We are going to Disney in April for the first time. I have reservations for us at the Spirit of Aloha Luau and wanted everyone's opinion on it. My kids are: DS 10, DS 9, DS 6, and DD 19 months. My older two sons are in this "I'm too old for it...." stage, so I opted out of the Hoop De Doo. What do you think?

We have done the Spirit of Aloha Luau several times and always enjoyed ourselves. We thought the food and show were very good. I think all your kids will enjoy the show.

The initial story is a little hokey, but once the tradional dancing starts, it's fun. And your boys will love the fire dancer.

Food is totally doable! Have fun.

I'd call the food edible or adequate. Doable is a good way of putting it.

It's a fun evening even though the food isn't great and the show isn't great. If you're on a budget it might not be worth the $$$ otherwise go for it.

The old version was much better than the current one. We probably will not go back. There are several threads on this show and the large majority seem to feel the same way. The HDDR on the other hand wins hands down with us and the threads on this board that compare the two..smjj

We are going to Spirit Aloha on our last night and then watch Wishes from the beach. The reviews for Hoop are far better, but I want to try it once and decide for myself. I think our girls will like the show and since we have never seen Hoop, we won't be able to compare the two.

I can't compare to the HDDR, since I have never been.
DH, DS 5 & 10mos, and I really enjoyed the luau show. The food was another story, it is eatable but I wouldn't go there for the food! For the children they do offer a kids meal pack-mac & cheese, hotdog and chicken tenders.
They also have a part in the show where they let the kids get up and learn to hula on stage! We got some great pics of that and the fire dance was awesome in our opinion.
I think you will all enjoy it! :thumbsup2

one of the things you start to notice on these kinds of boards are people who remember something the old way and say the new way doesnt live up to the old way. the luau is definately one of them. my family went to the luau in october and thought it was a great show. the food was actually very good. the service wasnt the best, but better than at the hddr. at the hddr, i couldnt get a beer refilled for the life of me. anyway, we enjoyed it and we had been to the hddr the year before.

The first time I went to the luau, mid 90s, you could get unlimited mi tis (spelling?) with your meal. The second time I went that choice was gone.

I'm much more of a fan of the Luau than the Hoop-De-Doo. The first part of the show isn't that great, but the second part makes up for that. The food isn't spectacular, but I don't have any complaints either. A couple of years ago I had trouble getting beers, but since then I just ask for two at a time. The servers are very busy and will accommodate such a request as it saves them time. The atmosphere is fun and I encourage people to try it once and form their own opinion.

Thanks for all of the wonderful responses. Thanks for the advice about the drinks, too. We are on the dining plan, so we don't have to worry about the money aspect of it. I think I'll leave my reservation as it is and try out the luau. My boys are excited about seeing the fire dancers!

We did this last year. The show was absolutely wonderful. The food was "OK". If you are on the dining plan then go for it. I would not pay full price to do this one again. We had to stop and get dd some food when we left. There was not much she would eat. Have Fun.
