Ormond Beach or other family friendly recommendation

We will be traveling to DW soon with friends whose children have never seen the ocean. On our way home, we thought about stopping over and spending a few hours at a beach along I-95 North in Florida. A few years ago, someone had recommended Ormond Beach as a nice, clean, family friendly beach. Can anyone tell me if this is still the case or recommend an alternative? A few years ago, we went to Daytona and really were not very impressed. Hotels along the beach were run down, many with boarded up windows. The restrooms were nasty, so prefer not to go there.
