Just got back from our first trip to WDW and my oldest son wanted to see the Luau at the Polynesian hotel. The only reservation I could get was last Tuesday night. Yep, you guessed it, the final of Amazing Race. Now we are die-hard fans and have watched every episode since the 2nd race.
I don't realize it until we get to WDW that the luau is the same night and we cannot get any other reservation. So, we go to the luau at 8pm and ask when it will be over, answer, 10:15.
OK, major planning and decision making here. We are staying at the Wilderness Lodge and the only way to get there fast (not the bus) is either the big boat from the Magic Kingdom or the little boat from the Contemporary. Oh dear, which is faster? Where is the boat dock at the Contemporary? How often does the little boat come there?
BUT, when do the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom end? Are we going to run into the traffic there if we choose the big boat? ARGH! OK, find out the fireworks get over at 10, bad news....
OK, here is the plan: We leave the luau a little early, go to the Contemporary on the monorail, find the dock and hop the little boat, bypassing the big crowd at the fireworks.
ON WITH THE RACE: We leave the luau at the Poly 20 minutes early at 9:55, get to the monorail station at the Poly (which has to be the farthest point from the luau but still at the same hotel) and the monorail guy informs us that the boat from the Contemporary stops running at 10.....AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! OK, jump on the monorail and get to the Magic Kingdom, fireworks still going, whew, and OMG, there is a big boat at the pier! No way we are going to make it.
Run to the pier yelling please wait! Jump on the boat just as the fireworks finale starts and the boat takes off. We get to the Lodge, run the mile across the property and get to our room just in time to see the last 30 minutes. We all then collapse and spend the rest of the show trying to recover.
So there you have it, our amazing race to SEE Amazing Race....how crazy are we?
