Hi all,

We are being relocated to the Marietta, GA area with my husbands job. We have been looking at homes in the Acworth area, in particularly those zoned to Ford Elem., which appears to be a great school as well as the middle and high schools. Anyone happen to live in this area and can provide ANY info at all?? We are looking in Brookstone subdivision also. thanks to all:goodvibes

I don't live near there, but I have been researching schools in my area. I ran across a cool site - greatschools.net. they have a great rating for the school you asked about.

thanks for the site...I have also been using it!

Anyone else???

I live in Acworth/Kennesaw. Where will your DH be working? I've heard of Brookstone but not sure where it is. EDIT: I just did mapquest: you are on the "right side of the road" as far as schools go. We played bb in that area. Nice houses, better schools. And lots of new stuff going in all around- strip malls, restaurants, etc.

Don't limit yourself to Acworth--Kennesaw is great!! (Okay--you have to own a gun to live here --it's a city ordnance---but it is a great city!!!) Voted by Family Circle Magazine as one of the Ten best Towns for families in America. http://www.parents.com/family-life/better-parenting/parenting-style/10-best-towns-for-families/

Here is GA's School Report Card site:

PM me if you have any other questions.

Ford Elementary is an wonderful school. Also in that same area is Frey elementary. Those are the only two schools I would let my kids go to in the Acworth area. We were looking there but ended up in Dallas Ga and my kids will be going to a new school that has not opened yet, so I am a little nervous about that, But you can not go wrong with Ford or Frey.

yes--the schools have gone down hill dramatically. Unfortunatly--they teach to the lowest level of the class and with what has been moving into the area--well. Enough said. We have friends who work for the Cobb County schools and said there isn't one in Acworth they would let their child go to. (They moved up to the Cartersville area for their kids)

I live on the other side of Atlanta, but have friends over there. All I can say is I would try the commuting situation and then decide where you want to look at houses. The commutes around here are insane!

Totally agree! Live on the same side of town that you work on. If your DH will be working in Marietta(a very nice place to live, btw) then you need to think about North Cobb, East Cobb, Cherokee, and south Bartow counties. And before you sign on the dotted line, check out the area's commute. The schools in north Cobb are generally pretty good. I'm sure that individually there are some iffy ones, but for the most part, decent schools.

That's a great area. I lived in Acworth (Paulding County) for 4 years. We had a lot of friends who lived in Brookstone. It's a great quality of life there, especially if dh doesn't have a long commute. Definetly time that before buying. In the Brookstone area, there are nice grocery stores, plenty of churches, and a very nice YMCA within 1/2 mile.

One of my good friends taught at Ford for a while and loved the school. She had to go on medical leave for a while because of a brain tumor. When she came back she worked for a charter school in Kennesaw. I've heard good things about Ford. Acworth is a lovely area too.

I really appreciate all of the replies thus far...my husband does have flex time and a 9/80 schedule with his job, so we are hoping that will help out greatly with the commute. Does anyone know the approx. commute time to Dobbins/Lockheed Martin (S. Cobb Drive)? Also we have been assigned to work with ERA Sunrise realty company - any thoughts on them? Our children are currently 3 and almost one, so it will be a little while before elementary school, so also any thoughts on well regarded preschools for the 3 yr old? (I am home with them, so not daycare - but a 3 day a week program or half days):worship: :yay:

Hi all,

We are still looking at the area...anyone with any insight into Kennesaw schools vs Acworth schools? Homes seem to be less expensive in the Bullard, McClure, Kennesaw Mtn area vs the Ford, Durham, Harrison area, any ideas why? Which area is more family oriented or are they very similar? Any recommendations on subdivisions in the $250k range?

FWIW---I would not base my housing choice based on a HS if my kids were still elem school aged. As I said in previous posts--when we moved here 10 years ago much different school situation--things change.

I am having breakfast with my future DIL this morning--she, her mother and her sister and BIL all work for Cobb County schools. I will ask her to do some checking. So it may take a few days. Off the top of my head--I think some of the Kennesaw schools may be better (we loved Lewis elementary just two years ago so a fairly recent experience!!!!!). And remember Kennesaw was listed as one of the best places to raise a family by Family Circle magazine.

All is not lost if you end up in a less than desirable school situation--there are private schools locally, a very very large home schooling base in the area and in Kennesaw there is a charter school that any Cobb County student may attend for FREE--placement is done originally by lottery but once you are in you are in ( K - 5). That "buys" you 5 years to decide about middle and high school and see what type of student your child is and their interests. (But no transportation provided by the County for the charter school).

Are you traveling to the area at all? Would be great to have a mini meet with you and do lunch or dinner! (We could also drive you around to give you more lay of the land so to speak).

Thank you for your information and for offering to show us around, but it is going to be a really quick trip - mostly spent with the realtor. I would appreciate any feedback from your family members who are teachers. So great to have peopkle who are willing to assist!:cool1:
