OT - Kids Lunchbox Sugggestions

Put boiling water in the thermos and seal -- let it sit for a few minutes. We heat (think you meant "heat" not "eat" LOL) the food in the morning, and then put it in the hot thermos. Stays hot through lunch!

I've never done that. I will have to try. I always just re-heat the food in the morning and stick it in the thermos and my boys say it stays hot. Stuff like chicken nugs (which they took today in fact), I cook it while they are eating breakfast and take them straight from the oven and stick them in the thermos. Pick up ketchup packets from fast food places and stick those in their lunch too!

Ok - I'm convinced - I'll be buying thermoses this summer. My poor DS has been living off of lunchables, celery and peanut butter, or the occasional peanut butter crackers and DD starts kindergarten in the fall. I never even thought of putting hot chicken nuggets or cut hot dogs in there??! You guys are my hero's :yay:

So for those thermos users - one question. Our school does things a little different (recess before lunch - so that kids don't rush through eating to get outside). They take their lunches out of lockers and put in bin that is sometimes stored outside during recess so they can then carry down to lunch (they walk outside the building down to lunchroom at other end) so if they are outside in the winter do you think the thermos will still keep the food warm - they're outside for 1/2 hour I think??

So excited to buy thermos' now :goodvibes

Our school does the same exact thing with the lunches at recess. DS sometimes will come home with uneaten food in his thermos and it's still hot when I go to clean it out. :)

Wow - thanks for the info. My kids will eat so much better next year thanks to my DIS Friends!! :goodvibes

This probably sounds stupid but I am confused about the boiling water?? You pour that in the main part of the thermos? Do you then pour it out before you put the food in? I have not seen a thermos in ages so I am not even sure of the logistics of the inside of them. TIA!!

I am loving all the Thermos tips. I had no idea. We will definitely be using ours this fall and utilize some of these suggestions.

Pour the hot water into the thermos, put the cover on top. Wait a couple of minutes (usually while I'm zapping the food in the microwave), then dump the water out, add the hot food. Don't microwave the thermos.

Basically, you're preheating the carafe to save the heat from the food heating the carafe (which would cause the food to get colder faster).
