OT- little girls and yeast infections/UTI

After reading this I am a little worried. DD had one UTI when she was about 18 months old (she is now 26 months). At the time the Dr thought it might be good to get a VCUG but I resisted because it sounds painful and she also had just gotten over a staff infection (long story....whole family had a antibiotic resistant infection) I was so tramatized by the infection thing that I didnt want an invasive test done. The UTI cleared right up and she has never had any other problems.....should I ask the Dr. to do it anyway? HE agreed with me at the time and said we didnt need to do it.....What do you all think. Is one UTI at a young age a reason to do the test. I am going to ask the Dr on our next visit but I am just curious as to what you have all found.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions!! I have used aveeno before myself, so I think I might try some of that in order to make some bubbles in the water. DD seems much better after 2 nights withour Mr Bubble in her bath. The food coloring is also a neat idea!

What are the most common symptoms of a UTI? Would dd not be able to go potty? Would her urine be a different color? Just want to know what to look out for in the future. Thanks!

My daughter just had the exact same symptoms. She is potty trained during the day, but wears a diaper to bed. The doctor tested her for UTI which was negative and told us to use Monostat and gave us a prescription for diaper rash medicine. Within a week it was much better, but I honestly think it was the Monostat that helped the most (she even asked for me to put it on after going to the bathroom). That diaper at night was a little yeast factory the doctor said, and we might have trouble until she is night trained. We also gave up the bubble baths, and the symptoms haven't come back (cross fingers).

My DD had very similar symptoms, and it was vaginitis (it happened after a round of antibiotics, which isn't uncommon). We were told to use an OTC antifungal cream and diaper rash cream on the area regularly.

My 4 yr old has the same problem(would get red around her ****** with whitish stuff that smelt and pain)and after taking her to doctor found out it is like a yeast infection.Now I use Clotrimazole cream for it-it is the active ingrediant in Gynolotromin.She said it has to be that and not the medicine used in Monistat.I had a little problem finding it cause everyone carries the Monistat these days but I found the generic clotrimazole 7 in Eckerds.My doctors daughter gets the same problem she said-she told me to use the cream for 7 days and then as needed if it continues,to put her to sleep in nightgowns without underwear on and to try to keep the area dry.No long bubble baths and I stopped using the pull up wipes and switched to toilet paper for her.She would get it worse in the hot summer when she would swim alot and be in the wet bathing suit.I also used to use the diaper cream and it would seem like it helped for a little while but the doctor said not to use it cause it just keeps area moist and adds to the bacteria growth.I give her yogurt with the actve culture everday also cause they say it helps with the bacteria balance in your body.Definatly get her checked and if it is the same don't worry-using these things have helped greatly and now my dd isn't so against using the potty cause it doesn't hurt her to go pee-pee anymore!

Probiotic supplements were the only thing that helped my dd's recurrent yeast. That and working on better hygiene...they started around the time she began taking care of her potty needs completely independently. Luckily no UTI's for us.

Because of our issues with dyes and perfumes we've found natural bubble baths that are very gentle. I particularly like the California Baby herbal ones...but they are expensive. I put them in the kids' stockings at Christmas as a special treat. Kind of painful to pay $10 for a small bottle when you can get a bottle 3 times the size at the supermarket for $1....but not as painful as dealing with the dye, perfume, yeast and potential UTI issues. Cheaper than paying for the supplements and medications too!

I would request it for sure...the standard procedure for even ONE UTI is to have the VCUG. Reflux is so common that it is worth checking out. We blew off the first UTI and didn't have it checked...now we are well down the road in Reflux-ville. I would have saved my precious DD some major pain and problems if I hadn't been so squeamish about the VCUG the first time around.

BTW, they gave my DD versed (sp?) before the procedure so that she was conscious, but not really aware of what they were doing. Worked like a charm. No pain and no realization that people were working "down there". She is 2 yrs. 10 months (and scheduled for surgery in Oct.).

Please don't take this the wrong way... but why on eart would you choose to post on a disney message board about this and NOT call your pediatrician? If your daughter might have a medical problem, Disney addicts would not be the place to turn.

How awful - I didn't even realise little girls could have UTI's.

I've had UTI's twice (last year and the year before). I found it horrific - if I get it again this year or early next year I think they'll send me to get my kidney's tested.

It's really bad too... in the last 2.5yrs I've had 5 courses of antibiotics..
- UTI (one course)
- UTI (two courses)
- Mouth/tooth abcess (one course)
- Stitches in mouth after tooth removal (one course)

Think I'm going to have to let my doctor know about the dental antibiotics... I'm getting worried about building up a resistance!

Dislove I didnt take your post the wrong way I did say that I was going to ask the Dr. on our next visit (which is in Oct.) I went on to say I was just curious as to what others had found out. When the Dr talked about it he didnt seem to concerned that I wanted to put this off or forget about it all together. We have not had a visit to the Dr. since but we do have one scheduled for Oct. I will discuss it with him then. I was just curious as to what others had gone through dealing with this test and the outcomes. It sounds like one infection is enough to look into the test again. I thought that just one infection wasnt so bad......I know I am naive. YUCK the test sounded painful . Oh well if it can rule out kidney problems we will go ahead and do it if the Dr still thinks it is something she needs. Hopefully it was just one infection caused by Bubble Bath.

My daughter just had her third UTI in the past four years. This time the doctor suggested we do the renal ultrasound and the VCUG. It just came back on Saturday and she has a mild case of reflux. We will be seeing the pediatric urologist next month. Glad to know this is more common than I thought. She is only 8 and she knew exactly what they were doing and wasn't too happy about it, even though she was prepared beforehand.

Whether or not a child needs a VCUG after a UTI is dependant on several factors. Most notably, the age of the child and the number of infections. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a VCUG is strongly recommended with the first UTI in children less than 2 years of age. After this age, opinions differ. Many pediatricians will give a child 2 infections after 2 years of age before proceeding with VCUG. Also, a UTI with fever -- by definition, a true "kidney" infection or pyelonephritis -- would be more likely to need immediate VCUG because of the high possibility of reflux in this situation. You can't generalize and say that every child that has UTI needs a VCUG -- each situation needs individual attention and to be discussed with a pediatrician you trust.

Any child with symptoms suggestive of a UTI needs to be seen and treated immediately. My DD, then 8, had her first and only UTI that wasn't cultured & she was given an antibiotic that couldn't cure the bacteria. As a result, the infection moved to her kidneys and she became very ill. At that point, her urine was cultured and she finally was given the correct antibiotic. We were then referred to an urologist for follow-up (by the surgeon that we were referred to initially because the pain was suspect for appendicitis!).

He wanted to do the VCUG. I read everything I could about it. It didn't make sense to me that a kid who was 8 with her first UTI and kidney infection would likely have reflux. He wasn't happy that I didn't want to do the procedure. We did do the ultrasound (no damage found). I also declined his recommendation for long term antibiotics. I appreciate his concerns for the potential for kidney damage, but in her case, I really think it was overkill.

She's not had any more problems and we've asked for urine cultures when she's complained of stomach aches (results have been negative).

IMHO, every situation is different and warrants treatment/tests based on the individual situation. However, based on my DD's experience, getting the urine cultured when it comes back positive for UTI is an absolute must.
