Need some new ideas. I've done cake, cupcakes, pizza, for DS to take to school for his birthday celebration. I don't want to spend a lot of money as it is also my snack week + his birthday party at an amusement park. I was thinking about the rice crispie sushi -- has any one made this? Or do you have any other "original" ideas.

I'll be making his cake also that night so nothing that requires alot of work -or something that can be made ahead.

Do the Teachers have a refrigerator in their lounge that they could put something in? If they do I've sent in ice cream treats. to save money something like a couple of boxes of ice cream sandwiches from Aldi's or Walmart. Or once for my DD's small class we sent in Dilly bars. The kids always like them. In Kindergarten my DS took Krispy Kremes, the kids loved them and I had a buy one doz. get on free coupon so it was reasonable.

I have made the rice krispie treat "sushi" a few times and one thing I have to say is that everyone likes it - my 10 yr olds, 4 yr old cousins, 16 yr old neice & 12 year old nephew, and adults too. It is definitely a crowd pleaser and it really is not hard to do. Travels well, too.

How far in advance can you make it? I got the recipe from a site with recipes from Walt Disney World and it said not to make them in advance because they will get too hard. I was thinking, if I can make them ahead of time, I could put several in a cellophane bag with a bow to keep them fresh.

Thanks for all the ideas. I asked DS what he wanted and he said "whatever is easiest for you Mom." What a sweet kid --- total opposite of his DS.

What is rice crispie sushi?

It's rice krispie treats made to look like sushi. I found the recipe on a WDW recipe site from CR. You use fruit roll ups, rice krispie treat mix and swedish fish or gummy worms.

What about fruit pizza or taking muffins and fruit in the morning? I took the fruit pizza for my 10 yr old DD's bday and her class loved it.(pampered chef recipe) I took fruit and muffins for my 6yr old DD's birthday. The class loved getting a treat in the morning instead of the usual afternoon treat. The teacher liked it too since they had birthday treats everyday that week!

How about dirt pudding cups? You can take those clear throw away cups and do a layer of choc. pudding/layer of dirt (crumbled oreos)/layer of pudding/and another layer of dirt then top it off with a gummy worm. I think those would be a crowd pleaser for any 11 yr old child and they are VERY GOOD!!!

For one of my senior projects in 12th grade English we had to demonstrate how to make something and this is what I made for a class of about 25 17-18 year olds. IT WAS A HIT!!!!:rotfl:

where I am (Rochester NY) you couldn't bring homemade treats for as long as my kids have been in school.. and starting this year you can only bring "healthy" treats.. we have a list of what is approved... low fat ice cream, fruit snacks, crackers.. nothing exciting enough for a birthday.:sad1:

In some ways it's good though.. it seemed like sometimes the parties were never ending, and my DD has a huge sweet tooth... the teachers even have to come up with healthy treats for Easter and Halloween.

Have you tried ice cream cone cupcakes? They are fun and not a ton of work..

How about cool pencils and a shaped eraser. Some of the kids are just about due for a new eraser at this time of the school year!

I'm really surprised the no homemade rule hasn't made it here. As far as junk food goes, it is only allowed for birthdays. This week is also my snack week -- we are allowed to bring fruit, vegetables, crackers (no chips).

The pencil idea is cool.

Thanks everyone for all of your input. I sat here and reviewed all the answers with DS and he picked the rice krispie sushi w/ a set of chopsticks to hand out. I found the chopsticks last night at Walmart 10 for .98 -- so that ended up being pretty inexpensive. Now to make all of these!

I am a first grade teacher and the school I teach at does not allow homemade treats. I love the idea of the pencil and eraser. I had one parent make up small bags (not a lot of $$). They had a sticker, a pencil and a small container of playdough. The kids loved them!!! If you can make snacks how about muffins and fruit kabobs (fruit wedges and melon balls on wooden skewers) The kids made this at school for a cooking project in math last year..i know they can make food but not being it in....oh well. Just make sure to break off the points on the skewers after you thread on the fruit. Good luck!!!

I'm sorry but I gave up the "birthday treat" after kindergarten for my eldest. Making whole wheat brownies for the preschooler's birthday on Tuesday(fed them to my SIL and she didn't believe they were whole wheat, Thank Goodness for the King Arthur Flour Whole Grain cookbook  )Actually our school would prefer homemade treats over packaged stuff.
