DS is 14 months. His new trick is trying to shove food up his nose or in his ears. For his lunch today, I put some small pieces of bread, turkey, cheese, and carrots on his high chair tray. I was sitting right next to him, but turned away for a second. I looked back and he has a piece of turkey stuck in one nostril. :crazy2: I got it out and told him "no" and he smiled at me and then tried to stick a piece of bread in his ear, with a mischievous little grin on his face.

I'm guessing he was done with his lunch, but he didn't eat very much. He's a tiny little guy who could stand to gain some weight, so I hate to cut a meal short if he might eat some more. I really hope this doesn't become a habit. He is my third, so I feel like I should know what I'm doing, but my older two never did stuff this. He is so different. He's going to give me a run for my money, I can just tell.

Any advice?

it's a phase and it will pass?

Only one of my 4 has been a nose-stuffer (although #4 is only a baby so the jury is still out on him) and it was a fairly short lived fascination which dwindled when it didn't get a huge reaction.

All 4 of mine have been madly different in personality.

My dd did that once with a dried piece of playdough. I had to use the little noses spray over and over to soften it. I got it out just before calling the doctor's office. I thought we were going to have to take her in, but it finally came out. The whole ordeal upset her. She hated the little noses, so she never did it again. Every time I used the little noses, I told her we don't put things in our nose. I think she was a bit older than your son. A few months ago, she decided to swallow a blueberry whole just to see what it was like. :confused3 Good thing I had cut up the bigger ones. Luckily she didn't like how that felt either.

DD 15m does that... We tend to eat snacks in the living room, and with a 15mo and a 3 yo, there are crumbs, sometimes large ones from pretzle rods and such... DD15m is always putting the pieces to her ear, but she really only does it for attention. I say, "Sophie, give that to momma." and she just scrunches up her little nose, laughs, and hands it over, or throws it out herself. I get nervous though that she will do it for real when I'm not in the room or something, so I check her ears several times a week, but theres never been anything in there but wax. I'm sure it will pass, everything does!

Thanks for the replies! I'm really hoping this is a quick phase. Although I guess I should be careful what I wish for...who knows what the next phase will be.

Haha, my middle child did this. She would put anything up her nose--spaghetti, beans, green peas, cheerios, toys. Ack! that kid. Then she put bacon up her nose one day and it burnt her up. That was the end of the nose-stuffing. She's 14yo now and we still tease her about it:lovestruc

Thanks for sharing your story. If this phase doesn't pass quickly, I might have to go out and get some bacon! :rotfl:

What is it about the 3rd child??? My youngest is the odd one of the bunch too. LOL My oldest was the one that shoved things up her nose though. Pea rocks at the playground........and a red hot!!!! That'll clean out the old sinuses!!! :rotfl2: She was around 2 when she did that.

You are not alone. Luckily mine doesn't do the "stuffing thing" but as a nurse I can asure you that emergency departments and ENT theatres all over the world are full of kids who put things in any orifice they can!!!!

It is a phase and it will pass when it doesn't get him any attention.
