Just thinking about my trip to the market today. I can not believe the price of milk and hamburg! I paid 4.89 for a gallon of milk yet could not bring myself to pay 4.09 for a pound of hamburg! :scared1: How much are these "common goods" where you live? Just curious.

None of us drink milk here but I do buy it occasionally to cook. I think a gallon is close to $4. By hamburg do you mean ground beef? The only ground meat I buy is turkey and it runs about $1.99 on sale which is when I buy it.

DH and I were just talking about this yesterday. He read an article that stated China just lifted the ban on franchises. Apparently the Chinese have just discovered MCDonald's and we are paying for it. Supply and demand of the cow. We buy milk for DS but you can forget the beef!

McDonalds has been in China for years - at least in the larger cities. Plus, they have cattle there for their own consumption. I think it's more likely our own shrinking farmland and small farms going under that's causing the problem.

I only buy beef on sale at $1.99, and that's usually the 90% kind. We buy organic milk, and its $3.25 a half gallon...but I just got some on sale for $1.40!!!

Apparently McDonalds and Starbucks are at an all time high demand in China. It's global but they keep citing China as a leader in the demand. I only know this wcause DH is really into current affairs.I never have to watch the news:rotfl:

Wow, okay they est. that demand for China alone will increase 15-20 percdent annually for the next several yrs!:scared1: I'm getting a cow!:rotfl:

Milk is $3.89 here at the grocery store, but there is a local pharmacy chain that has it for 2.49 a gallon.

we buy milk from a local dairy for $3.75/gallon. And we bought a side of beef from a local farmer for about $2/pound a few months ago (about half of it is ground beef and half steaks and roasts). I haven't checked on the price of ground beef at the store lately, but our milk is a few cents more than the store brand milk at the grocery store near us, but this milk is hormone and antibiotic free and the cows are pastured at least a lot of the time.

Milk is about $3.80 a gallon, and I puy ground turkey at $1.99 a pound...very rarely do I buy ground beef and that's only when it is marked way down, I have gotten it recently for $1.49 a pound. I would like to go and purchase a half a cow, does anyone know the best way to go about doing this?? I don't know what's what when it comes to beef!!!

Prices are up due to the drought conditions. Some friends with a dairy farm have only been able to get one cut of hay (usually have 2 and the third growing by this time of year) and are having to use it for feed, rather than putting it back for the winter. There is no more grass for grazing.

That said, she still sells her milk for $3 a gallon. I buy hamburg on sale for about $1.49 for ground round. This, too, comes from a local producer.

WOW! I want to move! Milk here in San Antonio was $4.07 this morning. Now, that is hormone free milk but the other is not much cheaper. My family loves organic milk but that is well over $5.00/gallon.

I always buy my ground beef at Sams. They seem to have the best prices for the 90%. I know it is under $2.00/pound there.

All food prices seem to be going up!

The main reason milk prices are up is because of the Ethanol push plain and simple-the drought is just adding to it. Corn prices have been going up all year and it is just now really affecting us here. Mexico has been hit sooner and having real problems. There is only so much corn and if we insist on it going to ethanol, milk and beef will be higher. Expect other crops to go up also as farmers shift to corn for the government money.

check out eatwild.com and localharvest.com for local cattle farmers. our $2/pound price was really, really cheap--I think the guy was selling off cows early so he wouldn't have to bring in grain to feed them (because of the drought), so we got a deal. $4-5/lb seems more typical around here (I'm in N. Georgia)

Milk here is $4.19 for Publix brand and $4.29 at Target. I can usually stock up on 90% ground beef for $2.99/lb on sale. I think it is $4.29/lb regular price.

I only buy organic milk and I pay a fortune for it. Almost $4 for a half gallon I think.

Milk here was $3.88 per gallon, but I paid $3.29 w/ comp ads.

I won't pay over $1.99 for ground chuck. I usually get it for $1.60 or so.

Milk is 3.60 a gallon here for 1%. It is the same price at every store I go to. Milk NEVER goes on sale here in PA.

I haven't purchased ground beef in a while, but I think I paid $2.49 a pound on sale the last time I bought it. I usually buy the big family pack, divide it and seal it in foodsaver bags. We don't eat a lot of it, so it lasts a while in the freezer.

Locally the issue is the inability to graze the cattle this year. Farmers are slaughtering early, and trying to make up the deficit. My girlfriend is looking at raising the price of her milk by a buck a gallon. They will eventually get hit by the grain prices if their field doesn't produce enought to sustain their dairy cattle thru the winter/spring.

Small town Iowan here! :wave2:

A gallon of whole milk here is a little over $3 usually at our local grocer. We go through A LOT of it at my little coffee shop. I get my meat from my sister who raises a small herd of cattle (antibiotic free/ hormone free) and she sells her ground beef for $3 lb and sells her butchered cows in 1/4's for $1.99 per lb and $1.50 per lb for 1/2's. I'm lucky to come from a family of farmers sometimes! :thumbsup2
