Ordering from the kids menu?

Hi, just wondering if anyone has had luck with this. It sounds kind of crazy, but at some of the more "upscale" restaurants, the food doesn't really appeal to me. I now my husband would love it, but honestly I found items I would like to eat on the kids menu.
Do the restuarants allow you to order from the kids' menu even if you aren't a kid?
Thanks for any thoughts :)

DH orders from the kids menu all the time - usually just an appetizer, but we've had no problems at all. Often they can give you an adult sized portion at an adult sized price.

I've done it at many counter services, but not at a TS.

If I see something that I like on the kids menu, I ask if they have it on the adult menu and normally they will bring me my request with an extra 'adult' veggie or something. I get charged as an adult plate, but if it is really what I would rather eat, I don't care.

I'm with ya! I've been perusing menus looking to fill that last TS credit and so many of the entrees have so much schtuff added to them! Give me some meat and potatoes and a veggie, I don't need it in a la-di-da sauce with wine reduction and a bunch of things I've never even heard of.

DH ordered a kids chicken breast at Akershus in 2005 so they doubled the size. When I started in on the sour slop they called chicken salad, I was so jealous of his plain chicken, potatoes, and corn.

I am sure DD10 will be getting some kids meals when she can. She is not a "chicken nuggets & hot dogs only" kid and may even eat the most different things than any of us but still has her limits!

Honestly it seems so many restaurants everywhere think they need to go overboard with the seasonings, peppers, and sauces.

Thanks for the thoughts ! I agree.... you can charge me for the adult plate, but I would like to fill my self up on something I will enjoy. Even if it is just mac and cheese :)

Also, feel free to ask for a dish without the sauce or seasoning or even on the side. I like my steak pretty plain, just seasoned with salt and pepper and have never had a problem getting that at WDW. As for sides, you can swap those too - don't like the cream cheese mashed potatos that come with your entree and would rather have the roasted potatos from the chicken entree, they can easily accomodate that. I generally look at the menu as showing me what they have in the kitchen and I'll combine them to make my meal - for example at Yachtmans I got entree A, potato from entree B, and veggie from entree C - the waiter was more than happy to make sure I got food that I was actually going to eat and enjoy. He did chuckle a bit when DH ordered the kids chicken noodle soup as his appetizer though.

Yes, you can. My sister is a very picky eater so she ate mostly mac & cheese from the kids menus at most of the restaurants we ate at. Sometimes we were charged the kids price and sometimes the adult price. She was happy with what she got to eat and we got to eat at the restaurants we wanted to and didn't have to eat all counter service to please her taste.

I have gotten the kids selection a couple of times, but that was back when there were choices. Now the menus are almost identical at each TS meal. OP, please look at the kids menus just to make sure that is what you want. There are only so many cheese pizzas one person can eat. (which my granddaughter ate for 8 days in a row). Keep in mind you could also order a la carte items too. As for too many spices, please remember you can make changes to the selection at most locations. At LeCellier, my 14 yo grandson would get the maple BBQ filet (before it was taken off the menu). He got the sauce on the side (which he didn't use) and got french fries instead of the mashed potatoes. Just look at the other selections available and ask about switching. I find most places are accommodating.

If you ask for a different side or some sort of change to the menu item the way it is written, do you pay extra for that?

That's why they keep simplifying the menus. Because people don't want to break out of their shells! Take a risk, try something new! If you're afraid of a sauce, get it on the side. That's one of the reason's I don't eat at Disney anymore, the menus are so dumbed down. I can get that kind of food at restaurants off property for much less. I don't think people realize that. Why pay $10 for chicken fingers at Disney when you can get it for $5 off grounds. Disney really has cornered the market.

Typically they won't mind you ordering off of the kids menu, but most places will want to charge you an adult price. Now a counter service is a different story, all you would have to say there is your kid is at the table with grandma and I'm ordering for them.

We've never had a price change when switching sides, but I'm not sure we would notice either since we aren't paying OOP. I really can't imagine that one veggie or starch is that much more expensive than another - the real cost is from the entree meat.

My df ordered from the kids menu and was given an "adult portion" (adult price). My elderly Mom has ordered from the kid's menu because she likes things plain and simple. Most of the time, maybe because she's quite elderly, they have charged for a kid's meal (of course we'd pay for an adult size meal, if that was the case).
Also, like another post mentioned, you can always ask for something without sauce or topping and with a "plain" side. If they have plain potato or veggies I think they would do that. It never hurts to ask.
:)
