Does anyone have a Mini Cooper? We are looking at trading in my 2006 Tahoe and getting a Mini Cooper and I can't decide if it is worth it to look at the Cooper S. Does anyone have one and have an opinion about the difference in the drive?

TIA!

I don't have either but I want one...also love the clubman...I would like to hear what owners say also!!!

I have a 2005 Mini Cooper, which I love, Love, LOVE! It's so fun to drive; great get up and go power, easy to manuever, parkings a breeze. In addition, when the back seats are folded down, it will hold an amazing amount of stuff. It's feels a little bit like driving a go-cart. :goodvibes

The only thing I wish it had is power seats. DH and I are on the road quite a bit and power adjustable front seats would be nice.

So your happy with the Cooper, you don't have a Cooper S? I drove the Cooper yesterday and was quite happy with it but my husband wants me to drive the S just to be sure.

One of the things I keep considering is my daughter turns 14 today and more than likely I will pass this car on to her in 2 years. I figure if I LOVE the car I can go buy myself a S in two years. I've driven a V8 for the past 3-1/2 years to S or no S it doesn't feel like a lot of power anyway!

Thanks for the feedback.

Our Cooper is a 2004 and we love it (well, love him; his name is Murray :lmao:). Not an S, though, and to be honest I don't remember test driving an S so I can't really comment on the difference between. The only things I remember are the S has more horsepower. That said, we've never found the Cooper lacking in pep - the CVT is particularly handy when you need to control the shift points, say, for merging on the freeway or whatever. Granted, if you're looking at a standard transmission that's kind of a moot point anyway.

One thing to be aware of with Minis is that while you have a lot longer between required services/oil changes and such, they're expensive. For ours (with synthetic oil; I'm really not sure if all Minis have that) - it's upwards of $100 for an oil change, but it's also only once every 15,000 miles or so. And the 'service inspections' they do are similarly expensive - we just went through the second full service and it was $400+. Though keep in mind we've had the car since November '03 and that was the second (and final) 'big' service they do, so compared to other cars where you need to do these things more often, it probably balances out over the long term.

I'd say give test driving the S a shot just to see if you find a difference, but we've been very happy with our S-less Cooper. I'm hoping to get Murray a little brother or sister someday. ;)

I agree with everything Carolyn says. I've never driven the S either, so can't really campare the two. Yes, maintenance is expensive but we've had to have very little done outside of regular maintenance.
I have 80,000 miles on mine and she's (Gidget) is still going strong.

Thank you so much for your responses.

We did got test drive the cars today and my husband thinks the S is the way to go. We have negotiated on a 2010 Mini Cooper S and should be able to pick it up mid-week. We are having them add an armrest so they need a few days to do the detailing (just came off the truck last night) and install the armrest.

The car is Laser Blue and the only qualm I am having is the wheels. They are black web and I'm just not sure about them. I can't decide if I will like the black wheels or would rather go with the silver. The car has black trim, black side mirrors and a black roof so my husband thinks I should stick with the black and I just can't decide. They said they could switch them out for any silver ones they have on the lot. So when I go to get it I might ask them to change one of the tires to a silver wheel and see how it looks. Don't want to offend anyone but I told the saleswoman it looks like the car was on Pimp my Ride.

I was not surprised to here your reports about maintenance cost. My husband has a Volvo and service/maintenance is not cheap but it doesn't happen often and it sounds like it happens even less with the Mini. I think his car goes in every 7,000 miles and they said this one goes 12,000 to 15,000. I live out in the country and I put quite a few miles on my car. It is 20 miles round trip to the school each way so that's a minimum of 40 miles a day I am putting on the car. That doesn't even take in to consideration the trips into the small town to the West and Fort Worth to the East. My car is a 2006 and I have 81,000 on it. I know when I put new tires on the car in December of '08 I had 55,000 on that car. So they add up quickly around here! When you live in Texas you have to plan on driving quite a bit.

My daughter thinks we should name the car Dory but I keep saying we should name it Ditka (my husband said Ditka himself is bigger than the car). I'm fairly certain Dory will be the name we go with. My husband just says we are crazy to even think about naming a car. But it's just so cute it calls out for a name! LOL!

I have a 2006 Cooper S. It is currently at 119,000 miles on it. I must say the S model has a lot of zip. I live in the foothills of the Sierra's and have a hour of driving mountain roads a day and Mini can climb the hills with no effort at all. I have driven a Cooper before, but the turbo englne of the S really stands out.

As BeamsOfLight stated, Mini is a very expensive car to maintain. I went through a spell of horrible luck with my run flat tires and was going through them quickly. They are expensive! So, I went with a standard tire and a can of liquid air and my AAA card! :thumbsup2

While I truly love my Mini, she is going away now in favor of a 4 wheel drive suv that can handle snow. Plus, my youngest can no longer sit comfortably in the back seat since he is now pushing 6ft.

Enjoy your new baby!! I hope your Mini dealership was as awesome as mine and made my purchase a very memorable experience!

Quick update...we were able to complete the purchase of Dory yesterday afternoon. I ended up staying with the black wheels. They were not what I was picturing in my mind and I was happy with them when I went back and looked at the car again yesterday morning.

I tried to get my daughter to let me name the car Walter after Walter Payton and she wouldn't go for it. So Dory it is.

Thanks for all your comments. I appreciate them all.

Congrats on your purchase! I hope you have many happy miles together. :thumbsup2
