Yesterday morning I notice my 16 month old had a VERY red and sore bottom area ( if you know what I mean). It was sort of ***** and gross ( not to be too graphic) and so I thought it was diaper rash infection. By the afternoon called the pediatrician and they were booked solid. I just didn't like the look of this "rash", so I called again later to beg for an appointment. Well they caved, took the poor little guy in, and they took one look and did a strep test. Turns out it is BUTT STREP!!!

I have never heard of such a thing before! It kind of freaked me out and I was wondering if anyone else have this happen to their child or heard of it before?

Also... He has liquid Amoxaccilin to take and he spits it out and gags! Any suggestions on giving meds effectively to a toddler I would also apprecciate it:)

So sorry your little your little guy is not feeling well. I would call the pharmacy and see if they have the flavorings that they can add to the liquid medication to make it "taste better". Our pharmacy has grape, bubble gum, cherry, orange etc. It usually cost a few extra $. It may help with getting your son to take the medicine. If not another suggestion is to get a syrnge type medince measure that you can put in the back of him mouth and squirt them medicine in. Since it is closer to the back he will not taste as much and is more likely to swallow the medicine. Good luck-hope he is feeling better soon.

Strep pyogenes causes cellulitus and impetigo, both can be associated with diaper rashes in sever cases. Just keep your kiddo clean and dry and good luck with getting the antibiotics down!

DD will not take her antibiotic when she is sick, even if it's flavored. We basically have to pinch her cheeks so she looks like a fish and force it down. She is never happy. You can try that.

Would they give him a shot instead?

Sorry he has...booty strep. :rotfl: that's funny to type out. ;)

If he does not take the meds the dr will probably have tell you to go to the hospital and they will give him meds intravenously. As Sharky mentioned, strep and staph are bacterial infections and they can turn to cellulitis which can be serious.

My DD16 was just in the ER for I.V. antibiotics for cellulitis (blister on back of her heel was the open wound this bacteria entered thru). Her dr put her on Bactrim when I brought her to the office, but it didn't respond to this and had to be put on Keflex by I.V, then sent home with an oral prescription. These infections can spread very quickly.

I hope your little guy feels better soon, poor baby.

OMG... I didn't know it could turn into something more serious! I do use the dropper to administer the medication, but he still manages to spit most of it out. It comes strawberry flavored but it's still yucky to the kid who will eat almost anything! I will have to call his DR if he doesn't get it down by the weekend! Thanks all and I will keep serious watch on him. Poor thing also has a cold too. I just feel so bad!

Ugh, I have been fighting this for months and I have a six year old. They thought it was staph at first (and here is where I start freaking out) and give us antibiotics which do nothing. Then they decide it is strep and we new antibiotics. Then it goes away and comes back. Three courses of antibiotics later I *think* it is finally gone. Our doctor recommended we add a half cup of bleach to her bath (which I am not sure about with a baby) and we got a prescription for bactroban cream along the way. I would definitely call about the cream because it has helped a lot. Do your very best to get the antibiotics into him and finish them completely. If they give you the cream, use it twice a day for two weeks after your finish the antibiotics. It is very hard to get rid of and to keep away. My daughter has scars on her bottom and one on her face (where it spread) but we are still applying the cream and the doctor said they will eventually fade away. Sorry for the bad news!

I'm sorry if I scared you. Just going thru this so recently, I wanted to share what I had just learned about strep infections. I'm sure you'll be watching him closely.

Before going through hoops to try to get more down him, call the pharmacist to make sure they didn't account for spitting it out when dosing.

Keep things nice and dry, no cremes, give him nakey butt time.

This will sound mean, but it is effective. Hold him down on his back, hold his nose, and use the oral syringe to get the medicine as far back in his mouth as possible. He will have to swallow to breathe.

If you're not using it already, can I suggest Mederma for Kids? DS was in a spica cast last year and when it finally came off he had a spot on one of his legs (they exact spot he complained was 'owee' when the cast was on) where the skin had become so irritated it actually scarred. We followed the directions (did take longer to see results because it was considered and old scar), but the mark really faded. We can see it a bit, but we know where to look...if you weren't looking for it, you'd never see the scar.

Look around for the Mederma for Kids (it is purple so you can see where it is, but disappears). I can't remember where I got it (Target, Walmart, Kmart) but I do remember one place had it for $14 a tube, but I found it for $7 somewhere else.

My preschool daughter hates all medicine, she even goes as far as to vomit when we push it on her, so I feel your pain. I am a nurse and know the importance of getting that antibiotic into your son for strep. The most recent thing that has worked for me is mixing my daughters medication in orange juice (I think you said it's a liquid) OJ has a strong flavor and is good at hiding the medicine, depending on the color of the med you can add food coloring and make it blue or green juice. Really pump it up,make him want it :rolleyes1, mix just enough to hide the flavor to make sure he drinks it all. If your son doesn't like OJ try some other drink that he really likes and that's special for him to get. Persuasion is always better than brute force.;)

Good luck, Stephanie

Just another recommendation on getting the meds into your little one. My little one LOVES yogurt, usually eats only vanilla flavor, but we have easily mixed a number of bad tasting meds or fruit flavored ones, into her vanilla yogurt and she has never said a word and eats it all up. We used to put it in her milk sippy, but now she tastes it immediately in there and won't drink it. Maybe if your little one likes yogurt, that would work for you. Good luck, I'm sure everything will turn out just fine!

Thank you, I will try that! I don't know why I didn't think of it, but it would be much better than just waiting to see if it fades.

Can you mix the meds into apple sauce? Plain or raspberry might work.

Oh, that is a good idea. He loves applesauce. I will try that in the morning. We just gave him dose number two fir today and you would think we were trying to kill him! I will try anything to get him to take it without a shot or IV.

Oh my!!! I feel for you.... Weeks?! I am hoping that the antibiotics will work as long as they get in him!!!!

No kids could be worse at taking meds than mine. Yep, I could hold them down to take it but then they were crying so hard they would throw it up anyway.
couple of ideas: Give her as much control as possible, where to take it, who gives it, what drink to follow it with etc. Even let her help hold it if possible. Maybe have grandma come ovet to give it. I am the only one that can give DGS his meds.

Check with the drug store to be sure it can be mixed and then try a strong flavor food she does not normaly eat. Chocolate sauce or pudding works well. Just a bite or two in case she does not want more. Peanut butter works well IF she has eaten this before but do not introduce now if not.

Try giving a popcicle first to numb the taste buds.

Try giving it during bath time when she is distracted and the spit mess if not a big deal.

Avoid mixing with favorite foods as she might reject them later. Found this out with DGS the hard way when MIL mixed his with milk.

GOOD LUCK. Just do not give up. He has to have them and IV's are not fun for toddlers. We had to do that last month for dehydration.

I don't know which is worse the kid who won't take the medicine or the kid who loves it. My oldest and youngest hate it. The middle one loves it  ; we've had several scary incidents with him and medicine - Long story short he chugged an entire bottle of caeflex, and took grandpa's diabetes medication and ... :scared1:. Anyway, for all that it's tough be glad your DS doesn't love medicine.

As far as getting the medicine into your DS - for my two that hated medicine I found that if I used a medicine syringe and squirted a very tiny amount (quarter ml or so) onto the back of the tongue and then alternated with a sip of juice or milk they seemed to get it down okay.

I'm sorry your little one is not feeling well. Our DD has been on amoxicillin quite a few times for chronic ear infections. A nurse friend of ours suggested using a bottle nipple to administer the meds and it works like a charm!!! We put the nipple in DD's mouth then squirt the measured amount of meds in and she sucks the meds right down. No gagging, no struggles - we no longer dread giving meds! Good luck and I hope your son's infection heals quickly!
