We were thinking of trying Coral Reef on our next trip.
How would that be for our group: DS2, DD5, DS9 and six adults(on the dining plan)?
Any input on food, atmospehere-anything! would be greatly appreciated! :goodvibes

My honest opinion - out of the 9 or 10 sit down meals we did, Coral Reef was definitely my least favourite and I thought it would be a highlight. Yes, the fish are beautiful and very colourful and you can see divers occasionally and that's kinda cool but I dunno, it's good for a minute and then I'm not sure the kids even looked over towards the fish anymore. It's very, very dark in there and if you're not seated right alongside the aquarium glass panels, it's kinda awkward - it's tiered seating so you can see from anywhere in theory but not in detail - we were on the second tier - one above the glass panels I think. When we finished eating we did go closer to try to get a look at the fish properly but of course people were trying to eat their lunch and it was awkward hovering over them. lol!! Meal choices were limited although I give it a bit thumbs up for the kids dessert 'make your own sundae', but honestly I wouldn't go back. In short, too dark, not very friendly and only cool if you're right next to the glass panels.

Maybe think about going for lunch. When our kids were small we'd do that and I'd get the Lobster soup as a meal. Delicious!! People are very divided as to the food quality here...but all agree it can't be beat for atmosphere...which is why I say lunch. The menu is pretty much the same, but the soup or salad, can make a nice lunch. That said, we're going for dinner for the first time in Feb. 'cause it's just been reduced from a signature dining to a TS on the dining plan.

a 6, 4, & 3 year old so I was concerned about them. It was nice and loud in the restaurant and you could see the aquarium from any table. Service was excellent and so was the food. A great experience. We were also on the dining plan with my folks who were not. We were able to get 5 appetizers and also 5 desserts to share among adults. The meal would have cost $150 for my family. I'm not sure how much it was for my folks. That's a great deal for the dining plan!

We did this with the free dining in October and I liked it so much I am going back for the trip that starts next week.

The food was very good. The service wasn't great. The atmosphere was so awesome. We waited a little extra and got a table right on the aquarium and it was SO worth it. My DD didn't need her crayons and placemat to keep her happy she watched the fish. While we where there several divers were in the aquarium for the Diving Experience and they would come up to the table every now and then and wave and the instructor would do some tricks. We all enjoyed it so much.

It was like we had a show going on while we ate dinner!

I have heard so many mixede reviews about CR but now that it has been reduced to 1 TS I think Im going to give it a try

CR is definitely one of those love or hate type restaurants. There are few middle grounders when it comes to CR (DebIreland a noted exception :earsboy: ). Perhaps it's the expectations folks have when going there, or perhaps CR just isn't a consistently great experience, having too many peaks and valleys as it were. However, our experience there last year was superb. We (DW, DD5, me)did dinner with an ADR of 6 p.m. We arrived early and asked for table by the tank. We waited an extra 20 minutes, but it was worth it. Asking for a table like that for a larger party may not be possible. . .I just don't know.

The food was delicious. I've lived near the Gulf Coast, in Maryland, and in Alaska, and good fish and seafood dishes were easy to come by in all of those areas. The blackened catfish I had was topnotch, very comparable to dishes I've had in my travels. My wife's dish (grouper, I think) was also tasty. Some complain about the size of portions vs. cost, but they are quite in line with upscale restaurants in large metropolitan areas. We didn't find the portions small at all, especially since we had an appetizer, soup or salad, and like our parents taught us years before, we ate our veggies! We were plenty full.

The service was exemplary that night, though I know that's one area that can be a real coin toss. Our server was prompt, friendly, and helpful. When our daughter was having trouble deciding which of two sauces to have with her pasta (marinara or alfredo), the server wound up bringing out both on the side so she could choose. We didn't ask her to do so--that is good service, especially when done so in such a friendly manner. Our server checked with us frequently, would chat with us momentarily to see how things were going or to talk to our daughter, and our water glasses were always full.

Finally, the desserts were excellent! The chocolate wave is one of the best desserts I've tasted on property. It's a chocoholic's dream dish. And our daughter loved her build-your-own sundae--they bring all the fixings to the table and let the child do the rest.

Naturally, the tank was a big hit, moreso with my wife than daughter, I think. I don't know how nice of an experience it would be to be farther away from the tank, but it was exceptional being up close and personal like we were. For us, CR was a wonderful experience. We'll go back at some point after we've eaten our way around all of WDW. For now, we give it :fish: :fish: :fish: :fish: out of five. :paw:

Do you think the menu will change now that it is 1 TS credit?

We had dinner at the CR, my daughter and I. The aquarium is beautiful and finding all the fish to check off kept her busy & interested.

The food was good too, I had shrimp with pasta & she had kids spaghetti. For dessert we had peanut butter playdoh & make your own sundae.

Service was good and I would definately go again. :)

I have eaten there twice and had a great experience both times. I plan on making it a regular restaurant stop.

We really enjoy CR. But we have changed a little...our first time eating there was for dinner...every trip since has been for lunch. The menus are similar and can still get the appetizers that DH enjoys..but the cost is better!!

My bf and I ate lunch there in Sept. and really enjoyed it. We had a small table right next to the aquarium so we had a fantastic view. Our server was very friendly and prompt. When I told him I was a vegetarian, he explained the different menu options that were available to me and offered to bring out the chef if I wanted to eat something different. Turns out his wife is a vegetarian as well so we chatted a bit about the subject. I did go with the vegetarian option on the menu - tofu with risotto and spinach - and it was the second best TS meal I had in WDW, the first being CG. My bf had the lunch special for $20 and enjoyed it. While we were on the dining plan, we didn't want to spend 2 TS credits, so I used reward points to pay for the meal. For two, I believe it came out to around $65 w/tip which isn't too bad for a nice meal.
I look forward to eating there again!

Kat

Our family was there last April and it was our one disappointment at Disney World (of course by no means dampened our trip overall!) We were there for Dinner, could not get by the aquarium so the children were restless and the food was not all that impressive. Portions are extremely small. We will not dine there again. For our family of four, if I recall, our bill was around 160.00 and we went back to the Poly and ordered a pizza.

If anyone has gone there since it has switched back to 1TS please post reviews and any changes good or bad. :hyper2:

We really enjoyed the Coral Reef.

It is my wife favorite resturant.

We ate there before and didn't like it. We're not picky eaters, but Coral Reef just was not for us. We had a great table, but didn't care for the food very much.

I ate at Coral Reef in October and it was THE BEST meal I had that trip. And I don't eat seafood. Had the Caesar Salad (again the best of my trip) and the NY Sirloin. Very good, cooked as ordered. Chocolate wave for dessert was amazing!! Can't wait to go back again in June!!!

You can check out my photos of my meal here:

Cheers!

Here's my review...

Dinner @ Epcot Coral Reef. This was the best bang for our dining plan as it now is 1 TS instead of 2. Our dinner [2A, 3C] would have been $150! We split our 5 appetizers and desserts with my folks [were not on plan], kids just had their meals which they enjoyed. The kids were relatively entertained by the aquarium and there’s not a bad seat in the place. Service was also excellent here. The downside was the walk to see the Illuminations afterwards…the CSM when I booked this dinner was convinced Illuminations was 9:30 so my 7:30 ressie would be fine, well, of course Illuminations was 9:00 pm. We missed the first 5 minutes and obviously didn’t have the greatest view, but they were nice. The food and the service excellent.
