We just had another training session on voip at work today (I dispatch for the fire dept) and we got a link to a great web-site that outlines the things to consider when you are researching voip. Please read this and understand what you are getting into.

If anyone has any questions on it from the 911 perspective, please feel free to ask and I'll answer as best I can. It's great technology, but it's also a "buyer beware" situation and most of the liability will rest with you the consumer, so make sure you know exactly how it will work if you have an emergency and need to call 911.

Great page, thanks!

I'm in law enforcement, but I've been wondering about voip and 911. A friend has made the switch. He's with Vonage, and apparently his 911 call would be routed to a call centre in NY state. They then have a master list of emergency services, complied from the survey filled in by all new voip clients.

I notice on the voip 911 page they recommend keeping your traditional land line. My whole reason for thinking about voip is to get away from the big monopoly. :badpc:

My husband is a 911/Communicator and just finished training on it.

I've saved the page so he can look at it.
