Cast of Characters

Me (41) Dis Board Junkie who would rather spend time planning trip than cooking dinner.

DH (41) Funder of trip and generous earner of frequent flier miles to get us there…appreciates all the Disney planning, not so thrilled with the no dinners thing.

DS (10) Thrill-Seeker…very excited to be going to the “World”. Been twice to Disneyland and loves any ride that goes fast, high or upside-down.

DS (8) Drama King…charming child who loves meeting the characters, thinks he’s a thrill-seeker (but is still a little frightened of upside-down) and may blow a gasket at any time. Been to Disneyland once.

DS (4) Binky Boy…Happy to be going anywhere the family goes, as long as he’s with Mom. Still needs a binky at night, but will assail brothers with full blows when provoked. Also been to DL once.

Trip Dates: 1/7/05 – 1/15/05

Friday, January 7th…it’s finally here! For once, we are not getting up at the crack of dawn to catch a flight. We are scheduled to leave Seattle at 1pm. It’s so much nicer the night before to know you don’t have to worry about oversleeping! By 10:15, we were loaded into our van…Family of 5, six bags to be checked, a backpack for each child, carryon and purse for myself, portable DVD player and the family cat and her accompaniments (food and newly cleaned litter box) to be dropped off at in-laws for her own personal kitty vacation. We drop cat and paraphernalia off and pick up grandparents who are driving us to the airport. They are excited for us, and, as always, a little worried about long flights, getting separated, terrorism…anything that could go wrong. But they give us all a warm hug good-bye and some money for each of the boys. We check right in and get all the way out to our departure gate and we’ve got well over an hour before boarding begins.

Planning ahead as I did, I had learned that Delta was not serving any food on our 4 ½ hour flight unless you wanted to purchase it. As the first and last budget move of the trip, I had made lunches for us to eat before we boarded. We were almost the first people at our gate, so we had our pick of seats. The boys settled down with their Gameboys and, much to our delight, DH and I see a bar right nearby where we can sit and watch the boys and also order a celebratory pre-flight beer! (We are aware that it was only 11:30 in the morning, but it was the start of our vacation and I’m a nervous flier.) We even brought our own sandwiches over to our table and ate them with our second beer. Finally, everyone had eaten and it was time to board. We left on time and arrived in Atlanta exactly on time with about 2 ½ hours until our flight to Orlando. We ate dinner in the airport and proceeded to our gate to wait. After we had settled down and been there for about ½ hour, I noticed the board at our gate said Aero Mexico, not Delta Airlines. DH got up to check it out and turns out we are at the wrong gate in the wrong terminal! Although we still had plenty of time, I’m a little rattled as we gather up our things and make our way to the tram to take us to another section of the airport. This is where we suffer our first lost article of the trip. Drama King has insisted on carrying his sweatshirt instead of wearing it. When we get in the tram, all three boys insist on riding in the very front, next to the glass (pretending it’s a Disney ride) and cavorting around. We arrive and get to our next gate sans sweatshirt, which we don’t notice ‘till we’re seated on the plane. Prior to getting on the plane, however, we still have a little time to wait, so we get a little Ben& Jerry’s for dessert. Binky Boy gets a little Ben & Jerry’s for his sweat suit! About this time, we see a family seated across from us with three kids. The youngest is wearing a shirt, diaper and shoes, but no pants. It’s not long before we realize he’s probably not wearing pants because he had thrown up on them. He continues to throw up into a plastic bag until our boarding call comes and we come to the further realization that they are also on our flight! As soon as we are all seated, I whip out my bottle of hand sanitizer for all 5 of us. I have lived in fear of anyone getting sick prior to or during this vacation, so I’m prepared to battle against it every step of the way. As I’m finally relaxing, I discover that I left my soft, cushy pink travel pillow in the seats across from the vomiter. 2nd lost article of the trip.

Arrive in Orlando on time and get our luggage out to the curb to wait for our hotel shuttle. None of us can believe how warm it is. It snowed in Seattle the day before we left and now we’re here (at 1 am mind you) and we are peeling off sweatshirts and marveling at the temp. Of course we had just missed the shuttle, so have to wait 20 min. for another. Finally arrive at the Embassy Suites next to the airport and check in. Haul boys and bags to the top floor, find our room and the key doesn’t work, so DH and Drama King go back to the lobby to get it fixed and come up 10 min later with new key. Still does not work and this time, we hear a voice from inside the room saying they had been given this room, even though there was welcoming info on the table with our names on it! We feel so bad for these people…remember it’s now about 2 am. DH and DK again go downstairs and after another long 10 min…DH signals to me to come down (with 2 boys and six bags plus backpacks and carryons). He was given a different room to try and had gotten in only to find somebody else’s luggage everywhere…that room too was occupied! Major screw-ups all around and I’m just trying to keep the kids quiet, since everyone else was trying to get a good night’s sleep. Finally, they give us two king rooms next door to each other (but not connecting) since they didn’t have any more rooms with two queen beds in them. DK and DH take one room and I go with Thrill-Seeker and Binky Boy to the other one. We are finally all settled in for the night and it’s 2:30 am. Since it’s only 11:30 West Coast time, I’m still kind of awake, so I pop on the TV and see my first viewing of Krissa and her top 7 Things to Do at WDW. Despite the room screw-up and things that had already gotten lost in only one day, I was very happy and excited for the next day.

More tomorrow…

Sorry to hear about the mix ups with your room - but you are here and ready to start your adventures - thanks for posting!

We were at WDW that same day! :) Yes, the weather was WONDERFUL!

I'm looking forward to your next installment. :)

Keep the reports coming! How did your little one handle the plane ride? We're going in May and my DD (4) has never been on a plane, let alone that long. Just curious to know how you handled it.

Keeping the boys busy on the plane has not been that difficult for us. They are all really into their Gameboys, so that will kill two hours easy (maybe more). We also bring a portable DVD player and headphones. For some reason, on this trip, they had a hard time hearing it, but in the past it's worked fine. Before we bought our own DVD player, we rented one at the "In-Motion" kiosk in the airport. Most major cities have them and they are awesome. Little guy will still play with Matchbox cars, so we put some of those in his backpack (new ones he can open). Sometimes I have purchased a small lego kit to put together. I realize these are all "boy" type" things, so your daughter may have different interests...Polly Pockets maybe? Good luck!

That's awful to hear about the room screw ups! I hope nobody was in the room that you walked into! ;)

That's horrible about the screw up. After the second room I'd be pretty upset. Sounds like the airport wasn't too bad. Can't wait to read more!

I can't believe the room mix up. Did you have to pay for the extra room?

Enjoying your reports!

No, not at all...in fact they would have comped us our room that night for all the trouble, but they weren't sure how to do it since we were using a free night already from our bonus points!

The hotel mess up has happened to me, too. I used to travel a lot with my job and I walked in on some man at the Hilton in Wichita, KS. Luckily, he was "pretty much" dressed. By the time I got to the desk, he had called the desk, wanting to know what and who the heck I was/doing. Thank heavens, now that they have the electronic keys.

Thanks for another fun installment.

Sharon
