We are planning on taking our 9 month old dachshund to Tennessee for Christmas, but I'm not sure what is needed when crossing the border. We are driving. She is up to date on all her shots. Thanks for the help! Deb

In case you're asked, make sure you have the vaccination certificate signed by the vet, including a description of your pet... you know, color, age, breed. The only vaccination they're interested in at the border is rabies... but if you might use a kennel anywhere on your trip, they will want to see that all the vaccinations are up to date, including bordetella.

Oh, and I'm not sure if the dog food ban has been lifted! Anything with meat was taboo, including doggie kibble. Anybody know about this?

I agree with the last poster - all documentation showing things are up to date. We own a purebred and we always brought our ownership/registration docs too - not sure why, we just like to have all the bases covered.

As far as I know, the ban is still on meat including dry dog food. Supposedly if you have an unopened package of dog food made in the US they will allow that back in. As of last winter the border folks were inspecting and confiscating if need be. Both my parents and inlaws go south for winter and confirm inspection. My Mom forgot about the dog cookies and they were taken. Her vet had an American version of their brand of dog food available and she had no problems with it at the border.

You could always check online for US Border regulations or Food and Drug regulations for the border to be sure on the up to date data. Here;s a link to help:

I have crossed the border many times with my dogs and have never had any documents to show that they have had there shots. I know that I have been really lucky and I should stop pushing my luck. Have a safe and happy trip.

I'd love to take my dog to WDW. We have never left her over night thou. S

We took our dog once and had all the documentation from the vet proving the shots are up to date. We also got a specific certificate and "dog tag" for her certifying that she had gotten her proper rabies vaccinations.

Thanks for the info. We were planning on taking her food. IAMS. She is a very picky eater, but not a big eater, so we only need a small amount. Deb
