Okay, I'm hearing lots of things about the new Privacy Act, and I have a question!

I rent a storage locker, and there is a public sign-in sheet that requires your signature, time in and out, as well as your locker number. Is this not a violation of the Privacy Act?

I was just curious... I've stopped signing my signature (and just putting vague initials) becuase I don't really want people knowing where my stuff is! I guess I'm paranoid.

Thanks!

How about this one for violation of privacy act. We stayed at a Marriott this weekend ( I wont say which one) so I got my receipt for our room and on the back of my computer printed receipt was a complete list of all the people who stayed at this hotel with their full names, check in/check out dates, room #'s, room type etc. Written on the bottom was the note This information is confidential and privileged...Property of Marriott.

So I go to the person at the front desk and ask her if I should have this information with all the new privacy laws etc. and her answer to me was it's OK Marriott has a paper recycling policy :rotfl2:

I guess Marriotts policies override all Government Policies.

So now I guess I will appear on someone else's receipt.

Wazzo, I am not sure if that would violate the privacy law or not..it does not display any personal info regarding you. What I mean is if all someone had was a signature, what can they do with that? Could they figure out an actual name even? Most signatures I see are quite illegible. I could be wrong, was trying to look up info regarding PIPEDA and whatnot, but i found unclear info with just a signature.

But on the other hand, I would do exactly what you are doing! Just signing some 'vague initials' seems wise, because if someone were intent on gaining info on you, sure they would need more then just your sig, but if you sign that paper, then they have it!

Holy Cow,
that really does violate the privay act! At least regarding the Canadian one! I am actually shocked they would allow that. I work for a financial institution in which we are required to go through annual testing for privacy, and what you just said fails Privacy 101! If a business wishes to 'share' names and personal info of them, the customer must give consent (expressed in writing, verbal, or otherwise) that their info will be posted. Point Blank.

While it may or may not violate the federal privacy act (hard to say, as the federal act only applies to federally incorporated companies, and who knows the type of incorporation of that particular hotel), I'm willing to bet it strongly violates Mariott's policies.

It is unheard of (and extremely dangerous) for a hotel to share the names and room numbers of its guests (this is why when you check into a room, the cleark will never say your room number out loud. Regardless of a recycling policy, this type of violation is wrong (whoever loaded this paper into the printer will get into a lot of trouble).

You NEED to inform the Mariott Corp of this @ privacy@marriott.com (in order to protect the others in the hotel).

You are actually right I think I will especially since I am pretty sure our family's name appeared on someone else's receipt.
