OT - How do I get rid of this stupid Gift Card

Hi All,

This might sound bad and ungrateful but I've tried everything I can to spend a gift card we got for our wedding. We tried buying something and then bringing it back, but instead of cash they gave us a gift card back.

The gift card is from Sears and I just tried to book my flight with them for October. No problem the sales person said. Here's your flight options...Air Canada (yes just what I wanted and paired up with my aeroplan freebie, I'm getting away with you know what)....but you can't book Air Canada or WestJet with a gift card. Ummm, what other airlines are there that serve Halifax? well there is Delta for $800.00 and then you can purchase your second $800.00 ticket instead of your Aeroplan ticket. Oh, so spend $1600.00 to save $350 when I can go on Air Canada or WestJet right now and book for less...hmmm.

I shouldn't complain as it was a generous gift but our local Sears is like Value Village (I'm not kidding!)

For fun, I'm asking for any creative suggestions that the dis community may have. :thumbsup2

You could probably sell it for 20% off the value. Just post it on some local classifieds websites.

Other option is to wait until you need stuff for the house or whatever and use it. Sears has all sorts of stuff although their regular prices suck, just keep an eye out for sales. Also you could use it to buy gifts for others when there are birthdays/weddings etc...

Or if you really want to get rid of it, I guess I could take it off your hands. :cool1:

Out of curiosity, which Sears is like a Value Village ? I find the one by the Halifax Shopping Centre is decent.

I wonder why you can't use the gift card for certain airlines, I thought they were like cash. I guess maybe Sears Travel is different :confused3

Donate it and get a tax receipt....less taxable income! S

Go to the Sears Outlet site and buy everything you need for your trip, everything you need for the house, and all of your presents for this year. In fact, have a blast!

I had heard that Sears was one of the stores that would give you the cash for a gift card????

I would call and double check this because I am sure this was their policy at some point.

If you push the issue with Sears and speak to a store manager, I am sure they will accommodate you to make you happy.

Just explain that there is nothing you need right now and you really need the money and I think they may help you out unless they really changed their policy.

Good Luck!

:rotfl2:

That was me reading all the suggestions. I knew you guys would come up with some funny stuff.

As I was searching Sears.ca (searsoutlet.ca) I noticed a button 'redeem gift cards'. Is it me or is questions 6 suggesting that if I buy something through the website and then return it, I will have the 350 applied to my credit card?

PS - sorry djpositivek, but I have been spoiled by the Sears stores in other cities and the one in the Halifax Shopping Centre is the one I am speaking of. Ever notice how disorganized and small the household section is. And I agree with another poster.....terrible prices. Now if the GC was for Futureshop...would have been spent long ago ;)

Ebay.

You won't get 100 cents on the dollar. But if you would rather have most of the cash rather than all of the credit...

If you are still looking to book the airline tickets you should be able to purchase them with a Sears Card (yes, you'd need to get one) and then to pay the Sears Card with the gift card. (I paid for part of my honeymoon this way a couple of years ago.)

I have also found that the Sears catalogue has lots more than the stores and that their outlet centres have GREAT deals on appliances.

Good luck!

I would look on line and get something you need on line or from the catalogue. They do have some lovely stuff. The other option to find out is if Sears in the U.S. takes the gift card. I know that I can use my Sears Canada credit card in the U.S.

And if you're looking for any furniture or major household appliances, check out the Sears furniture store in the Bayers Lake shopping area... I'd think the gift card could be applied there, it is a Sears store.

Know what you mean about the Sears in the Halifax Shopping Centre. When I first came I was disappointed by the lack of choice/inventory in ALL the department stores here, and when Eaton's went under nobody even moved in to the niche (Sears took over their space in the HSC). Now, I guess I'm used to it... Sears looks okay to me now and I get dazzled and confused when I hit a big-city department store!

I would check out sears.ca, they have lots of really great stuff, even if you just use it for stuff that is for fun, MP3 player ect.. but if your looking for $$ perhaps ebay would be best, you might not get the full amount... but its worth a shot

Some airlines won't let you use your Sears Card to pay for airfare through Sears travel.
