OT: Cell phones - locked, unlocked??

Does anyone know what locked and unlocked cell phones mean. My husband is now on his 4th Razr. We've gotten all the phones through the warranty (which runs out tomorrow). This last one has a 3-month warranty. I got my phone at the same time and, so far, haven't had any problems. I was wondering, when the warranty runs out, if something goes wrong with mine, can I just get a Cingular phone on ebay and put my SIMM card in there?? I just don't know what locked/unlocked phones mean. Thanks for your help!!

Unlocked means any sim card will work with the phone., I buy all my phones unlocked.Hope this helps.

Does that mean you can buy another companies phone, say Verizon, and your SIM card will work in it?? So if I buy a Cingular phone on ebay does it have to be unlocked?? Sorry for the questions and thanks for your help!!

Once the phone is unlocked, then the sim card will work with it, for example, my cousin is with cingular and i have t mobile, my phone is unlocked , so her sim card can work with my phone...the phone must be unlocked quad band or gsm phone.
