OT: Hair Help for Ethiopian Daughter

Anyone have any product advice for me. My adopted Ethoipian daughter's hair is changing to a coarse, dry curl now and I'm trying to find a good conditioner/moisturizer and leave-in for her.

I would recommend the Sleek line by Matrix or there is a product called Cholestral (?sp) in the ethnic hair care section at Walmart. It comes in a jar and is an orange color.

I like the "Organic Root Stimulator" Olive Oil line which I buy at Target or CVS for my son who has very thick, beautiful, tight dry curls. I particularly like that it's very lightly scented -- my son's hair absorbs a lot of product, and it's easy for the scent of products like Carol's Daughter to become overwhelming.

I also really like the organic stuff from Cornrows and Company (google them, you can order online) but right now I'm happy with the cheaper stuff.

My husband is african american and I'm white so our dd has VERY curly hair. I've found that the "kid" shampoos dry her hair out terribly so we buy regular shampoo and conditioner by Giovanni (they are natural too, which is a plus in my book). For a leave in conditioiner (we use it after every bath/shampoo) I love Giovanni's Direct stay in conditioner. The first time I didn't use enough and didn't like it but I pulled it out of the closet again and really love it!! I use about a quarter size amount (maybe a tad less) and it works great. My dd's hair when wet, is past her bottom and without leave in conditioner it's nearly inpossible to come thru.

I hit enter too fast, lol. That site has "ratings" for how curly/corse your hair is and that makes it easy to decide is a product that someone is recommending would work for you or your child.

I'd recommend you take a look at Carol's Daughter line of products, just google it. Their products can be kinda expensive but well worth it. I use the hair butter and love it.

You can also try buying some real shea butter and using it on her hair regularly as well as using regular olive oil.

I think another line is called Jane Carter, it's available in Whole Foods and I'm pretty sure she has a website, her products are good too.

As I think of more, I'll check back. Another thought is to google "black hair care" and look thru some of the sites and you may find some other ideas.

Carol's Daughter is good. Also, regular olive oil! A shampoo once every two weeks should suffice. Daily/weekly washing can dry the hair even more.

I do only shampoo once a week, unless she puts food in it (she's only 20 months old)
I've tried Carol's daughter, but I couldn't handle the smell! I think we had the hair milk.

You didn't say how old your daughter is, but you can look into these.

Jane carter's Nourish and Shine is a great moisturizer for her scalp and hair.

Everything I've mentioned, I've used before/currently. Make sure that you condition her hair each time you wash it. How often do you wash it? She may not need frequent washing. It may dry it out more.

ETA: Okay, I see she's 20 months old. I would then recommend Jane Carter's N&S, the shescentit products since they are all natural or the Curly Q products (they have a baby line now http://www.curls.biz/store/home.php?cat=144 ). Kid's Organics should be fine as well.

I have an adopted AA daughter. I have tried MANY products. By far my favorite so far is a line called Silken Child. I buy it at Sally’s beauty supply store. I use the conditioning shampoo once a week with the deep conditioner. Everyday I wet it with the hair detangler (which is like gold to me ) and then put the hair lotion in it and style. Her hair never looks dry and it is tangle free which is my main goal. I have tried all of the expensive organic stuff and this product works so much better for DD's hair. Her hair actually has perfect little ringlets after I style it. Just the way I love it!
