Options for a few extra points?

Okay, so we are trying to figure out if we can book a stay or not. We are still learning all of the borrowing/banking rules. I also know there is some availability of accessing extra points if you need them, but not really sure exactly how that works (as we haven't needed that option until, possibly, now).

Here's our stats:

UY: June
Banked 2012 points: 16
Total 2013 points: 160
Total points needed for May 2013 trip: 182

Our 2013 points don't drop in until June. If we borrow all 160, plus our 16 banked, we are short 6 points. I don't think we can borrow into 2014, can we?Is there another option that we are not considering? Essentially, if we take our trip in May, where can we get the extra 6 points? Or are we just out of luck and have to do one night with cash?

Thanks! We appreciate the input/guidance.

If there is availability to book a room for May 2013, you can purchase 6 one-time-use points from MS for $15 per point. You can purchase a max of 24 one-time-use vacation points once per use year and this can be done at 7 months or less from the arrival date.

- Buying the points from DVC . up to 24 1- time use as long as you buy into your 7 month window ,which you are well into.

-cost is $15.PP . Just call MS and they'll arrange it.

DVC offers the option to purchase up to 24 points at $15/pt. Those extra points can only be purchased within the 7 month booking period. That may be your most economical option since you only need six points. You purchase them at the time you are on the phone with MS. There is not a way to do this with online booking.

This is exactly the type of information I was looking for! Thank you! I knew I had read about various options for buying a small quantity of points, but did not know the details. I appreciate your assistance. Thank you!

Thank you both, as well. Much appreciated!

If your 2012 points are already banked into 2013, you cannot borrow them back into 2012. So you'll have to buy 22 one-time use points, which is still within the allowed limit.

Good catch! You are correct. The May 2013 trip falls in the OP's June 2012 UY.

Also, traveling so near the end of the UY can put your points in danger in case you need to cancel. If you cancel, the borrowed points would expire at the end of May 2013, so giving little to no time to use or rent the points.
If you can, it would be safer to delay the trip until June.

I appreciate this thought and yes, we understand that risk with a May trip. However, it would be for my birthday and once we set it, we won't cancel unless something massive (life-wise) happens. We generally buy trip insurance, as well. Thank you for this thought, though. It's an important one to make sure we were aware of, indeed.

Excellent point! Thank you for catching that! More importantly, you made me realize something else as well.

Here's another question for everyone:

Again, for easy reference, our stats:

UY: June
Banked 2012 points: 16
Total 2013 points: 160
Total points needed for May 2013 trip: 182

So... we borrow 160 points from 2013's UY, plus buy 22 points at $15/point. Our trip for May 2013 is "paid."

But... we have those 16 banked points. We will have just used all of our 2013 points. If I have my rules right, points can only be moved once, right? So those 16 points will be stranded in the island of UY 2013 all by their lonesome, with nothing to do, right? Can I do anything at all with them at that point? Or am I confusing myself? :rotfl2:

Thanks, again,

Since they are banked already, you can't transfer them to another member. Best thing to do is rent them or get a one night studio reservation and rent that. And you cannot unbank them.

Go again next year at the end of the US, like Memorial Day, use the banked points for the first night and the following year's points for the next nights.

Those banked points would be valid for any trip in your 2013 UY--June 1st, 2013 until May 31, 2014. So if you want to travel during that time, you could borrow your 2014 UY points to put with them.
