My husband was just told he has to go on a buisness trip to San Jose, Costa Rica at the end of August. I'm hoping to join him. We'd be staying at the San Jose Mariott. Any suggestions for tourist attractions? Would I be safe going on a tour witout my husband while he had to work? Any information is appreciated...thanks.

My niece stayed there travelling with a friend a while back. There were excursions that the concierge helped them set up, I'm pretty sure they went ziplining, whitewater rafting and an ecotour type thing. I think if you stay with a reputable touring company that the hotel recommends you should be fine. However, you should probably NOT venture out by yourself on your own in the city. Costa Rica is GORGEOUS, one of my all time favorite countries to visit so far, enjoy!

Costa Rica is wonderful and really, really safe out in the rainforest, cloud forest, etc. But not in San Jose. Most of the houses are surrounded by barbed wire even in really, really nice neighborhoods. Take a tour.

Don't be scared off by the barbed wire. It comes more from the fact that the Ticos are a highly safety conscious culture than from any real danger. Friends of ours lived in an affluent suburb of San Jose for a year, and they remarked on the barbed wire on the condos in their subdivision.

Any of the tours arranged by the hotel will be safe. If you have the time, I'd highly recommend a day trip out of the city to view some of the natural beauty of the country. I'm sure there will be tours to see the Poas volcano, which is quite close to the city. Many of the other places we visited were too far for a daytrip, but the Ticos love to arrange tours for tourists, so I'm sure you won't go wrong!
