Ordering your meal

Forgive my ignorance, but when you order your meal in the MDR do you order starters, mains and dessert all at the same time or as the meal progresses?

Starter and the main only.

Normally the server will take your order for your starter, any salad and the main entree first.
The assistant server takes your drink orders.
Then when your entree is complete then you order dessert.
And the assistant server orders coffee tea etc.

We ordered starters (includiding soup) and main together. Deserts was ordered after the main course, but if you wish to order otherwise discuss with your waiter what will suit you. Only thing is that there is a timeframe in which diner must be completed, certainly in the main dining as second seating must be prepared. Late diner will offer you more time to eat and order ar your own pace.

I have never found being rushed on Main at all in 12 DCL cruises, we always eat at our own pace. There is two hours fifteen minutes to eat a meal on main. If you did that on late its 10.30pm. (Missed Pirate show)

Drinks first. Then Appetizers, Soup / Salad and Entrees (all together). When you are finished with all that they bring out the dessert menu.

You definitely want to get your "meal" in quickly. More than once, after our whatever would come out and it was awesome, we would ask for a second serving and soon be told, I'm sorry, we do not have any more of that. So if something looked good, we asked our server and often we would order 2 or 3 up front...if it was awful, it was wasted, but DCL tied our hands.

We'd probably do just the opposite. If it was really good, and IF the servers appeared to have the time (that's important) for a special request, we would order a second. If they were out, that meant others got to enjoy the dish as well! I would hate to order a popular dish, decide we didn't like it, and let it be wasted. Missing out on seconds isn't DCL "tying our hands" but life happening.

But...we are pretty forgiving eaters, the MDRs are great fun, and we will happily eat ANYTHING we've ever seen on their menus. We have never had anything that was awful

We've only done one cruise so far, but because we had our own table we were able to eat at our own pace, which is relatively quickly. We usually skipped either the starter or salad/soup course, so after the first or second night our server took our orders for any starter, soup or salad as well as our entree. They just adapted their serving style to our eating habits, which was wonderful! The dessert menu would appear after the entree plates had been cleared.

They continue to make food until the orders stop coming in...then they make a few extras and call it good. They told us this on the kitchen tour on the WBPC, so we definitely were not taking the opportunity away from others to enjoy the dish.

I believe the exception is the night of the animation show in Animator's Pallet (not on the Wonder). Then they have you order everything so that they can time everything to the show and be out of the dining room at that point.

The dessert menu is usually a separate menu. You order apps, dinner, and drinks first. The server usually makes recommendations first. They get to know what you like. For example tuna tartar is my favorite and my server surprised me with an extra serving
