I was just trying to copy some of my old Disney VHS tapes that I have in clamshell to a dvd via dvd recorder but everytime I hit record its stops automatically and says copy protected and doesnt let me do it. Does anyone know how I can get around that, I would like to be able to take them on the road on the portable player but I cant seem to get them on DVD, is there a hole I shoul dtry covering or some other way to do this. I cant imagine its illegal cuz im not trying to sell them so please if thats what your going to say dont post. I want this for my own use. Anybody run into this problem??

There is no way around getting them copied, We tried, it wouldn't work

I'm in the same boat. I have been happily transferring all of my old VHS to DVD (which to my understanding is legal for ones own use) and I get to my Disney tapes and I can't do it. Some of these tapes have to be 15 years old. I didn't even know they could do that 15 years ago. I tried covering every hole on the tape and even opened one up to see if I could find something inside. No Luck. I did a search on google and found a device that will allow it to copy and it specifically mentions Disney VHS. It was around $70. I didn't think it was worth it.

Good gosh!!! I cant imagine it was that hard, its a little upsetting cuz now i have a TON of old disney vhs that have never been released on dvd like disney xmas gift and other gold editions, i wonder if i could copy them onto another vhs and then onto the dvd recorder, may have to try that....that seems a little steep for a gizmo to copy stuff, if it was a little less i would jsut do it cuz its worth it to me at least....sigh :(

Our Disney VHS tapes are basically the only videos we still own. It is frustrating because they take up so much blasted room! But I won't let DH talk me into getting rid of them :teeth: It was an obsession of mine to buy everyone when it was released so we have a ton. My obsession isn't nearly so great anymore but we do have a lot of Disney movies  :cloud9:

I tried that a few years ago and the "new" version came out all distorted.

I do this to my DVD's so the original copys don't get scratch. The way kids are always trying to grab them off the shelf. I have the darnest time with copying the Disney DVD's. I did quite a bit of research as long as you own the DVD/VHS and don't intend to sell you are within your rights to make a copy for backup. I wish there was some way to get around all the encryption so make a copy. I would even buy a tool to let me scan a code or pay a couple dollars more to let me copy it.

I think if Disney would have a replacement policy. I know Microsoft does if I lose my disks. With them I pay a replacement fee as long as they still support that software I can get it.

Yeah I know i'm within my rights but they are not letting you which stinks, i am thinking of buying one of those $60 gizmos to do it , i know you wil say just buy when they come out of vault but the thing like i said i have a lot of older disney that i cant even seem to find origianl vhs anywhere to reference and for sure no dvd, they are some of my childhood classics, so oh well, maybe the godvd people are in it with disney, i dont have that problem on any other vhs's. :( thanks all for the replies,

There is nothing physically preventing the tape from being copied. There is a code on the tape itself that the dvd recorder recognizes and won't allow it to be copied.
