I am totally frustrated with this program...it says I owe taxes! Um, hello, Government of Canada...that is my disneymoney!

I do not get it since we are in for over 6500 between charitable donations and daycare, and we paid another 1600 into our RRSPs! Doesn't that pretty much guarantee a refund somewhere? Jeez Louise!

I was on mat leave for half of the year but i was on mat leave for half of 2006 and we still wound up with a refund. I am totally befuddled and not a little annoyed.

Should I send the whole thing to an accountant?

:surfweb:

I love quicktax!!I used it for the first time this year and we are getting $3000.00 back:goodvibes !! We weren't expecting a refund because 1/2 our taxes were taken off in Ontario and then moved to NS - where taxes are alot higher. Did you claim the new $2000.00 per child credit? We have 3 kids so I think this helped us quite a bit. Maybe try to do it yourself (by hand) before handing off to an accountant. I found the program confusing at first and had to go back a few times to readjust. At one point I thought we were getting $5500.00 back and at that point realized I was doing it wrong:confused3 . Good luck.:wizard:

ITA. If you miss any of the questions or situations that apply to you, it will mess up your return. I would go back to the beginning and start over and be sure to check off all situations that apply to you, or you THINK may apply to you.

If you come to that section and a certain issue does not apply to you, you can just skip it.

HTH.

I have used that program for several years....I love it. I do out all my families taxes every year and there have never been problems unless it was an error on my part. Start over and look at every step carefully. The program doesn't lie.:rolleyes1

i'm just doing our on ufile - we did it last year and got back $1200 - this year it says we're getting back $3300

think i did something wrong - have to go take a really good look at it - i hate getting all excited that we're getting a large amount back only to have them check it and cut it in half.

I've been using QuickTax for several years - and it always comes to the conclusion that I have to pay as well  but unless you inputted something wrong, then I think it is probably right.

I've used Quick Tax for years now. Did run into a problem last year though where I put in childcare and it didn't save it or something. Had to do it again. Have a look at the tax summary (button on the right hand side) and see if all your deductions (childcare, donations, rrsps etc) are listed in your summary. If so, its probably right. I was also on mat leave last year (and again this year :-) and if it wasnt for a whonkin' amount of rrsp's, we would have had to pay a fortune in. It really does make a huge difference because EI NEVER takes enough tax out.

Go to ufile.ca. You can punch in all of your info and see the results of how much you owe/are gettingback for free, and it's super easy to use. You just have to pay to either print it out and mail it, or email it if you have your 4 digit code. If you get the same results, then you know it's true and you should have your deductions adjusted by your employer. If the ufile says something different, then you know something's amiss somewhere!

I love Quick Tax. This year we're getting back almost 12k :goodvibes Mostly because of charitable donations (you get 40% of what you donated), childcare and RRSP's.

It sounds to me like you were undertaxed (is that a word?) and that is where the difference is. Otherwise be sure to check everything over. According to what you said, you should have gotten probably between 2500-3k back as a refund, so you must have underpaid that much in taxes. But I'm no expert....just a Quick Tax lover :lovestruc

I used to use QuickTax until I discovered Ufile.ca about 3 years ago and found they were cheaper. But as a bonus, I'm getting around 2K back. :cool1:

Hiya,

I think the problem is that I received 7100 in UI when I was on mat leave. Also we have a non RRSP investment that made a bit of interest that we had to declare and that pretty much wiped out my refund. Plus last year, we spent about 7000 on childcare and this year only 2000 because I was on mat leave most of the time and we only needed childcare from September until December.

So I guess it's not quicktax's fault... ;) I'm going to put in the gymnastics amounts and that might take us up to only owing about 150 bucks. Which could be worse. We also didn't max out DH's rrsp. Basically bad circumstances + bad planning but it's easier to blame the computer!!! ;)

Thanks for all the responses!

Beth

I know I just did a comparision with claiming my tuition from sept - dec and all the deductions that go with and did a regular return with just my income and tax paid, the difference only was less than 100.00??? :confused3

I thought claiming tuition paid was going to up my return but apparently not. :sad2:

I might just not claim any tuition and carry it forward and claim it all on next year's. Does anyone know if this will benefit me next year to claim it all at once?
