There have been several questions about purchasing travel insurance and I thought I would tell you of our experience.
Setting the stage:
Our vacation was scheduled for Feb 16th - Feb 23rd (President's week). We had reserved a studio at BWV. Since we live in Proctor MN (near Duluth) and the weather tends wintery in Feb, we purchased travel insurance.
Our flight was scheduled to leave Duluth at 4:45 PM and arrive in Orlando at 9:45 PM. We had a connecting flight in Chicago.
Due to an air traffic controller delay at O'hare, our flight was delayed in leaving Duluth by 1:15. This, of course, caused us to miss our connecting flight. American got us on a flight the next morning at 6:50 AM, but we were required to stay overnight in Chicago (on our dime).
We filed a claim with the insurance company and we were reimbursed for our room and dining expense, after having to contact the airline and get a "written excuse" for what had delay the flight. Since the delay was "carrier based", we were not reimbursed for the lost DVC points (32).
I was pleased with the ease of filing the claim and the speed at which we did get reimbursed. You do need to make sure you have documentation of everything including the fact you paid for your vacation.
Lessons learned:
We got lucky we got paid anything. The insurance company only pays if you are delayed more the 12 hours (we were delayed 12:05).
Unless you have a medical emergency, you will end up losing your points.
Would I do it again?
It worked this time, but I really doubt I will purchase this travel insurance again. The fact you must be delayed 12 hours sucks! If our flight the next morning had been scheduled 10 minutes early, we wouldn't have seen a nickel.
Sorry for the length of the message!
