I am going to move this to our Canadian Trip Planning Board. You might also want to take a look at our Transportation board. :)

There are several issues that you may want to consider. How old are the kids in your family?

If the Thousand Islands Bridge border wait time is greater than 10 minutes, you will save time by crossing at the quieter Prescott / Ogdensburg bridge. The only sacrifice is that you must drive on a slower highway between Ogdensburg and I-81 (40 miles / 64 km).

When driving around dawn or dusk, be especially watchful for deer, especially on I-81 through Syracuse-Binghamton-Scranton. Of course this will depend on the time of year. One spring we saw hundreds of deer, licking salt and grazing along the side of the highway.

Traffic can be very thick around Washington, DC. It's much worse than Toronto. Consider planning a route west of the city.

I highly recommend a detour to Hershey, Pennsylvania (http://www.hersheys.com/discover/visit.asp). Chocolate world is free and open year-round. If you have a roller coaster addition, and you're there during operating season, Hersheypark is one of the best amusement parks in the Northeast. If you're visiting around Halloween (or book an after-hours tour), Zoo America has a great nocturnal animal exhibit. Hershey also has a significant number of nice hotels and outlet shopping. And of course, everything downwind of the factory smells like chocolate. :)

I can't recommend specific hotels along the route. My own experiences were hit-and-miss. Good luck!

We have driven down before, and we are driving again next month. We prefer the I-81, 77, 26, 95, 4 route. You miss DC and you don't have as many transports. When we have all the kids we take 2 nights, arriving early on the 3rd day. When we only have some kids, like our next trip, we only spend 1 night on the road. We leave by 2am, and have breakfast somewhere in PA. It also depends whether you are driving in winter or summer.
If you could give us more details, that would help.;)

I did the Prescott bridge once, and the drive down from Ogdensburg to Watertown seemed to take forever on those small, little highways! From now on, I always use the Thousand Islands bridge...I'd only consider Prescott if the wait times for the Thousand Islands bridge were 1 hr+.

Interesting experience. The longest it ever took us to drive that 40 mile / 64 km stretch was 1h 15min. School bus traffic plus lots of lights. Nothing stressful. In fact, it was a relaxing way to start our trip. We made that drive 3-4 times each year between 2000 and 2006 (not to WDW, but to Buffalo, Rochester, Cleveland, Allentown, Hershey, Trenton, NYC, Washington... anywhere with roller coasters).

During that same period (2000 to 2006), we got stuck in obscene border traffic 3 times at the Thousand Islands Bridge entering the US -- once it was backed up almost to the 401 and took over 2 hours to cross. That was an extremely frustrating way to start a vacation. After that, I would only willingly cross there if it was late at night.

FYI, for those of you who enjoy a little cross-border shopping, I recommend returning via the Thousand Islands Bridge on a hot summer day, just after sundown. The bugs are so fierce, the Canadian customs officials don't want to open their booth window any longer than absolutely necessary. Two questions and off you go! ;)

We're from Ottawa and made our 1st drive down last fall (family of 6). We took the 416 straight to the Bridge Crossing at Ogdensburg. We had GPS, MapQuest AND CAA Trip Tik. We relyed mostly on that Trip TIK from CAA even when our GPS wanted us to travel down a dirt road (I demanded DH turn around and follow the CAA Map in the Trip TIK). Somewhere in the Syracuse area, there was a hairpin curve in the highway, on the way down, so be sure to watch the road signs.

Someone had suggested to us to use the Pennsylvania Turnpike (it's a toll road), but this person claimed it saved 1/2 hour of time, so we did that. We travelled down over 2 days, driving 13 hours the first day. Going through West Virginia? the 1st night, we did have issues with deer. You see dead dear along the sides of the roads down there like you see dead Groundhogs along our highways, but with deer being bigger, it was Horrible. At one point just after dusk, a doe jumped into our path from the left of the highway, DH swerved to miss her and did by just mere inches. THANK goodness there were no other cars around us at the time. Our hearts were in our throats and then 20 minutes later, two Wild? Dogs, one chasing the other, bounded across the highway in front of us. DH slammed on the brakes. At that point, we decided to just find a place and stop for the night.

We had left at 8:30 in the morning our 1st day of driving (later than was originally planned), and had a FULL tank of gas. (We drive a Ford Freestar).
We stopped for lunch at a CrackerBarrell in Binghampton. It was great, had never been before, but I wouldn't do it again on the way down, as it ate up a good portion of our time.
In Hershey PA, we had to stop for gas, we were running on empty. Filled our tank for $60.00 USD!!!!
We stopped for the night at a DAYS INN in Fredericksberg Virginia.

I recommend stopping at the welcome centres in the states you end up being in when you are getting close to stopping for the night. They have room saver catalouges (you can also get them online) with coupons for good deals on rooms. At the days in, we had a coupon that got us a room for $ 47.95 for the night. The hotel itself was pretty ok, not 5 star by any means, but CLEAN, and thats what mattered to us. We just wanted a place to sleep and feel safe.
Don't know how you feel about it, but had I checked us into the hotel, I would have just said my husband and I and our children. DH mentioned we had 4 children, and the attendant insisted we had to take two rooms then. But he ended up giving is the same rate for the second room. We really could have done without that. I had checked with other hotels in Florida prior to leaving, about our being a family of 6 and most said, they would rent us a cot, and WOULD let us have just ONE room not two. So you might not want to say how many children you have, it's up to you, (at least in the hotel you eventually stop at on your way down).

DAY 2, again we left later than planned, but did make it to Orlando between 9 and 10 that night. Had a few days in a hotel off property and then were at our WDW Resort for the remainder of our Stay.

OH, yes, avoid the DC area. Our Trip Tik rerouted us around it, but basically we took the 81 to the 95.

Do try to time your drive (as we had tried to plan), so that you aren't travelling too much in the dark. We had wanted to leave between 5 and 6 am both days of travelling, and go for about 12 hours each day. As it was, we spent a lot of time both evenings driving in the dark. Next time, this fall actually, we will leave earlier. I'd LOVE to enter FL in the daylight this time!

I totally agree. We have driven numerous times over the last 15+ years and we used to always take the 81-66-17-95-4 route as recommended by CAA in their triptiks. However, over the years, the volume of traffic has increased dramatically on I95, especially between Fredericksburg, VA and Richmond.

We have taken the 81-77-26-95-4 route a few times now and it is so much more scenic and relaxing... more so when travelling with our 5th wheel trailer . The traffic volume was non-existant compared to I95 and the route takes you through the Blue Ridge Moutains in Virginia and North Carolina.

For March Break, we took the Washington route down, as we were driving through there around 2:00 a.m., and the 81-77-26-95-4 route back. Even though the Washington route was about 40 minutes shorter according to yahoo maps, the difference in driving time amounted to only 5 minutes, which I'm guessing was because of the heavier traffic on I95.

So, to sum it up... I'm a fan of the 81-77-26-95-4 route. :goodvibes
