OT about Digital XD vs memory stick

i've seen some threads about digital cameras so thought I'd askt he experts here!

been back and forth between Olympus 740 (like the 10x optical zoom); canon s410 and sony p92. trying to stay under $350

is it true that you cannot use the xd cards (olympus) in the kodak kiosks to print out photos? that i'd then only be able to do it via online?

i'm being told 2 different things re mp and optical zoom.

if you have 10x zoom, I can bring in the object real close which is good. since i'm not planning to rpint big pics wasn't worried about mp.

but i was told that if I got a 3x optical with a 5pm, i could bring hte object in, then use the zoom (crop) feature to bring it in more. since it's 5mp it would still be very clear.

?? thoughts?

Don't know about the memory cards, but would suggest if you get anything over a 5x zoom, make sure you get image stabiliy, or have a tri-pod. Other wise you might end up with a lot of blurry photos.

that depends on how fast the lens is, and what shutter speed your shooting at...

outdoors in sunlight you should easily be able to handhold a 5x zoom..

OPTICAL zoom is the key word. I have the Olympus CZ 730. I LOVE it. Has 10x optical zoom. Only time I have problems is in lower light if I don't hold it REAL steady with the zoom all the way out. I LOVE it. I don't usually use the xd card (as mine is small) I bought several of the 128 smart media cards. I have the plug in card reader. It is very handy. I don't know about printing from the xd. I know that the smart media are very easy to take to walmart and print off of them.
I am not sure about the MP and cropping zooming etc. I haven't gotten into the editing much.

Regarding the xd memory cards... these are fairly new and only used on some Fuji and Olympus cameras. The kodak machines do not take them. I would go with the Canon if you could.

The Wal-Mart nearest to us has a new Kodak machine that does take the xD picture card. However, I wouldn't let the use or non-use of the xD picture card decide your choice of cameras. I purchased a very reasonably priced xD picture card reader that attaches to my computer via USB cable. The photos are quickly downloaded and I burn the ones I want printed to a CD-ROM and take that to the photofinisher.

I have a Fuji, that uses the XD cards. Many of the machines do not take them, but I have never found it to be a problem. I have a card reader for it, that transfers them to my hard drive, then I edit if necessary and put them on CD rom and take them into be printed. I figure I'd want to back them up to CD anyway. I like them because they are so small, so you can carry several with you in a small camera bag.

I have an Olympus C750 and really like it, love the zoom. It is true that with a higher mp you can get more out of the digital zoom. I believe there are ratings that show what you can do based on the Optical / MP ranges.

I haven't had any problems with the xd card but have only used it once in a kiosk.

the 740 only takes the xd, can't do the smart media.

according to the kodak website the kiosks take the xd card

the 740 is a bit bulkier then I'd like, hence the question re lower optical zoom, higher mp to compensate!

such decisions!!

i knew there were some camera experts on the dvc board, but the thread got moved!!
