Has anybody ever had this done. I have to in the next 4-6 weeks have my large toe nail, nail plate and nail bed removed due to repeated infections and the nail is now growing downwards through the toe (not an ingrown nail) and causing pressure on the bone in the toe resulting in pain in foot. I have to have the major dressing removed 5 days later by the hospital and then redress it myself for up to 12 weeks. I have informed work that i will be off for a least 2 weeks maybe more, i work on my feet so they have offered me a sitting job when i feel ready to go back.

Anybody ever had this done or know anything more. thanks alison

..oh, dear, Alison! That sounds terrible! ... but I guess better in the short-medium term than the pain/infections? Sorry, can't advise on the condition/treatment, just wanted to express sympathy! Best wishes for the procedure. Keep smiling:D Mike

A friend of mine had this done about 6 months ago.

She was off work for about 2 weeks and then took it very easy when she got back. The worst thing for her was not being able to drive (the hospital said no driving as it would be dangerous) and she had to wear shoes that did not touch her toe at all (eg flip flops). It took at least 3 months before she could bear to have anything other than the dressing touch her toe, but now she said it feels great!

OOO....Ouch Alison! Ditto everything Mike said - good luck with the op and wishing you a speedy and permanent recovery.

Alison,

This sounds so painful. Hope the op goes smoothly and you have a speedy recovery.

I can comment from both perspectives, as ive had my nail removed and i work in an operating theatre and have seen many zadek procedures as its known in the trade.
Firstly let me say it throbs like made at first so make sure that if your having it in day surgery you demand to have stonger TTAs than just paracetamol and ibruprofen, because it hurts for a good 48 hours.
Having said this i know its probably to late to change but i have done twice once by a surgeon and once by a chiropodist and i would thoroughly recomend the chiropodist approach as that did not hurt afterwards even though they performed the same procedure, but the diference is they (sorry to sound gruesome) at this point, lift the skin up in way that means that they can get to the nail bed without using an incision, and without the incision there was no throbbing pain just a slight dull ache, so even though i work with surgeon everyday i must say i would go for a chirpodist as they are much more humane.
It took me about two tweeks to walk on it properly again

OUCH! firstly.
Don't know nothing about it at all,but just wanted to send my sympathys :( sounds painful!!

Thanks all, must admit i am not looking forward to having it done but know the constant pain etc will be gone for good.

I too have been told no driving.

The senior podiatist (sp) will be doing it as a day case under local anaesetic, he has treated me all the way through this so feel comforatable with him.

Work have been very good as well.

thanks again alison.

:( Ouch - I wish you the best of luck with the op, it sounds pretty straightforward:eek:

Being able to not walk and drive is a real bummer - I broke my toe 2.5 weeks ago, leaving this afternoon for best part of three weeks in Florida and no long walking and no driving:( Great holiday, hey:(

Hope your recovery is speedy - just don't overdo it, and do as you're told:D
