We are hoping to visit Stone Mountain during spring break and looked on-line at their campground. It seems to be rather expensive (almost the cost of FW) and I'm not sure it will have the "perks" that FW has. Is there someone who would be willing to share with me about the Stone Mountain campground?

We have stayed at Stone Mountain a few times...once in "Snow Mountain" season. There is a fair amount to do and the park is fun. The laser lightshow is awesome. The only caution I have is on the campsites. Some of the sites are difficult to pull into and some are a nightmare to level... I remember this one guy had a least a two foot stack of blocks to get his trailer level on one side. The best wooded site IMHO is 383A. It is a back in site, but it is easy to work with and near a shower facility, which are pretty nice in the park. THey have some pull thrus and larger premium sites near the pool, but those seem very difficult to get.

As far as Stone Mountain goes, you don't really have any other choice for a campsite other than on the property. But it is a decent campground. We have stayed there a few times, but as the other post advised, some of the sites aren't the most level, so you may consider bringing extra leveling blocks just in case.

Here is a link to the campground if you don't have it already.

Thanks for the information. We will be sure to carry a few extra blocks for leveling.

We stayed there about a year ago. It was nice and wooded. Quiet at night. We also got free donuts and coffee on Sat. morning.

However, I thought it was pricey. There weren't a lot of things to do unless you went over to the Stone Mountain village area. There are some free things, once you are in (costs money to enter the park and the campground is in the park). However, if you want to do anything in the village area (Skyhike, 4D theatre, etc.) you have to pay for it and it isn't cheap. I think you can wander around the shops for free.

It was nice, but we don't plan on camping there again.

We were there in '08. We were tent camping, but I did notice that the RV sites looked fairly tight to get into. I could be wrong, but I think the campground has been revamped since then, and many of the tent sites were converted to RV sites. Maybe this has loosened things up a bit?

In any case, the pool is fairly small and can get absolutely jam-packed. But we had a blast at the park -- there's so much to do besides the main park. We took the "Ride the Ducks" tour and visited the farm, saw a little demo with the farm animals (surprisingly cute show!), and of course the laser show is amazing.

I spotted a Mickey lamp while we were there, but no one was there when we walked past. Didn't get a chance to go back and see if it was someone from this board!

I have lived within sight of the Mountain since '87 and have never camped there. Have used their dump station a few times in times past. They let me pay to enter the park and pay to dunp, then get a refund of my park fee when I showed my dump receipt. It was a bother because i had to leave my RV and go to the exit booth at the gate. Now I use the dump at the state welcome stations.

I have also not visited since Silver Dollar City took over from the state about ten years ago, although I understand thay have put in several attractions, they have also charged for them where almost everything used to be free for the cost of park admission. Fortunately the laser show is still on the "free" side of the park.

We've camped at Stone Mountain twice in the past few months. We really like it but the campground isn't nearly as nice or fun as Ft. Wilderness. They have packages that you can camp for two nights and get 2 day park passes for a special price and you can save quite a bit of money doing it this way. You can either get the package for 2 or 4 people. Here's the link here: (http://www.stonemountainpark.com/lodging-camping/camping.aspx). They also sell tickets for the park at the campground, buy one day get one free and the second ticket was good until the end of the year.

You do have to book the camping packages online, for some reason. Their online system doesn't really explain which sites are which and it asks you to request your top three sites. I recommend calling the campground and telling them the size of your RV and they're really helpful with choosing which site would be best. They can tell you what's available and as soon as you hang up you can book it. They send you an e-mail within 24 hours confirming your site.

Both times we went we stayed in the purple sites near the pool and playground, because we have young kids so we wanted to be near there. We drove all around and there were some sites that I would not have liked with the kids because of big drop offs. Some of the sites overlook the water, which is nice. They did re-do some of the sites earlier this year too. You can see the map on their website of all the different sites.

Ditto what everyone else said about having trouble leveling on their sites. Most of the sites don't have concrete pads so it can be a little frustrating.

You do have to pay $10 parking just to get into the park. They'll give you a pass at the campground that's good for your whole stay (otherwise it would be $10/day).

The first time we went we just got their regular camping package which included 2 nights of camping, 2 two day passes to the park, bundle of firewood, and 2 slushies. The second time we went was before Christmas and we got the same two day passes to the park (Stone Mountain Christmas), bundle of firewood, and a s'mores kit. They also have packages for Snow Mountain.

We really enjoyed the park because there's a lot to do with our kids. You can do it all in one day though, so the second day of tickets aren't really necessary, or you can save them for another time.

I don't see any camping packages right now other than for Snow Mountain. You might want to call them and ask them if they'll have new packages for when you're planning on going. It might just be a little too early.

I hope you have fun! :)

We have stayed at Stone Mountain twice and both times were in the 427, 429 & 431 sites. These sites are at the end of the campground road and have more room than the ones by the pool area. As someone said, you must take extra leveling boards because they "lean" to one side. They do have sewer at these sites.

We stayed there last summer and 3 years previously. They changed the interior sites to be more big rig friendly and in so doing there is almost no trees there. Most sites are not very level except in the center around the pool area. We stayed on a partial hookup site at the very end of the campground right on the lake.. There were a few sites there that weren't on top of each other. All in all not too bad but wouldn't hold much more than a popup or small travel trailer. Try the breakfast buffet at the Marriot in the park it was great! Stay away from the buffet at the older hotel closest to the mountain it was awful. The park has a lot to do and we got the camping package which was a good deal. My family really loved the sky hike.
