Osama, terrorist attacks and poss danger for aussies travelling to US - let's discuss

Actually after typing that post I read a travelzoo email which has return flights from Gold Coast to Tokyo for about $400. Now DH and I are considering going for just a week... :rolleyes1:rotfl:

Spend the money you save on Radiation suits :rolleyes1 and don't eat the fish

I'm so UNBELIEVABLY thankful I went to Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea when I did. The Yen was in the gutter (having booked with it at parity) but we were safe and enjoyed it.

We flew to LA the day after the planes starting flying again post 9/11. In fact it was so soon afterwards they discussed at great lengths whether to let the child friendly scissors in my 3 yo daughter's art box on the plane - but then served dinner with metal knives. What the!

We never felt safer. Security was everywhere. Disneyland was really quiet and Knotts Berry Farm (where we stayed) was so empty we stayed on the log ride around 10 times because there was no one waiting. The shuttle to Disney from the hotel was their stretch limo since we were the only passengers most days and it was cheaper for them to run than the bus. We were upgraded to a suite (because the hotel was empty) and upgraded to business class from LAX to Sydney - including a 3 year old.

The hardest part was enjoying ourselves when others went about their days in fear.

Wow, with all of those bonuses I'm sure I'd manage!

We fly to New York in just under two weeks and will then be flying to WDW a few days later and then back to NY for another week.
When I heard the news about OBL my first thought was 'Oh great - just our luck' but in all honesty I don't care. When your number is up it is up I think. If it WAS to happen at least we would have been enjoying ourselves and having a great holiday. A life lived in fear is a life half lived.
Not to be Mr Doom N Gloom, but nowhere is safe - I am sure there are extremists living in Australia also.
Can only live one day at a time and make the most of every minute.

I am determined not to let the terrorists win. I will not live my life in fear. I know this sounds so cliched. It is also difficult when you are parents with young children. Having said this, I would not take known risks, eg going into a war zone. We face risks everyday, and as many have said, no place in the world is completely immune to terrorism. As much as I hate bringing religion into this, I do have faith and trust in God, whatever happens to me happens for a reason. When it is time to go, it is time to go!

Princess, you are walking disaster! Glad you are still with us...
