sworn that they’ve added a few things to the show since we last saw it in January – now I wish that we had taped it again. It was absolutely wonderful and again left me teary eyed (doesn’t take much for me at Disney!)

Again to avoid the herding of people at the “bus corrals”, we opted to browse a few more shops and after half an hour finally made it over to the empty waiting bus. We seem to be timing things just right! If you haven’t tried this yet, you may want to – great time to get some shopping done, too! 

Back at the resort we filled our mugs and browsed in Donald’s Double Feature for a while. I found a Mickey and Minnie Grand Floridian pin that I just had to have that would join my Rockin Roller Coaster pin that I had picked up earlier in the day – I’m pacing myself on the shopping front – wouldn’t last long, though. . .

Another wonderful day at the most magical place on earth!!!

Day 3 – January 27, 2001
Another wake up call from Mickey reminded us that we had a reason to “get up and at ‘em!” By 9:00 a.m. we were gazing at the giant golf ball that is Epcot’s landmark. I really wish that we had the opportunity to visit during the Millennium celebration, but at least Tapestry of Nations and Illuminations – Reflections of Earth were still going on. So far the “2000” part of the sign is down but of course the crane is still there screwing the pictures up. Oh – and for the record, I don’t think Leave a Legacy looks too bad although I do think the bricks were a better idea, in my opinion.

Anyway, since the World Showcase doesn’t open until 11:00 a.m., we headed towards Future World after riding inside of the golf ball – I mean, after riding Spaceship Earth – again was a walk on.

On we went into Innoventions (not sure which side) - the guys love it here, but we didn’t spend too much time here since there’s so much to see and do. Reminds me too much of a Best Buy. LOL

The Living Seas was the next area we went to. Unfortunately I find this pavilion to be a tad on the boring side aside from the manatees. It could be that I’ve just been to the Boston Aquarium too many times to count (which I actually do find interesting.) Kids had fun here though – they had a few hands on demonstrations they were able to participate in.

Next stop – Journey Into Your Imagination and I do have to agree that they should bring back Figment. This was another thing that was down last time so was glad to be able to go on it. To be honest, I can’t really remember what it was like before they revamped it – was too long ago so nothing to compare it too aside from the fact that I remember that Figment had a more prominent role. Was fun although once was enough.

From here we went to Honey I Shrunk the Audience – another first for my parents. I absolutely love this show and it was great watching Mom jump during the mice scene – I know, I’m mean! Hehehe.

By the time we were done with that it was lunch time, so we grabbed a quick bite at the Electric Umbrella – hot dogs for all except Joey who had chicken fingers, and Rob who had french fries.

The World Showcase is open by this time but we decide to Test Track first. We toyed with the option of getting Fast Passes and coming back but we once we were in World Showcase, we didn’t plan on coming back to Future World, so we decided to wait it out, and wait it out we did! Forty minutes of waiting, to be precise, and in my opinion, not worth it. It was fun, don’t get me wrong, I just wouldn’t wait more than 10 minutes tops for this ride. Fast Pass or the singles line is definitely the way to go for this one. While I’m on the subject, one thing I noticed while we were waiting was a whole family going through the singles line. They were aware that they would be split up, but one of the kids was just barely tall enough to go on and was quite young. The cast member tried to discourage the parents from letting him on by himself, but she couldn’t talk them out of it. Not sure if they ended up sitting together or not, but can’t believe someone would take the chance. Ok, off my soapbox.

Where was I? Oh yes, once we were done with Test Track (finally) we made our way over to the World Showcase, starting with Canada where we stayed to watch O’ Canada. This whole pavilion is so beautiful – we missed so much the last time we were here. Of course since we were in Canada, we just couldn’t pass up one of Bob’s Beaver Tails that I had heard so much of! I had the Strawberries and Cream – sooooo yummy! I think everyone else who had one had the hazelnut and chocolate – also very yummy. While we were enjoying these, we were surrounded by seagulls. There seemed to be birds everywhere this trip – seagulls, ducks, cranes . . . a few of us were dobbied on more than once. Oh well – I suppose if I were a bird, I’d be in WDW too.

The rest of the afternoon was spent enjoying the different pavilions, including the UK where we found the perfect spot to enjoy some afternoon beverages on their patio by the lagoon. Looking back at our trip, this was one of the most enjoyable times we had – it was the perfect day (lower to mid 70’s) with sunshine and it was just so peaceful. Wish I were there right now . . . Luckily we were able to catch the British Invasion before we moved on and boy am I sorry that we missed them last time. My parents are avid Beatles fans so I grew up listening to them – it was a trip down memory lane for the adults for sure. We also caught the street performers in the UK doing King Arthur and the Holy Grail – cute show.

Dinner was in Mexico during the Tapestry of Nations parade which made eating a little tricky since they turn off the lights for a while – I’m pretty sure we had nachos though. Their churros are pretty darn good too – if you’re in the mood for a sweet inexpensive treat, try one of these. They are hard to explain, but they are sticklike fried dough covered in cinnamon – crunchy on the outside and moist in the inside.

The remainder of the evening was spent enjoying a few more pavilions until the 8:10 Tapestry of Nations Parade and then Illuminations – Reflections of Earth at 9:00. I have to admit that I really didn’t care whether or not we saw the parade, but I am so glad that we did! We were in an area by ourselves and the parade people (marionettes) spent quite a bit of time with both boys – they made us feel as though they were performing just for us – so cool!! Once the parade was over, we basically just turned around and waited for Illuminations and all I can say is wow! What a moving show! I didn’t think they’d be able to top the original Illuminations but boy was I wrong! It really made you realize what wonderful things we can do if we can set aside our differences and focus on the important things. Even made my Mom cry – what an incredible show!!!!

After browsing the shops while waiting for the crowds to clear out, we immediately went back to the resort and crashed. The early mornings and late nights are really catching up with us.

Day 4 – January 28, 2001
Another wake up call at 7:00 a.m. from the “Big Cheese” himself and we’re ready for another day in Disney World after a breakfast of cinnamon raisin bagels. Today we decided to go to the Animal Kingdom then spend the evening at Downtown Disney. We were through the AK gates by around 9:00 a.m. or so and headed towards the Tree of Life to enjoy It’s Tough to be a Bug, another great 3D show. Again, although we have seen this before, my parents hadn’t so it was great fun watching them (or should I say my Mom) during some of the scenes. I had given my mother a heads up on the bees though since she has a phobia of them – she would have never forgiven me if I let that effect go by without advance warning.

Once we oohed and ahhed over the Tree of Life, we headed towards Asia and the Maharajah Jungle Trek – those bats are really neat – it’s too bad they’ve been given such a bum wrap because they really are magnificent creatures. This walk is very enjoyable since you go at your own pace (and was just what we needed after three days of commando mode.) The whole park is a lot more relaxed than any of the others, actually. While in this area, we also stayed for the Flights of Wonder show, although we almost passed it up. Boy am I glad we didn’t! My youngest son Joey was chosen to participate in the show and even received a certificate for his “magical moment.” Thank goodness I brought the camcorder that day – that’s something I bet he’ll remember for a long time.

Somewhere along our journey, we ran across the Kali River Rapids and although this looks like a lot of fun, we opted out of this one. We watched the rafts go by from one of the bridges and the people looked as though we were getting drenched – maybe on a hot day, but not today.

Kilimanjaro Safari was next and we ended up seeing all kinds of animals including both the male and female lions, cheetah, hippos, elephants (even a baby one –so cute), giraffs, flamingos (lots of them), tapirs, and I’m sure a few others I have missed. I do have to agree that the poacher scene is not needed to enjoy the ride although I don’t think it takes away from it, either. I do think it’s important to be aware of the poaching problems that do exist and for that reason I don’t think it should be removed from the safari.

It was right around now that hunger called to us so we decided to grab lunch at Pizzafari and were all pleasantly surprised. The kids had something unique – a grilled cheese pretzel which they both loved (looked pretty good.) Rob and my parents had the individual pizzas while I had one of the deli sandwiches and boy was it good. Disney’s food prices (along with everything else actually) are high, but at least you generally get your money’s worth.

Once our hunger has once again been curbed, we head towards Dinosaur (although it will always be Countdown to Extinction to me.) As I mentioned, it has been two years since we’ve been here and I heard that they toned this ride down when they renamed it. It seemed the same to me so must not have been all that much unless my memory isn’t very good. The picture they took on this ride came out pretty good so we got this one – it’s one of the few rides that they take pictures on where all six of us were on it.

Anyway, the kids were pestering us to go to the Boneyard so that was our next stop. Why is it that here we are in Disney World and the kids want to play in the playground – there are so many other things to do there. Oh well – gave them the chance to burn off some steam and gave the adults and opportunity to relax. Served its purpose, I guess.
It was now time for the next Tarzan Rocks! Show which was something that I had really wanted to see and I wasn’t disappointed in the least! (I’m not giving up the opportunity to see a nice looking guy in a loin cloth!) LOL I had read in other trip reports that people were complaining about how loud this show is and I do have to agree that yes it is loud, but at the same time no louder than a rock n roll concert which this was suppose to. Now, a Scorpion’s concert is loud (or should I say was loud – don’t think they’re still together – hehehe.) Tarzan Rocks was great and my only complaint is that I didn’t get to see it more than once. We also missed Festival of the Lion King which I hear is even better which means we definitely have to come back soon!!!

By the time the show let out it was only an hour or so before park closing time (which was 5:00 that night – is it always that early??), so we decided to grab a bus back to the resort and get ready for our night out at Downtown Disney. On our way out we grabbed two Simba paws and a frozen banana which we brought onto the bus with us, which was unfortunately standing room only. Well, about halfway back to the resort my son Joey starts laughing as does a woman who is sitting to the side of him. I could see that she had wiped something off of her lap so I had come to the conclusion that Joey must have dropped ice cream onto her lap, but when I asked him about it, she started giggling and told him not to say anything. The two of them giggled the rest of the ride back and her last comment was that she hadn’t laughed so hard since she was last at church. Of course once we got off I had to ask what happened and turns out that half of his Simba paw had landed right on her lap and I thank goodness that she thought it was so funny!!! I have to admit that if it had been me I would have been furious at the parents for letting the kid on the bus with an ice cream in the first place! Ok – lesson learned – won’t happen again!

After dropping off our pictures and cleaning up a bit (some of us were a mess from Simba paws!) we grabbed a bus to Downtown Disney – one of my personal favorite places in WDW! We spent quite a bit of time in Disney’s Days of Christmas – they have so many neat things! I ended up buying a glass blue ornament with Mickey and Minnie resin figures on top of it. The glass part says “Our Walt Disney World Vacation” and I had them personalize it by adding the year 2001. There were so many other things I wanted but it’s only day 4 – still have to pace myself! 

As we were walking around, we spotted Captain Jacks Margarita Bar, so we took some time to relax on the patio chairs by the water. It was such a perfect night temperature wise and it was so nice to just stop and enjoy our surroundings. Times like this it really sinks in that “we’re on vacation!”

Once we were done enjoying our pina colada’s and margaritas (yum), we decided to check out the World of Disney – man this place is huge! I could spend an entire day in here and not see everything I want to see – and buy!! The kids went wild with pin trading and pin buying which made the rest of us grumpy since we’re constantly stopping for that – it seemed as though the majority of our trip so far had been spent waiting for them to trade. Don’t get me wrong – I love pin trading myself, but it got out of hand . . .
Anyway, I couldn’t leave without bringing back a few things, so I picked up a really neat Minnie Mouse night shirt, a Mickey and Minnie WDW t-shirt, a WDW scrapbook, a few postcards and a Dopey Beanie. Don’t ask what I spent on these few things, but at least I saved a few dollars with my annual passholder’s discount. See – I SAVED money! Hehehe

Once we were done in there, we decided it was time for a quick bite for dinner and since the Gourmet Pantry was right there, that’s where we ended up. We thought we might save a few more bucks by just picking something quick up from there, but it wasn’t the case. At least everyone enjoyed what they got and we got to eat outside again as well. Certainly nice to be able to do that in January! While we were eating we watched a few teenagers soak themselves in one of the fountains even though they were fully clothed – looked like they were having a lot of fun, anyway.

The remainder of the evening was spent wandering around Disney’s West Side and we didn’t end up getting back to our resort until 11:30 or so – a very long day, but was wonderful! Still can’t believe we’re in Disney World!

Day 5 – January 29, 2001
If we thought yesterday was busy, today was even busier! After our very healthy breakfast of donuts, we were on our way to our second day at Disney’s MGM Studios so we could finish up what we hadn’t done on Friday.

Our first stop was Voyage of the Little Mermaid – what a cute show, and not just for the little girls, either (even my boys liked it, although they’d never admit it!) While we were in the area, we also did Muppet Vision 3D, The Magic of Disney’s Animation (*love* this show), Backstage Pass, and New York Street. For lunch we went to the Sci-Fi Dine In. We love this restaurant (we ate there in ’99 as well.) Both Rob and I had a burger with the works and a cookies and cream ice cream (calories don’t count on vacation, you know), and both boys had Asteroids which was the kids meal chicken fingers. Again, I really can’t remember what my parents had, but everyone enjoyed their lunches. Very expensive but I think it’s worth it for the experience.

Once we were done eating we decided to head back towards the Hollywood Tower of Terror and this time I got the seatbelt seat – I was so excited!! It’s not drastically different but you do get an extra thrill out of it in my opinion. I just love this ride – so much fun! While we were in the area, we also decided to go on Rock N Roller Coaster twice in a row (about a 5 minute wait both times) but for some reason it bother my head this time and ended up with a headache, which luckily didn’t last very long.

At this point, we had pretty much done everything that we had wanted to do at MGM, so decided to take a Friendship boat over to the Swan and Dolphin resort then walk over to the Boardwalk to check that out. Because of the time of day (mid afternoon), the Boardwalk area was pretty deserted. The surrey boats were tempting but for what they were charging for the half hour, we figured we find something else to do with our money. Speaking of expensive, while we were there, we checked out the Wyland Galleries – so many beautiful works of art, but the majority of the inventory was at least $1,000. Maybe in another life . . .
While we were at the Boardwalk, we decided to have refreshments at the Big River Grille and Brewing Works. My Dad is a big fan of micro brews, so he just had to check this place out. For the record, everyone who had the beer enjoyed it. I opted for the Irish Nut which is a specialty coffee – unfortunately I didn’t care for it at all – much too strong, although I’m not big on alcohol to begin with.

Once we were done checking out the Boardwalk (have to come back at night some time), we walked down towards the Yacht and Beach Clubs then on through the International Gateway into Epcot. We had heard all kinds of wonderful things about the cheese soup at Le Cellier’s and thought tonight would be a great opportunity to try it since we didn’t want anything too filling. Unfortunately they weren’t selling it at the cart that night but were able to get it “to go” at the restaurant itself. All I can say is YUM! We got the recipe from the internet somewhere and have made it quite a few times, but there’s was extremely good (although very pricey!) A lot of work goes into the preparation for it, and was happy to enjoy it without all the fuss! I should also mention that the kids decided they wanted popcorn for dinner – good dinner, huh? Well, we’re on vacation so that’s how I can justify it – veggies for the night right? Hehehe.

Since we had missed quite a bit of World Showcase when we were here on Saturday, we decided to spend the rest of the evening tooling around there after dinner. We were most interested in El Rio Del Tiempo in the Mexican Pavilion and Norway’s Maelstrom, which we were able to do – both as walkons.

Before our night at Epcot ended, we decided to splurge and have some treats at the Kringla Bakery – that’s all we could smell as we walked out of Maelstrom and our resistance was low. That’s my story, and I’m sticking with it! I had a very yummy albeit expensive cream horn, Derek had low fat strawberry mousse (ya – I know I should have gotten this as well), while Rob and Joey got cinnamon buns. Can’t remember what Dad had, and Mom didn’t have anything.

We didn’t stay for Tapestry of Nations or Illuminations – Reflections of Earth tonight since we’d had a late night last night – I spent the rest of the evening at the resort working on this report.

Day 6 – January 30, 2001
Another wake up call for 7:00 a.m. from Mickey starts off our day, and again we had donuts that Rob brought to us from the Premier Foodcourt. Today was a Magic Kingdom day but we’d have to leave early since we were having an adult’s night out and kids had reservations for the Neverland Club for 5:00 p.m.

As we were with almost all days, we were on our way by 8:30 a.m. hitting the parks by 9:00 a.m.which seemed to be good. Aside from a few isolated occurrences, the Disney busses were great with wait times of only a few minutes each morning. For some reason both mornings when we were waiting for the MGM bus, it took a good 10 minutes to show up and there were a ton of people waiting. It’s also a pain going from resort to resort which I’ll get into later in today’s report.
Anyway, as I mentioned, today was a Magic Kingdom day, which made me happy since it’s my favorite park. Every time I see the castle I start tearing up since I’m just so happy to be there! Yes I’m sappy!

Unfortunately, this was also the day our camera decided to croak, so one of our first stops was the camera center to buy a new one – bummer. Oh well – I had to have pictures, so didn’t have much other choice.

Once that was taken care of, we decided to head towards Adventureland where our first stop was the Swiss Family Treehouse which in my opinion is cool once, but that’s about it. We then headed towards the Jungle Cruise where they let Joey be the Skipper of the boat – and we made it back in once piece – bonus! Boy wasn’t he excited! Can you tell that he’s an extrovert? Of course you can’t go through Adventureland without stopping by the Enchanted Tiki Room – Under New Management. I used to like the old show, but I really like this new one as well, too. Zazu is cool!! Did you know that the guy who plays Mr. Bean is the same guy who does the voice for Zazu? Well now you do! We were then off to see the Pirates of the Caribbean – another favorite! I still think that’s it’s silly that Disney felt obligated to revamp the ride so as to be more politically correct, but I won’t get into that.

From there we headed to Frontierland where the boys rode Splash Mountain. I would have liked to go on too, but the people coming off the ride seemed to be pretty wet, and I just wasn’t in the mood to deal with that – maybe tomorrow?? Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was next and since there was only a five minute wait, we did this twice – woo hoo! Well, all aside from Rob, of course, who I already mentioned doesn’t do coasters.

One thing that we really wanted to do this time was Tom Sawyer Island since we didn’t do it last time, that was our next stop. Once you make your way around the island, you very conveniently find yourself at Aunt Polly’s Dockside Inn where we decided to have lunch of sandwiches and chips (which is basically your only choice.) Very pricey for what we had but was good and filled the hole. The sitting area was very pleasant but we were surrounded (literally) by all kinds of birds. I had two ducks by my side the whole time begging as though they were dogs – I won’t even mentioned the gazillion seagulls that were starring at our food longingly.

Once we caught the raft back to the “mainland”, we hopped onto the Liberty Belle Steamship where I got some great video shots – keep this in mind if you like to record during your vacation – got some shots I wouldn’t have otherwise had!

We weren’t too far away from the Haunted Mansion when we disembarked the Liberty Belle, so we just followed our ears to the howling noises. My parents opted out of this one, but the four of us went on. I think I already mentioned this is my favorite attraction in the Magic Kingdom although apparently my parents don’t care for it – go figure!

Next stop – Fantasyland, and apparently we weren’t the only ones with the idea! We found the crowds! Unfortunately since we were on a time schedule and didn’t have much time we pretty much just strolled through this area – most rides had at least a 20 minute wait. Guess we’ll have to hit this area tomorrow. We did get to do It’s a Small World (walk on – big surprise there) and the Teacups which we waited a couple minutes for. We also spent some time walking the paths that are around the Castle and browsing some of the shops. At Sir Mickey’s I found a stuffed Minnie Mouse that asked me to bring her home, and I just couldn’t bare to disappoint her. Thirty two dollars later I walked out the door with her. I had a lot of fun with her the next morning at Chef Mickey’s but I’ll get into that in tomorrow’s report! 

At this point it was time to head back to the resort to get ready for our night out and luckily didn’t have to wait too long for a bus. When we got back to the resort, I got a message that the personalized picture frame that I had ordered yesterday at MGM was at package pickup in the check in area at the resort (they no longer deliver to your room, at least at the All Star Movies.) However, upon getting it back to my room, I found that they had spelled my name wrong – I was not a happy camper. I did call WDW merchandising who assured me that they would have it corrected and it would be waiting for me the following afternoon. Ok fine.

Since I’d taken extra time taking care of that mess, we left later than I had planned on which meant the kids were a few minutes late for their 5:00 p.m. reservations at the Neverland Club. Luckily it wasn’t a problem (turned out we were only 10 – 15 minutes late at any rate.) Now, getting a bus from the Polynesian to Downtown Disney was an entirely different matter altogether. We waited 25 minutes for a bus!! I’d be a little ticked off if I had spent the extra money to stay here and had this type of bus service – maybe we were just unlucky that night? We never had problems like that at the ASMO even when we had to share with the other All Star resorts.

As I mentioned, 25 minutes later we were finally on the bus headed to Pleasure Island, but not before stopping at the Grand Floridian for guest pickup. I think all told, it took as about an hour to get to Pleasure Island after dropping the kids off. Well, that’s why their reservations were for 5:00 and not later.

We got off at the Pleasure Island bus stop since we were having dinner at Planet Hollywood. We had a card that we received at the PH store that gave us first available seating and free appetizer (although we would have been seated immediately anyway since there weren’t too many people there.) Our free appetizer was the crunchy chicken strips (can’t remember the exact name) but boy were they yummy! I could have had that for dinner and been perfectly happy. Liked that a lot better than what I did have for dinner although it’s my own fault. I ordered the beef fajitas thinking they were more along the lines of enchilladas, and was very disappointed. Before ordering, I had asked our waitress if the beef was ground beef and she thought I had said round beef and said yes it was. I don’t like steak, so wasn’t too happy when my order was brought out. Rob and parents all had the fried lasagne which was extremely good (Rob gave me a bite of his) so that made my dinner that much more disappointing – well, live and learn, I guess.

After dinner, we headed to Pleasure Island where we browsed a few shops before getting in line for the first Comedy Warehouse show of the night (had to see based on Sue Holland’s advice.) This was a good show but there were a few young kids in there (first row), so I think it may have been toned down a bit, based on other reports I have read. Still had a great time though! When they asked for your most embarrassing moment, much to my Mother’s chagrin, my Dad raised his hand and told them the story about the night my mother passed out in the middle of the night and fell into the kitty box. (Once in a while when she is under a good deal of stress, she passes out – was not because she was drunk!) Anyway, they made an awfully funny song about it and wished I had brought my video camera along. I would definitely like to come back and see a later show at some point. These guys are great! By the way, their Pina Coladas’ are pretty darn good, too!

Onto the Adventurer’s Club where both Rob and I order a Kungaloosh in a souvenier monkey head cup. This was our favorite club from the last time we had visited and wanted to make sure my parents got to check it out – didn’t disappoint this time either! We ended up staying for two of the shows, and my Dad was chosen as the sound effects man for the first show and had a good laugh at his expense. “Jump up for Jinkies – we love ‘em!”

We figured we’d mosey on after this since we had to leave shortly to pick the kids back up. I wanted to be back at the Poly no later than 11:30, so checked out the 70’s Club, as well as the Rock N Roll Beach Club then picked up a bus at the Pleasure Island bus stop.
Ok – are you ready for what we had to do to get the kids and then get back to our resort? Well, I’m gonna tell you anyway. LOL. As I mentioned, we took to bus from Pleasure Island to the Polynesian Resort, picked up the kids, took another bus to Pleasure Island from the Polynesian Resort (luckily this time we didn’t wait long), then picked up another bus to the ASMO Resort. Finally back “home” we all went to bed and slept good and hard that night – was a long (although wonderful) day!

Day 7 – January 31, 2001 – Dad’s Birthday!!!
Since last night was another late one, our wake up call wasn’t until 8:00 a.m. this morning, although I was up before then anyway. There was a beautiful robe I had seen at the Five and Dime in MGM Studios (same place I bought the picture frame) that I decided to get so MGM was our first stop of the day. It is white with raised Mickey heads that I had embroidered with Mickey and Minnie Mouse along with our wedding date on it to commemorate our 10th anniversary that we celebrated this past September. Mom had ordered one the day before and just had to have one when I saw hers. I could justify the cost since you can’t get it anywhere else – any excuse is a good excuse, right? Once I had that taken care of, we hopped a bus over to the Magic Kingdom, but not before stopping at every Caribbean Beach Resort bus stop. I can’t believe how huge this place is! Too big for my tastes, but otherwise looks like a nice place to stay. Anyway, once we finally made it to the Magic Kingdom, our first stop was Guest Relations to pick Dad up a birthday button so everyone knew it was his birthday. He’s a big kid at heart and loved the extra attention he got!

Since we still had the majority of Fantasyland to do, that is where we had intended to head first, however, when we went past the pin cart, Joey just had to make a stop, which was actually a lucky break. The Mayor of Main Street was there and informed us that they had released a surprise pin that morning that was limited to only 1000 – well we couldn’t pass up that opportunity, so each of us bought a couple. They are really cute too – it is the Wet Paint sign that they use in the parks with Donald and one of his nephews. We heard they were either sold out by the end of the day or first thing the following morning (not sure which is true) but glad we had to opportunity to pick some up.

Eventually we did make it to Fantasyland where we went on Peter Pan’s Flight, Cinderella’s Golden Carousel, Snow White’s Scary Adventure and Winnie the Pooh (I love this ride!!) For lunch we ate at Cosmic Ray’s and enjoyed entertainment from Sunny Eclipse. The kids and I had the corn dog nuggets and boy were those things good! The restaurant also had a great toppings bar including cheese sauce which I used for dipping my fries and sauteed mushrooms that I got just because. Rob got a steak and cheese sandwich while my Mom got chicken and biscuits that she said was really good. Think Dad just got a burger or something like that.

After lunch we did the Carousel of Progress, Astro Orbiter, Alien Encounter, Time Keeper, Splash Mountain (except for Dad and Rob), and got a Fast Pass for Space Mountain (the only time we needed to get one aside from Test Track.) While we waited for our Fast Pass time we walked around Mickey’s Toontown Fair and rode the Walt Disney World Railroad. When our time rolled around, we walked by a TON of people waiting for Space Mountain and walked right on ride. Boy didn’t that feel nice!

The rest of the afternoon was spent just walking around the park until around 6:30 when we headed towards our viewing spot for Fantasy in the Sky. We were going to watch from the bridge near Tomorrowland but saw an empty table at the Plaza Pavilion which was a welcome respite for our tired feet. The spot was pretty good but because our table was behind another table so our view of some of the fireworks was partially obstructed, although Tinkerbell flew directly above us – really cool! All in all it was a pretty good spot though. As usual before heading to the busses, we browsed the shops for a while until the crowds thinned out, and I found the best tshirt in the Emporium (one of my prized possessions from this trip!) Anyway, when they started closing up shop at the watch store, we took the subtle hint and made our way to the busses.

Once back at the resort, I went to package pickup to find that the corrected frame that I had ordered hadn’t come in yet. I was extremely upset since we only had a few more days before we had to leave, but the cast member assured me that she’d call the store directly to check on it. I still wasn’t too happy, but since the store had already closed for the evening, there wasn’t much I could do. It better be there tomorrow, though!

From there we headed to World Premier for dinner – I got the lo mein, eggroll and brownie (yum), Derek got a side salad and brownie, Joey got a peanut butter and jelly kids meal and my parents got individual pizzas. Rob didn’t eat.

The Fantasia pool was finally open tonight after being closed due to a malfunctioning heater, so I let Joey swim until 10:00 while I watched him from one of the pool chairs. Derek isn’t a big fan of water, so he just walked around the Fantasia area. Since I wanted to give Joey the chance to dry off a bit, we walked around for a bit afterwards as well and found the hammock by Daisy Duck. How can you resist an empty hammock hanging between two palm trees? We couldn’t either, and it was a great way to spend a few minutes while we waited for Joey to dry off. Another moment I imagine we’ll remember long after the trip is over.

Soon after we were back to our room and lights were shut off by 11:00. Do I really I have to leave in two days???

Day 8 – February 1, 2001
Wake up was at 6:30 a.m. so we could make our 8:45 a.m. priority seating reservations for Chef Mickey’s. Since we had to take the bus over to the Magic Kingdom and then a monorail over to the Contemporary I wanted to allow plenty of time.

After having our picture taken we were seated and went right up to the buffet. All kinds of yummy things – some typical, some not but everything was delicious. Chip came around almost immediately which was right before the napkin twirling celebration so we didn’t get much time with him (luckily he came back around.) Since it was Dad’s birthday yesterday, they brought him out a cupcake with candle. Thankfully I got everything on video!

During our breakfast we also saw Dale, Pluto, Goofy, Mickey and Minnie Mouse. I had brought that stuffed Minnie who asked me to buy her yesterday and instead of having the characters sign an autograph book, I had them sign her bloomers – boy didn’t that cause a few chuckles and the characters had a lot of fun with it too! This was the most expensive breakfast that we’d even had (especially since the cost of the picture and magnet were included in the cost) but I would do it again in a heartbeat. Food was great and character interaction couldn’t have been better. We had gone to the Crystal Palace our last vacation, and even though we had a great meal and wonderful time, it just can’t compare to Chef Mickey’s – I think we’ll try the dinner next time though just for something new.

Once we said bye to Chef Mickey and the gang, we took the monorail to the TTC and then took another one to Epcot. I just love the monorail system – just wish the whole resort area was connected. “Please stand clear of the doors . . .”

Anyway, we headed straight towards the Wonders of Life Pavilion where we did Body Wars, Cranium Command and spent some time with the exhibits before heading to Ellen’s Energy Adventure where I’m embarrassed to admit that I actually fell asleep. I guess the pace we’re keeping finally caught up with me – I should say “us” though because I wasn’t the only one to catch a few zzzzz’s. Don’t get me wrong – I actually do like this attraction, but it was just so conducive for sleeping!  Thank goodness there was a coffee cart close to the exit – guess we’re not the only ones with this problem! LOL

Once we were properly caffeinated, I mentioned to Rob that I wanted to hit Downtown Disney one more time, so suggested that we head there after Illuminations R.O.E. tonight. Rob was keen on the idea but I could tell my parents were a little disappointed as they thought that was a great idea but didn’t think they’d be able to handle another late night since tomorrow was another travel day. Someone (can’t remember who) mentioned that now might be a good idea to go since we had seen just about everything in Epcot that we had really wanted to see, and then come back for TON and IROE (getting lazy with my typing), which is what we decided to do. We decided to get there by walking through the International Gateway and catch a bus at the Yacht Club. I absolutely love this resort and if I had the extra money and time would definitely stay there. I say time because if I spent the additional money, I would want to spend more time at the resort. Maybe when Rob and I can finally go by ourselves . . .

Once in Downtown Disney we spent some time in the 2R’s Reading and Riting (yes – the name of the store is actually spelled that way) then spent a good hour or more in the World of Disney where I bought a snowglobe that I had my eye on. It’s Tinkerbell inside a jewelry box that holds a small picture and plays “You Can Fly” when you open up the little drawer. It is just sooo cute! I also picked up an Eeyore picture holder and a Minnie Mouse picture holder – the latter for a girl that I work with back home.

After spending all of our money (hehehe) we let the kids browse through the Lego store for a bit before heading back to the resort to unload our purchases and to see if my robe and frame were waiting for me. Thankfully they were and both came out great – that’s a relief! Dad was hungry at this point so we headed to the World Premier where he had a chili dog, Derek had macaroni salad and chips while Joey had another PB&J kids meal. The rest of us weren’t hungry so didn’t eat.

Back to Epcot we go where we made a quick stop at our locker, then towards Ice Station Cool for some foreign refreshments. We went there a few nights ago and the kids tricked their grandparents into trying Beverly. Can you believe my hubby actually doesn’t think it’s all that bad? Well, he also likes Moxie, so his tastes are questionable.

It was now time to scope out our viewing spot in Mexico for TON and Illuminations – ROE, but not before getting some more churros. Man are those things good. Very similar to fried dough actually, but much easier to eat.

Tapestry was again wonderful and has become a new favorite for us. I can’t believe I didn’t have much interest in seeing this before our trip. It’s really neat because you really are a part of the parade. Illuminations – Reflections of Earth actually made me cry this time. Words just can’t describe this nighttime show so I won’t try, but if you are visiting while this is still going on, make a point to see it. You won’t be disappointed. Oh and don’t worry when you see the fireballs – it’s suppose to be there! 

It was right around now that it really hit home that we had to leave to go back home tomorrow. Joey and I both cried – it’s really hard telling him not to when here I am choking up. It has been such a wonderful vacation through and through – weather was great, crowds weren’t bad at all, and was even more special since my parents went with us this time. They really had a great time too, but they are not likely to come back – at least not for 10 years or so. I couldn’t handle it! I’d get withdrawals! Thankfully we’ll be coming back shortly and as the commercials say, looking forward to a Disney vacation is almost as good as getting there.

After spending some time in Mouse Gears to pick up the Millennium CD (couldn’t go home without it since we had already picked up Fantasmic!, the Haunted Mansion 30th Anniversary and of course the official Walt Disney World CD’s), we headed back to our resort. This would be our last day of Epcot for this trip.  Since it was so late by the time we got back, we jumped right into bed, also ending our last full day of Disney for this trip.

Day 9 – February 2, 2001
Boohoo – Mickey woke us up at 6:10 a.m. today to make sure we were out of our room early so we could get some park time in before our limo arrives to pick us up at 2:15. The park we chose to go to was the Magic Kingdom since that park is our favorite. We had no goals – just wanted to go back to “small the roses” before we had to leave.

Since we didn’t know if we’d have time for lunch or dinner, we got big breakfasts at World Premier, which was really good and fairly inexpensive. It included eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, biscuit, and coffee – very yummy!

We found ourselves in the park around 9:00/9:30 or so and spent some time on Main Street, did Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion and the Liberty Belle Steamship one more time. Also took a spin on the TTA just because. Weather was cloudy, misty and cool. The park was extremely crowded that day as well, which may partially been caused by the upcoming cheerleader championships that were this weekend – there were teenaged girls everywhere! I guess if we really had to leave, we had picked a good day.

Before heading back to the resort for the last time, we stopped at the Main Street Bake Shop and each enjoyed a very yummy Tollhouse Cookie while we immersed ourselves in the magic of the Magic Kingdom. I could have held onto those few moments forever. Finally after swallowing the last bit of cookie as well as the lumps in our throats, we headed back to the resort.

Our limo arrived a few minutes early at 2:00 to whisk us away from our fairytale and back to reality. Luckily the story will be continued in the not too distant future . . .

Although our flight was cancelled (back to reality, right?) we had no problem getting onto another flight which left only 30 minutes after our originally scheduled flight. Unfortunately we had to transfer in Philadelphia (our other flight was direct), but again had no problems aside from the fact that we had to rush from one plane to another. The second plane was also extremely small and I had a kid kicking the back of my seat for the entire time, but thankfully we were only on it for 50 minutes and got back safe and sound. Our limo driver was waiting for us at Logan, and we arrived back home around 10:00. Was sad to leave Disney, but also nice to be home.

Final Thoughts On. . .

Crowds
As I mentioned, crowds in the parks, luckily, weren’t bad at all until the day we left when there were cheerleaders everywhere. Almost all ride wait times were either non existent or less than a 10 minute wait. The few exceptions were Test Track with a 40 minute wait, and not worth it if you ask me – take advantage of Fast Pass on this one! If we had waited for Space Mountain on Wednesday, it would have been a good half hour plus wait, but with Fast Pass we walked right on. The odd thing was that we walked right onto this ride the first day we were there. Fantasyland was always the busiest, but still manageable. Crowds at the All Star Movies were another thing (read on. . .)

Weather
The first day we were there was sunny, but temps were in the low 60’s and it was windy making it feel a bit chilly. I actually wished that I had worn my winter jacket into the park that day, especially that night.

The next day turned out to be sunny and pleasant although still a bit on the cooler side. The days after that were warm and mostly sunny. I was able to wear a tshirt and shorts for two of the days and boy wasn’t that a nice feeling! The last couple of days were overcast – Thursday was a little misty in the morning when we headed for Chef Mickey’s but stayed dry the rest of the day. Friday as I previously mentioned was misty and cool and by the time our plane left, it was actually raining, which made it slightly easier to leave.

All in all, we had great weather. We didn’t pack our ponchos this trip (they were still packed in our camper from a very wet camping trip last July) and that’s probably why it stayed dry while we were there! LOL

Resort (All Star Movies)
I absolutely love this resort and has the best theming of all the Disney resorts, in my opinion. We had made several requests as I previously mentioned and pretty much received what we had asked for. The view from our particular room was very nice since it overlooked the pool, but again was probably noisier than some of the other rooms here.
Our particular building (Fantasia 2000) was right near the World Premier foodcourt as well as the bus stops. I think the next time we stay I would like to try either Andy’s Room or 101 Dalmations since we don’t have to worry about getting a smoking room (only a few buildings allow smoking.)

The food court area was always a zoo when we walked through although Rob said it wasn’t too bad when he went to go get coffee before 6:30 a.m. The food court is quite large and very noisy. Selections were really good and prices weren’t unreasonalbe though and food was more than adequate. Definitely take advantage of their refillable mug program irregardless of where you stay. The up front cost is ghastly, but you’ll save money in the long run if you get coffee every morning and drink sodas with your meals in the foodcourt. Keep in mind that juice and milk are not included in this program.

Room size is the same as the other All Star Resorts and we found them to be adequate considering we just slept in them and that’s about it. For $66 including tax (got an annual passholder’s discount), we got quite a bit of bang for our buck, and will definitely return to this resort.

Limo’s
We used Happy Limo as transport to and from CRO – since there were 6 of us with tons of luggage, we had to use the 10 passenger limo which actually saved us money over Mears. Make sure you check your alternatives before making a decision on airport transfers – you might get a better mode for your money. Happy Limo was there on time both ends of the vacation and cars were very clean and spacious. I highly recommend them. We used Florida Towncar for our previous trip and they were equally as good.


Well I hope I didn’t bore you with all the senseless details, but this was more a record for me and my family more than anything else. I have read many trip reports from other Disney fanatics like myself and learned more from those than any other source, so hopefully I was able to help someone as well. If you will be enjoying a Disney vacation in the near future, I hope yours is as magical as ours was. If you’re not currently planning one, WELL WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?????

It sounds like you had a nice blend of "biggie attractions", "great eats", and relaxing "magical moments". Good job with your planning, and writeup. by the way, I think I gained 5lbs just reading your write up of what you ate each day! YIKES that sounds good (you can tell I am on a diet huh?!).
