Any fellow Canadians care to share their experience?

Thinking about going in Aug.

Overwhelmed looking on the website. Too much info!

Just want to stay for about 4 days, and one of the Hotels look like they have a waterpark, but then it says Soak City is there as well???

Any info/ advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi-

I am not from Canada, but we have a summer place in Port Clinton not far from Cedar Point. Cedar Point has it's own water park called Soak City and it is quite large. The hotel you are seeing is most likely Great Wolf Lodge and it has a small water park in the hotel. It is pretty nice but not worth the $ in my opinion. I have stayed at the Hampton and the Comfort Suites down the street for work during the winter months and both are very nice.

Cedar Point is a lot of fun. If this is an adult trip then you should also check out Put-in-Bay, it is a blast.

Thanks...

No it was not Great wolf. It was a resort on property, and has a waterpark in the hotel. It looked pretty interesting, but relly difficult to figure out.... many different packages/ rooms etc.

I wouldn't mind staying off site, but the prices online for some normally affordable hotels were VERY pricey. I mean.... a comfort inn/ days inn for $250 a night??? COME ON!
It looked less expensive to stay onsite, but again, there was so much info on the Cedar piont website, it was overwhelming.
Have you ever stayed Onsite?

We loved Cedar Point...biggest regret was not having more time there. We had only a day, but it was so fun. There are SO many coasters there that we were not able to get to them all. It was, for lack of a better word, completely crazy. They have ideas for coasters there that I didn't even know existed. Our biggest mistake was eating a big lunch - this made our tummies unsettled and we weren't able to ride the Top Thrill Dragster - this looked like so much fun - you literally just have to watch it a couple of times just to comprehend how crazy this coaster is!

Can't help you with the hotels - don't know anything about the hotels around the area as we were driving in for the day from Windsor, ON.

We hope we can get back here sometime, but we would pair it with a trip to Cleveland. Hope you have fun!!!

Thanks...

You are probably thinking of Kalahari Resort near Cedar Point. It's much better than the Great Wolf lodge

You are probably meaning Castaway Bay. It is owned by Cedar Point as well. I haven't stayed there but drove by. It looked fun. We have stayed at Great Wolf Lodge and Kalahari in Sandusky, Ohio and they were both a lot of fun. Kalahari is huge!! I have been to Cedar Point as well and I would just stay at a regular hotel because you are going to be so busy at Cedar Point that you won't have time to enjoy the water park in the hotel. We went to the water parks in the spring when Cedar Point wasn't open (GWL March and Kalahari Victoria Day weekend last year). Have fun at Cedar Point!

We went to Cedar Point with another couple last summer. I agree that many hotels around there are overpriced. We found a good deal on expedia, I can't remember the hotel but I know it had an outdoor pool and continental breakfast, for less than $100cdn. Nothing fancy, but cheaper than staying on site. I know the on-site hotels have some deals with tickets, but we still found them more expensive. Buy your tickets online ahead of time, much cheaper than at the gate.

Soak City is an ok waterpark, not very big. It's not worth spending an entire day there, IMO. We went for the afternoon and that was enough time.

The food inside the park is quite expensive, worse even than Canada's Wonderland. We brought a cooler and just went back to the car for lunch, then went outside the park for dinner. There is a picnic area near the waterpark. You can buy refillable mugs, but you can only refill them at the place you bought it from. Kind of a pain to walk all the way back, the park is one long narrow peninsula.

Oh yeah, the rides are great! Tons of rollercoasters. We had such a blast!

We went to Cedar Point Park in '07. We spent 4 nights at Kalahari and went to CP for a day. We stayed Sun to Thurs at a rate of $149 US per night for a one bedroom with a full kitchen and received a $40 gas card when we checked out.

The water park has doubled in size since we were their.

Great experience awesome park, puts Wonderland shame.

Good to know!

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, the hotel I was talking(wondering) about was Castaway Bay.

Kalahari looks very intersting.

Need to do some research before I book.

Looking for mid/end of Aug. and hoping to find a deal somewhere out there!

Thanks again.

Hello:

I have been to Cedar Point on 3 different occassions, the most recent one being last summer. We went on our Canadian August long weekend and stayed at one of the on-site hotels - Sandcastle Suites. The room was very clean and it had two double beds as well as a pull out couch and a balcony. There was a pool and a hot tub which was great for relaxing after being at the park all day. We parked at the hotel and used the free shuttle to get to the park.

The main reason we stayed onsite was because you could enter the park early if you were a hotel guest. The lines get really long here so I wanted to hit some of our key rides before the heat was unbearable and long line-ups.

I love this park and that is one of the reasons we return...the rides are fantastic and just seem to get better with each new one.

Have fun and enjoy!

we stayed in Lakeside Ohio when we visited Cedar Point and our kids still rave about that town.

If you want to hit the park hard for several days this probably wouldn't be the place. But if you are interested in a relaxing vacation with a day at Cedar Point thrown it, it's an excellent choice.

Lakeside is a gated community about 25 miles away from Cedar Point. You feel like you are stepping back in time. It's just lovely.

We stayed at the Kalahari a couple of years ago and my kids still ask to go back!

Cedar Point is a blast. My favourite part was walking thru the western part and Millenium Force!

My wife and I are old school CP veterans, and would recommend to anyone that can afford it (peak season is quite expensive) that they stay on-site. You basically have three hotel options "on point" - i.e. on the peninsula. (There is also an RV camp).

Lighthouse Point is a very cool collection of cottages and cabins, most right on the lake. It has its own pool, with a convenience store shared by the RV camp. We've stayed in the cabins on a few occassions - they have a small bedroom with a double bed, and a living room with a pull-out futon. It also a kitchen with a 'fridge and microwave. It feels secluded, and yet you're just a few minutes walk to the park.

There's also the aforementioned Sandcastle Suites - an all-suite hotel - and the Breakers. We usually stay in the Breakers' Tower, which is the newest part of the Breakers (the original parts of the Breakers are, umm, somewaht "historic"). The hotel is right on a huge beach, has a TGIFridays, several pools, game room, etc., and is again just a few hundred yards from a couple different park entrances (if you stay there, use the "Magnum" entrance).

As already was mentioned, resort guests (and this includes those staying at the off-point CP properties Castaway Bay and Breakers Express) get into the park one hour early to ride certain rides. I have heard positive things about Breakers Express as a good value.

You mentioned you are looking at an August trip - many CP diehards look at the last week of August/first week of September (before Labour Day) as perhaps the best time to visit. A lot of area kids are back in school, the park is a lot less crowded (except for Saturdays), and the prices for the CP hotels come way down. They also offer packages that include park tickets that will save you money. You can also call 1-800-BESTFUN to have a CP Getaway Guide mailed to you; it's just a shell of its former self, but it does have a bunch of money-saving coupons in it.

My opinion? If the price is right, and the dates match, stay at the Breakers on the peninsula. If not, go the Breakers Express route. You'll save money, and still get into the park before most of the crowd (and won't get caught in traffic on the causeway). And you'll need every minute there - for those who have not been to "The World's Best Amusement Park" - and it is - the place is huge, and jammed with world-class thrill rides. But I suspect most of you already knew that ...

I just wanted to post that we actually took your advice and booked the Breakers for next week.( Sept 3-5th). Thanks so much for your post.:thumbsup2
I did book 2 double beds , which I found out is in the old "Bon Air" section of the hotel.
I'm a little worried. Hopefully, I can pay for an upgrade when we get there.
It looks really yucky in the reviews on Travelocity.

We've stayed there before as well. That's the "historic" part of the Breakers - historic being the code word my wife and I use for rooms where smoking was allowed for 100 years. But you shouldn't worry too much - CP is a pretty top-notch outfit, and our room was just fine. Plus the old section is pretty cool - it looks like a resort hotel from 1905, because it IS a resort hotel from 1905. Most people forget how long Cedar Point has been around. Heck, when Knute Rockne was a lifeguard there on his time off he used the beach in front of the Breakers to invent the forward pass.

Besides, you'll be in the park most of the time, just a few feet away. Use the "Magnum" entrance (near the mini-golf) to get an extra jump on the crowds. Have a great time!
