anybody ever flown into this airport? how far is it to the port? would it be worth it to fly into sanford instead of mco if i could a way cheaper flight? any nearby hotels? does disney transfers apply to there

We were supposed to go on DCL Sept 4-Sept 11 couldn't b/c of hurricane  and fly into Sanford b/c we got a super cheap flight. It's a smaller airport and is about 1 1/2 hrs away from the port compared to about an 1 hr from MCO to the port. I don't know about the transfers but we were going to get a one way rental from Budget for about $27 (say u have a Sam's Club card for the discount) and drop it off at the Budget in Cape Canaveral and they have a courtesy drop off to the port. It's a lot cheaper and flexible at least for us. We did this last year on our 3nt Disney cruise and it worked out great and it's a really easy drive to the Port.

I think there are quite a few hotels near the Port.

Good Luck and you will have a blast!

I flown into it a number of times. It's a nice little airport about 45 minutes from DisneyWorld.

There are no Disney transfers from there; only Mears. Also if you are having a towncar pick you up it is a lot more expensive then from Orlando Airport.

That said, if you can get a good price on a flight into Sanford, and you plan on renting a car, I'd do it.

We flew into Sanford airport three years ago. They do not have transfers to WDW, so I'm sure they do not have transfers to Port Canaveral. It cost my husband and myself about $90 each way for a taxi to WDW. I was very upset because they told me at my local Disney Store that you could catch a bus from Sanford Airport to WDW. It took us about 45 minutes to get from the airport to WDW, and it is northeast of Orlando. I would guess that it would take about 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes to get from Sanford Airport to Port Canaveral.

It was a nice, quiet little airport.

Not too many airlines fly into this airport. A lot of charters and airlines from Europe do however. Don't think there are many hotels at the airport. Some nice ones in Lake Mary which would be a 15 minute or so ride away (near I-4). Disney transfers from there to the port don't exist. There are many car rental agencies at that airport so car rentals are easy. Never looked into a one way from there to the port. Many car/limo services so go up there. You can see the prices on their web sites so that is an option. Driving from there to the port is easy. Just get on 417 (the Greeneway) which is a toll road, to Hwy 528 (Beeline, another toll road) to the port. It would probably take about a hour and a half at the most.

Yes -- it's a very nice airport and some airlines fly into it at very discounted rates.

It's probably an hour to the port by car. If you can get a cheap flight and then rent a car, I think it's a good option.

The Lake May Marriott is about 15 minutes away, and is a very nice hotel. IMO, it would also be convenient for someone flying in because there is a big mall (Seminole Town Centre) and a Walmart nearby, so you could pick up things there and not have to pack them in your luugage when you fly in.

We used Sanford last year when we took our cruise. I would highly recommend it. We flew on Southeast Air and got great rates. We rented a car from National and there were no lines at the counter. Getting our luggage took a lot less time than it did at MCO. There is also a gas station right near the airport (unlike MCO) so you can refuel and avoid being charge $5 per gallon!

Thanks for all this great info. We have a change in plans and have to get my DH and oldest DS down to Orlando (myself and my youngest DS will be driving down before that) for as cheap as possible. I didn't realize there was another so this is great!

Has anyone ever used Orbitz.com? I found some great rates there, but have never used it myself.

Thank you for any info anyone can give me.

We flew into Sanford in August. I would reccomend going through that airport. Much less congested.

The limo company we used said it is becoming more popular.

I have used Orbitz on a number of occasions and have found they offer very competitive fares. The others I use frequently are Travelocity and Expedia - I would recommend you search each to see what your options are.

Thanks to all for the helpful info about Sanford - I will definitely be using it for my family's Feb '05 trip - the departure airport in NH is much closer to home for us than Boston, the parking at NH airport is free, the flight is direct...what more could you ask? We're renting a car once we get to FL, so transportation from the airport isn't an issue.

A bit further away from everything apparently, but I'll trade that for smaller/quieter/simpler airport experience.
